Is it because you keep getting your ass kick is the reason why you hated freedom force? What? FF was nowhere near as hard as JA2.
But it was real time. With pausing. Which means you spend most of your time hoping the AI does what you'd like when you'd like it to while you watch. That's not fun.
Turn-based gives you full control; the only thing limiting you is the stats and chance. On top of that, real-time adds AI, which is often the result of human error not your own.
No thanks. I'd rather not feel pressured to click like crazy to stop my troops from doing something stupid. |

I thought they were still in development... am I wrong, or are you judging them before they're out (which seems to be the trendy thing to do with games these days)? Do you really need to wait for those to be released? Have you seen the screenshots? Have you read the interviews with the developers? Have you looked at the track record of the developers?
Hey, I can punch you in the stomach if you'd like. You might want to wait until I actually do it before you decide it sucks. Sure, all the warning signs are there, and any one else I've punched in the stomach has said they'd rather I hadn't done it, but you can wait for it to actually happen if you'd like |

Crap. I forgot Irrational did Freedom Force.
God I hated that game. Had it been TB it might have been awesome. To each his own. Both Freedom Force games are among my favorite games of all time.
Maybe this actually will be worse than those new JA games. I thought they were still in development... am I wrong, or are you judging them before they're out (which seems to be the trendy thing to do with games these days)?

it is shocking to me that even the folks who made the original xcom cannot seem to get a modern sequel right. They've tried again and again (even on the gameboy) and it totally misses the mark every time. It might have something to do with a lack of funding to develop the game properly, but I dont think that is the whole story.

I predict it'll be a first-person shooter designed for the 360. With regenerating health. And copious amounts of aim assist. They'll probably call it X-Com:Epic Fail.
Sigh, you're probably right J.

Xcom is also several years older than either of those.

Jerykk I beg to differ, X-COM was nowhere near as popular as either Fallout or DeusEx, both of which were more character and story driven than anything out of the X-COM universe and besides which one is an RPG and the other a FPS (and as such kind of more attractive to the console crowd anyway). True but all those franchises are (or were) still unknown to most console gamers.

SO much fun that you only played the demo and didn't buy the game?
Irrational took a game that was much loved by cooperative players and realism fans and made it into a bad CounterStrike clone. The game was riddled with bugs and lacked features that even Swat 3 had years before. You had to pay for the "expansion pack" to just get the bug fixes and some of the old features put back into the game.
Only Irrational would make a game that was supposed to be "realistic" and make it so all the doors in the game are magical and always open AWAY from you no matter what side of the door you are on. It may sound like a minor gripe but when the game is about Swat teams making high risk entries into a CQB environment it is all the difference in the world. There are many examples of horrible design decisions like this in Swat 4.
The game looked pretty and had great sound. On a superficial level it was great. The gameplay was pants.

the success of downloadable arcade games on xbox LIVE (in terms of generating profitable revenue for small games that are easy to develop and sell) are making turn-based games a possibility again. I wouldnt rule out a TurnBased version of XCOM. Levine is involved and his games have been hit or miss but I prefer to remain optimistic when it comes to XCom.

| Remember that game that was supposed to be a 3D spiritual successor to X-Com called Dreamland Chronicles? That was looking pretty bad - I can see why they canceled it, and yet I was still sad when it died. I guess I'm looking for any game to keep the X-Com legacy alive enough so that a true sequel can be made one day. |

I bet that maybe 1% of console players know what X-COM is anyway. The same could be said for Fallout and Deus Ex, both of which are getting sequels.
I think it's mainly about publishers running out of ideas. Instead of making new IP, they resort to ones they've abandoned in the hopes that the original fans will spread word of mouth and build hype for the series resurrection. Of course, when the games are inevitably dumbed down, the very opposite happens so I don't know why publishers bother. Of course, I don't know why publishers do a lot of things they do.

This is only a rumour, nothing else. Why would they make another X-COM game? At least why would they make one for the console crowd? I bet that maybe 1% of console players know what X-COM is anyway.
