Heh.. Yeah, that was done with the WinNT tree that will still have today with XP and Vista. Actually, Win95 started the 'win32' codebase and this eased the transition.

You said the same thing I did, in different words.

The recent Dvorak article missed one key failure of Vista. That was that a lot of software became incompatible with Vista and that was a major first for a MS OS. Win95 ran both Win16 and Win32 for the transition. The WinXP transition to the NT kernel had the WinNT and Win2K to ease the transition for the drivers. Not so with Vista.

And I still believe that this reduced compatibility was actually MS' intention and that MS actuallyshould go ahead a remove any legacy code.

In fact, the best thing MS could with Windows 7 is:

a) Start the codebase from scratch and build a completely new, 64-bit only OS

b) discard any support and compatibility for DOS, Win9x

c) offer limited WinXP/Vista compatibility but not in form of kernel build-in support but as a stand-alone emulator, included with Windows 7 (This way the legacy support does not bloat the kernel and does not affect system stability because the emulator is a separate thread.)

It really is time to scrap the past, get rid of it and all its flaws, limitations and build a completely new, future-oriented OS.

In case any one still needs serious Win9x,WinXP support, virtualization is the way to go.

The transition to this new, "stand-alone" OS will surely take some time and cost money but everyone will profit from the situation afterwards... and seriously how many people using WinXP or Vista still run DOS or 16-bit/pseudo 32-bit Win9x programs?

Microsoft has itself to blame, imo, for a significant part of the post-Vista Mac sales growth. The biggest hurdle MS has to greater profits, is themselves and their bureaucracy.

Someone high up at MS didn't know or ignored this vital method to transition software to new standards that MS has used in the past successfully.

Gee, I wonder why?

Finally we see the beginning of some real competition for Microsoft, something that the lack of has caused them to flounder.
