Out of the Blue

Happy Earth Day! It looks like it will be a lovely day around here to go out and enjoy the earth. In honor of the occasion, I am going to try and change my habit of leaving my computer on all the time, which I believe is better for the hardware, but is obviously wasting a lot of energy. I have a lot of making up to do, I've been running a PC 24/7 for something like 10 years straight now, but I can at least start by shutting it down overnight (of course the first time it fails to boot in the morning will probably put an end to this).

Earthy Links: Thanks Ant and Mike Martinez.
Play: Rollercoaster Creator.
MiniDrumPro.
Links of the Morning: 5 Habits for Greener Computing.
CNN Headline Shirts. Thanks Neatorama.
Stories: Nuke plant near NYC shuts down. Thanks Devicer.
Gun owners are the happiest people in the US. Happiness is a warm gun.
Women's skirts, trousers bleached in spate of mystery attacks in Sapporo. Thanks Devicer.
Science! Garbage In, Garden Out: Inside the High Tech Trash Disassembly Line.
The "Best Engineering Tool" in Space: Duct Tape. Thanks j.c.f.
Media: Techno toddler is raving with Bud girls.
Ducklings get rescued from a sewer grate.

If people would organize their shit (I hate Gmail the way it is, no folders, have to use an external program to organize it) instead of leaving everying in their INBOX....

I used to say the same thing about Gmail, until I started using it more. I use Thunderbird to get my Gmail, and have Gmail set to archive it after I've retrieved it. I usually delete an email after I've read it, but things like receipts from online orders I like to save. Saving those locally meant I had to backup my email's, but now I can delete them
from Thunderbird and know they're still archived on Gmail.

I didn't like not having folders too, at first. I only recently messed with the labels. It's different, but labels can be a very powerful and efficient way of organizing your emails. It's different and takes a while to learn how to use them, but I'm starting to like it better than dumping them into different folders. I still prefer to use Thunderbird and POP3 for Gmail, and only use its web interface when I'm not at home.

Way back before Gmail, when most free webmail services only gave you 1-2MB of storage, I forgot to backup my Outlook Express files before I formatted and re-installed Windows. Oops, years of saved emails down the drain, but now I don't have to worry about that.
