Call of Duty 5 Details - Co-op Support

Computer and Video Games has details from OXM on the next Call of Duty game, which will not be called Call of Duty 5, but rather Call of Duty: World at War, a return to the World War II setting in the works at Treyarch Studios. Word is the game will center around the Pacific theatre, though Russia's advance on Berlin will also be depicted. There's also word that the military shooter sequel's use of the engine from CoD4 creates a grittier and scarier environment than previous CoD games, and a further blurb on Videogaming247 mentions target platforms as PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii (the version for the latter platform is being developed separately), and the hopeful news from both articles is the game will include cooperative multiplayer support. No release date is projected at this point. Thanks Voodoo Extreme.

WWI and WWII are barely different. You've still pigeonholed yourself.

As far as infantry, at least. Lord knows I love WWI flight sims, with WWII being entertaining as well. But for infantry? WWI and WWII FPS games are very similar and very dull.

People can keep whining about all these space marine alien invasion games, but at least they give you room for creativity.

you should try the game 'mount n blade'
Indeed, have owned it since version 0.711. Damn good stuff, and one of the few games (independent no less!) that make me say to developers leaving PC for console only development, "seeya, don't let the door hit you in the ass."

You could also have air combat in a WWI game, as well as a bit of tank and naval warfare.

Yeah, you could. You could also shoot yourself through the kneecaps to see if it really hurts and impedes movement.

Dude, seriously. WWI ain't much fun because everything is so slow and lacking punch. Even WWII feels painfully dated IMHO when you have one of those n00b weapons like an M1 or Lee Enfield and other slow shooting/reloading crap like that. There's so much they could do with modern settings (imaginative or real CT force, DEA, mercenary squads, any army in the world etc). WWI and II is lame by comparison.

I can only remember playing 2 WWII games: Medal of Honor and Call of Duty.

Both were nearly identical. In fact, I can't remember which was which. The best I can do is recall that one ripped off every recent WWII movie, right down to scraping with Enemy at the Gate.

By the time I finished the second one I was really, really bored. Neither was particularly good, both relied too much on the fact that you could quick-load (remember that one sniper sequence?), and the weapons get very boring very quickly as there's no real tactical difference: just find whatever you have the most ammo for and shoot.

Haven't played a WWII FPS since. I do not feel as if I've missed out on a single damned thing.

Heh, ya I'm sure that after you had to scrape the bottom of the barrel to get that list that it goes on and on and on.
That list was nowhere near the bottom of the barrel...

CoD4 sells better than any of the other titles, and because of that, people in charge figure that going BACK to the WW2 settings is the smartest thing to do?

You didn't specify that they all had to be good WW2 shooters. Regardless, that sample (yes, there are more) of WW2 shooters confirms that WW2 is thoroughly milked and should never be touched again.

Here's a fairly thorough list of WW2 games: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_World_War_II_video_games

I just want to see more good Vietnam war games.

Seems one hasn't been done since the first Vietcong, and I can't go back to that because of the inaccurate mouse movement.

Crytek engine just screams to be used for a great game set in the Vietnam War. Moonlit jungle in Crysis was amazing!

A "dozen or so" games? I've personally played at least 40 WW2 games. There's at least two hundred WW2 games out by now, and with decent budgets at that. If we count every single WW2 game in existence, we're probably in the 1,000-3,000 area.

Woah, to me the "50 million people died" statistic is a reason NOT to be "attracted" to WW2 as an entertainment setting.

These games are great fun, but they seem to have a 6th grader's level of understanding of WW2. As such, they don't really treat the topic with the respect and intelligence it deserves. Most of these games are WORSE than Michael Bay's treatment of Pearl Harbor, and that's saying a lot.

There was more to WWI than the trench fighting. The opening months of the war predated the trenches, and there was combat in Africa with no trenches.
Even better. More material for a kick ass game.

The largest most extensive war in the entire history of mankind and you think a dozen or so games and its tapped?
It's true that developers could keep producing unique experiences based upon WWII indefinitely but the reality is that they don't. We end up with a whole host of games with the same setting, very similar gameplay and forgettable plots. Simply moving it to Vietnam isn't going to help but it would show that the developer is at least open to different ideas, something currently lacking. At the end of the day I've played dozens of WWII shooters and I'm bored of them... I want something different. Judging by the response here many other people agree.
