I think piracy is part of the "market". And it would not be growing if $60 was an acceptable price point.
If it is growing, and that's a debatable point, you don't think the advent of easy-to-use p2p programs and high bandwidth connections have anything to do with it? Go back 10 years, and trying to find pirated games was actually semi-difficult for someone who wasn't already involved with it. You couldn't simply fire up a torrent search engine click on a link, and download a game.
Of course, this leads to a point that I've made in the past - if piracy offers a much easier and more convenient way for someone to obtain software, then the distributers really need to change their business model. But ease of distribution doesn't have any real reflection on the price issue you are talking about.
but I can't. There is no demo. There is no way to try the software which I find insulting considering they have it attached to an online service... Why on earth would it not be possible to make a trial version of the game.
Why should they? Do movie theatres allow you to go in and watch the first 30 mins of a movie before you decide if you want to pay to see it? Does a baseball game allow you to stroll into the stadium and watch a few innings before deciding if you want to pay for a ticket? Does a stage play allow you to watch the first act before paying?
If you are truly interested in seeing the gameplay, there are ways you can do so. Fire up YouTube, and you'll find some good videos that'll demonstrate gameplay. But suggesting that you should have the ability to actually play the game without first paying for that privilege doesn't fly.
