Hear Yee - Don't Buy GTA4 for the Kiddies

Crusading California State Senator Leland Yee is warning parents not to buy Grand Theft Auto IV for their children, apparently concerned that his constitutionally iffy violent games law and the game's "M" rating are not up to protecting our youth from its damaging effects. California Chronicle reports Yee is recalling Rockstar's shenanigans in the "hot coffee" scandal (story) in implying this should actually be an "AO" game:

"It is imperative that parents avoid purchasing this game for their children and always review the video games their children are playing," said Yee, who is also a child psychologist. "Unfortunately, the makers of Grand Theft Auto have a history of deceiving the ratings board and the public on the true content of their games. Parents beware: this game undoubtedly glorifies violence, is extremely realistic and designed for adults only."

GTA3 is basically PG-13 if it were a movie.

You obviously never got the BJ from the hooker while in the car, dropped her off, ran her over, and then hopped out of the car to grab her money.

I mean uh, I've heard you can do that...

edit:
Fine, rate it AO.

The problem there is most retailers won't sell AO rated games.

Fine, rate it AO. I have zero problem with that. I do, however, have a problem with gubment hypocrisy about the violence we see on TV that's seemingly Ok. Or that violence is OK, but sex isn't. Hey Yee, how do you feel about America's Army? Is that ok because the Army is using it as a recruiting tool?

French Teacher: Don't forget Mr. Powers, later your have a brief oral exam.
Young Austin Powers: Well, I hope it's mostly oral and not too...brief, baby.

The onus is on the parents. Some let their kids rent or go to rated R movies with violence and sex and some don't. There's no law man waiting at the door ready to slap them in cuffs if they do it. Make sure you know what your kids are into parents, stop be lazy about it and do your research.

Kids are going to find a way to get access to this stuff anyway. We need to stop putting the responsibility of parenting in the governments hands. It starts with this, and before you know it the government is deciding everything for you, and you've lost your freedoms.

This woman's statement has done nothing but drawn more attention and increased sales.

Like .... Why is "adult" content to you people and most of the world now always dealing with more sexual perversion, gratuitous ammounts of violence, killing and maiming innocents, gore, stealing extortion and the like.

Why isnt "adult" content ever being more responsible, doing good, helping others and not hurting innocent people?

Why do you guys only find enjoyment and satisfaction more and more every year only with ever increasing ammounts of this kind of garbage?

You people all need to seriously ask yourselves what kind of people you are and becoming as the days pass.

It's in movies and books. Why can't it be in a video game?

Or should video games stay "pure" and "innocent" the way that books and movies didn't?

The great thing about some games is that you do get to choose whether you're a responsible do-gooder who helps others and protects the innocent, or the complete opposite. Or even somewhere in between. Should we, as human beings, not be able to make the same decisions we make in our everyday lives?

GTA3 is basically PG-13 if it were a movie. It all depends on what what age "kids" and "children" mean.

obviously it is for adults only. It is an urban crime simulator. You run over people in cars and shoot them to death. What the fuck.

What do you mean, "horrid?" Do you mean the quality of the game was poor, or are you talking about the violence in it (sarcastically)?

Not a fan of the gangbanger reality show. I don't really need to hear the F word every other word. Previous games didn't use it that much.

Felt there was too much deadspace in the game, I really love the driving in the games, but when I have to drive across vast amounts of land it is just time killing. No sense in the world to make me do that. In fact, when you look at the maps and such, there is NOTHING in those areas, and no missions happen there, yet you have to drive through it all the time. Huge waste.

Minigames didn't bother me. I trimmed my dude out with muscle right away and some tatts. He stays that way, so I am cool with that.

Story really didn't play out all that great, quickly got bored dealing with ma' bitches.

Anyway. To each his own. Is it better than previous ones? Mechanically yes. Story, backbone, etc.? No.

I actually think VC is the best one.

i thought SA was horrid also. on pc that is.
I am picking up the PC version so I can do the Cops and Robbers mod someone linked to here a couple weeks back. Been reading up on it and looks fun.

Playing: GTAIII(PC),Two Worlds(PC), Dead Rising, Lego SW Saga.

GTASA sold 18 (wiki says 12 million....) million people. And that game is horrid.

I like GTA3, VC, and SA, but I think I like SA the best. Besides the silly exercise minigame, I think the changes and improvements in SA were great.

I know a lot of people didn't like the urban stuff, but personally I have just as little in common with mafia gangsters as I do with black gangbangers.

There are about 15 really sad things to say abot this whole thread and topic.

Actually, there's only one sad thing about this topic: That there isn't a PC release happening (yet...?).

and why no reaction from jacko the wacko?

Becuase he has accomplished his goal for his secret financial backer and brought down T2s value enough for a takeover.

There has been a reaction from Jack. He wrote a letter to the mom of Take-Two's C.E.O. asking her if she's ashamed of her son or if she even knows what he does.

I believe last year he and Take-Two reached a settlement where he wouldn't interfere with the release or selling of the game.

Meanwhile he's still dealing with legal troubles of his own stemming from his insanity.

Why isnt "adult" content ever being more responsible, doing good, helping others and not hurting innocent people?

Ya like a game where you can be a cop and go around busting people or how about a game where you can be an ambulance driver and see how many people you can save or even a fireman and your responsibility is to drive around a simulated city and put out fires. Why doesnt anybody ever put that kind of stuff into a video game
