steve nix is not ignoring market realities but he fails to admit that these assumptions are based on flawed statistics. someone is benefiting from not releasing the statistics of online sales and subscriptions but it clearly is not id software. It's not flawed because each developer and publisher is certainly privy to its own games' sales data, so they are well aware of the digital distribution sales of their own games. The fact is that the video game market as a whole has shifted to consoles from PC's for at least certain types of video games like first-person shooters. That is clearly reflected in the sales of cross-platform titles even when digital distribution and subscription sales are included. That is why we are hearing these rumblings from publishers and developers about a declining PC market. It has declined especially to the point where fewer titles of some genres can be profitable than in the past. The only thing that many of the complaining developers and publishers are getting wrong is the reason for the PC sales decline. It's not unauthorized copies that are causing this drop in PC sales. That has always been there. It's the shift to consoles by video game consumers so console sales are cannibalizing PC sales.
The reasons for this shift to consoles are varied and include the rise in popularity of HDTV's and other audio and visual improvements to the console game experience to more closely rival that of PC's, consoles' widespread use of innovative controllers like Guitar Hero and the Wii, and consumers' preference to play games while sitting on the couch in front of the TV as they do when they watch movies instead of in an office chair at a desk staring at what is usually a much smaller screen. One can certainly argue that game developers and publishers have helped cause this shift by focusing on console games to streamline game development and reduce support costs, and that Microsoft is also responsible for not simplifying game development and support on Windows. But, regardless of the reasons this shift has occurred, and digital distribution hasn't and won't reverse it especially since that option is available and growing more popular for consoles as well.
