Out of the Blue

Inspired by the realization that my DirecTV DVRs now offer the ability to stream from my PC, I have finally embarked on digitizing all our CDs, recklessly hurtling us into the 21st century. I'm actually not that upset over having procrastinated about this for all these years, since between advances in software and hardware, I've been able to crank through almost half of our fairly daunting music collection in just a few hours.

I use foobar2000 along with the foo_dop plugin to put stuff on my ipod. I've never even installed iTunes. If there's a file format that the ipod doesn't support (ogg, flac, ape) then it transcodes it on the fly and drops it on it.

It's not the most user-friendly setup in the world, but since 95% of players don't support ogg or flac anyway, an ipod's no better or worse than any of the others.

I'll have to see if I can emulate that in GTA.

Unfortunately the hard-disk based media player market has almost completely died in the past couple of years. The iPod has almost no competition in this field. For my last player, I had to use eBay to get a discontinued iAudio.

I'm back to a longer commute so might consider something that will hold my whole music collection again.

A car radio that supports USB and AUX on the face.
They range from $100-$500.

Grab any number of thumb drives hanging around, throw on a ton of music, plug it in. Then when you get to work, tap into your pc and continue.

Here is a model that is available almost everywhere. (Crutchfield is way over priced, but they have nice layout.)
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-PTy4SlShAEU/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?i=113MP438U

Just go to a big box store with a thumb drive and test them out. They work awesome.

/edit: Thanks comp! I will have them try it out.

I used to love iRiver's players too. I had one of their CD-based players when the HD based players cost too much for me. Then I got their H-120 hard-drive based player. They continue to knock out some beautiful hardware, but really don't focus on getting the features in that would knock the iPod off the throne. Plus they focus on their home market of Korea, so don't really care about the rest of the world.

Right now I make do with a Sansa Express. Way better than the Shuffle and about the same price. It's gumpack sized but comes with a display and SD-card slot also has a USB plug right on it and will do drag & drop and function as a thumbdrive. My biggest problem is it doesn't support proper playlists.

I'm back to a longer commute so might consider something that will hold my whole music collection again.

MediaMonkey http://www.mediamonkey.com ftw. There's a free version that does everything you need it to, and even works with iPods (and some other players). I use it with my first-gen gumstick Shuffle.

It rips to a variety of formats, and the best part is that you can have it convert tracks into an appropriate format as they are loaded. eg: rip all your music to FLAC, and then it will put it on the device as an mp3 (or whatever you choose) without affecting your original FLAC file. Of course it takes a little longer to load songs on your device, but I think it's worth it.

The 8 GB iPod Nano was a Christmas gift, and since everyone I know uses them, I figured if I had questions someone could help.

I use iTunes but all my music is MP3 format, so I can do what I want with it. Just set iTunes to use that as the default filetype and no problems ripping music.

If I buy music, I will go to Amazon or something and get the MP3. I bought the one song from iTunes since I had a gift card, but probably won't go that route again since the MP3 versions are probably available elsewhere....

I am not an Apple guy, but this is one prodect that works fairly well for me and accessories are plentiful.

My wife got a Shuffle (from her folks, the people who got me a Nano - they like me better! ), but I think she wants a Nano now as well. Maybe we can give the Shuffle to our son when he gets older....

iPod users -

Since I still have to give better answers to friends and family that don't listen to me (how come people don't listen to PC support people, then bitch and complain when something doesn't work or when it breaks because they went directly against what we told them?) - so what are other solutions for the iPOD...I like the one nin pointed to - but what about free shit?

I am tired of hearing "Well, my *friend's brother* works on computers, so he did it for me (or ordered it for me, or set it up for me, or told me how to do it)"

"Why didn't you do what I told you to do?"

"They said that I didn't have to do it that way"

"And where are they now? Why don't you have them fix it?"

"They said they didn't know how to fix it"

"oh - no shit. Because they are an idiot. By the way, since you didn't listen to me - support isn't free anymore."

I just received 2 of these from Thing Fling last night:

Got em for 20.00 a piece.

I think they are POS's but for something just to throw some music on and throw in the lady's car, should work just fine. nothing fancy, and runs off of a AAA - as I refuse to get her nano working for her again. Died fairly quickly.

You didn't have one of these, and we didn't have thumb drive mp3 players back in the day (2000).

I had an Archos - that acted like a drive to go. In fact, it was called a "Portable Media Device". Circa 2000.
Worked in file structure, also a drag and drop device.
We talked about this before.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archos_Jukebox_series

Sorry - I am just anti anything that needs software to load "files" onto it. It is 2008 - they should all be drag and drop, show up like a drive (OUT OF THE BOX) - and optional software for purchasing music.

/edit: In fact, I think I still have it (fried) in a box somewhere - but MrGrosser still has and uses his, even put a laptop hard drive in it to increase capacity.

It's a decent player, though I think too many people buy them.

I used to be a big fan of the iRiver players, I don't know what they're like now.

My Rio Karma was also awesome. Except:
  • It also needed 3rd party sw to treat it as a thumb drive due to it using some internal database

  • The internal hard-drive died

  • The only reason to get an iPod is if you want to buy your songs and such via iTunes. I kind of prefer iTunes to UnBox, and haven't tried any other online stores so I went iPod Nano since I got a deal.
