Age of Conan DX10 Delay

Voodoo Extreme notes that a Funcom press release about this week's launch of Age of Conan contains a less-than-prominent note that the DirectX 10 edition of the MMORPG will be delayed, which is apparently great news for DirectX 10 fans according to the spin:

As Microsoft’s DirectX 10 is undoubtedly the future of PC gaming, Funcom has decided to ship only the DirectX 9 version at launch, giving the team more time to focus on building a DirectX 10 version worthy of Microsoft’s great vision for the future of PC gaming. This postponement will let Funcom include even more features in the DirectX 10 version of Age of Conan than originally planned.

The DirectX 10 version will be premiered at the German Games Convention in Leipzig, Germany, August 20 – 24, 2008. A special preview showing off the advanced graphics made possible by DirectX 10 technology will be unveiled this summer at nVidia’s NVISION event in San Jose, California, August 25 – 27, 2008.

You can get BR burners for the PC for under $200 $300, last I checked...

Media is the killer, $15 a pop, and that's on the low end...

Yep... 300 for the drive and $15 per disk... Sounds like my first CD burner and CDR media...

I already own 4 internal hard drives and 2 external hard drives of various sizes. Most of the external drives suck speed wise BTW. Luckily I have an external sata connection that I can use an sata drive enclosure with. I'll probably pick up yet another drive/enclosure at some point.

I'd prefer to have something more portable filed away. Then I don't need to worry about the HD going bad or getting fried by a lightning strike. An acronis image of your main drive stuck on a BR disk would be a nice fallback when everything else fails.

Yeah, definitely getting close to something worth buying. newegg.com had one for $299.

I don't see the point of investing in this tech when HDD's are getting so ridiculously cheap. For $200 you can get an external Terabyte. (Fry's on sale today)

Or if you want 2 so that you don't have to worry about that one drive going down you can buy an external 320mb for $129.99. (Fry's on sale today)

And they read/write a lot faster, can be reused, and can plug into anything with a USB port. It makes no sense to me why anyone would want to back up stuff on a BD. I have a DVD burner, tons of DVD's and I don't see why I'd want to back anything on DVD's when I can just buy a cheapy HDD and plug it in when I need it.

I beg to differ, and thank you Blue for calling this what it is... namely spin.

Right now they're still pretty slow for burning and the higher priced ones are a bit faster. $15, yikes (I'm seeing some for $30 each), I didn't look at the BR media pricing. Those could be some expensive coasters.

I'd like to archive 50GB of stuff on fewer discs.

I've had a DVD in my machine for so long I cant remember when I made the transition (sometime in the mid 90's?) and it's only for the last year or two that games have been routinely released on the format.
Do you live in the US by any chance? In Europe games have been released DVD only for at least four years (UT2004) and DVD versions have been about since Baldur's Gate 2 back in 2000. For some reason the US was very stubborn when it came to moving onto DVD exclusively. I certainly hope we'll see Blu-ray arrive within a couple of years for large programs, at least as an option, because I already have software coming on 35 DL-DVDs and it is pretty inconvenient. Some companies in the music production industry already ship out products on external hard-drives. Blu-ray drives will need to halve in price before uptake increases significantly, though they're creeping into the justifiable range.

I don't know why people are whining for Blue-Ray support, even if it existed, there isn't a remote possibility that the game would be released on that media.

I'd like to archive 50GB of stuff on fewer discs. I hate tape drives and HDs don't last forever. The games aren't important until we get to multi DVDs. Seeing how big games like AoC are getting, we may not need to wait that long.

I don't know why people care about Vista. Stick with XP and use your Blu-ray drive with the existing software that works. Even the AoC devs do not care enough about Vista to support it any more than XP on launch day.

What's more, BlueRay will not be reasonable (for data distribution) until the price of the players drops, allot.

Adding DX10 support in your game engine for a few Vista early adopters makes no sense.
Vista has been out for coming up to a year and a half, the same with DX10 graphics cards. Vista is the default OS shipped on new computers and has been since close to launch, despite a few hilarious headlines saying that OEMs were revolting. You also have to consider that this game is designed to last several years - the PS2 had a DVD drive long before most people even knew what a DVD was. I think it's fair to say that the move paid off.

24.8 GB??? Why, if it gets any bigger they'll need a SECOND Blu-Ray disk!
Blu-ray discs hold 50GB, so no.

no way would I ever play a game that expected me to casually download 1.6 gig of patches and updates. Thats just sloppy work.
It's a MMO, that's entirely to be expected - internet download is the primary method of distribution, with physical media only designed for the initial install. The WOW 2.4 patch is 0.9GB and that's for a dated game with very simplistic graphics. Broadband download speeds mean multi-gig downloads take little time and we're talking about significant improvements / content, which is surely a good thing?

NEway, I'd rather developers delay content than rush it, particularly as the game is perfectly playable in DX9 mode. Any delay is a bad thing but the developers of AoC seem to be taking things very seriously and this could be the first serious challenge to WOW.

I wonder if this game will be the debacle that Hellgate was. I am one of the VERY FEW people that actually liked Hellgate, at least in theory, but I still hope this game isn't as overhyped as Hellgate was and that it is far more polished at launch

ive been playing hellgate since alpha and i still love playing it. i dont think anyone can come close to matching that train wreck though haha

How is this another cookie cutter MMO? If anything Ive read about this MMO is even remotely true, it will be anything BUT a cookie cutter. Shit this game would be worth checking out for the mounted combat alone!

So I should be happy that I can buy a next-gen OS that doesn't come with a player for next-gen media just because whiney MS backed the wrong horse?

Sorry, but I have higher expectations than a half-arsed support for a high end media drive than just storage.

What I mean is that until there's full support for that expensive drive, I (and most folk I know) won't be buying one, which is the same result as no support.

Oh, wait, there's still no Blu-Ray support in Vista is there?

Um, a Blu-Ray drive will work just fine in Vista. You need player software that supports it, but nothing in Vista prevents you from using it.
