GamesIndustry.biz has more quotes on the state of PC gaming, this time from Steve Nix, id Software Director of Business Development. Nix feels some of the hardcore PC gaming audience is shifting to consoles, something id cannot ignore:

"There are plenty of people who are diehard mouse and keyboard guys that may never go to console, and also right now, if you have the highest of high-end PCs, you're generally going to get a better visual experience," Nix said. "There's no console out there that's as powerful as a God machine right now, with a Quad-Core and a GeForce 8800 - it's very hard for any console to compete with that."

"So you still have PC players, and some players are just console guys, but have players moved over? Absolutely. We love PC gaming, and we continue to support PC gaming - but you can't ignore the market realities and the size of the console market these days."

ok, I was thinking about this at lunch.

I agree, the stats are borked, with more models going to digital distribution, the handhelds, web purchase, pop cap, etc etc etc, that sales are very LOW compared to actual. We will never know how much or how many titles were sold via these digital venues, which sucks, because I think it is a very large amount.

Now, on the console market, you can't ignore the fact that it is huge. But put it into perspective. A lot of us here are older and started with a console of one variant or another (PCs were ridiculously expensive or you didn't have access to one at all 'read punch cards'). But once PCs became avail, then it was the thing to have. Freedom on the PC was incredible. Games galore, no restrictions like the consoles, etc.

BUT - we lived a great age where PC games/gamers were elite. (To a point they still are) But I won't sit here and say that PC isn't suffering, because it is. Big name developers are shrinking, owned by stock holders, driven by profits from the largest base, and producing products that "gamers" may not want, just another iteration of "GAME X 20xx".

ALMOST every article you read, the line will come in "we target the largest base", which some of us never were a part of, and we must recognize that and be ok with it. MOST games aren't made for real gamers. They are made for the masses of sheep.

It isn't unique to games, it is everything in life, and I can't fault the system for catering to the largest base of drones. (I can't find a radio station over the air that is acceptable, haven't for years, thank god there is XM and MP3s, CDs, etc.)

I have faith in indie developers. I have faith in games I have played for years and still play. When Doom was the cat's ass, I thought I would never live without it. Then came, Quake, then AQ2, then HL, then DoD. I have been playing DoD and DoD Source for a long time. Just when I think I can't live without it and payer base shrinks, CoD4 comes along. I still miss some other games, but when it comes down to it, those were the big ones for me. (I know I missed a lot of games, but I hit the big ones).

There were a ton of games in between and a ton to enjoy. We have had dry spells and there is always the opportunity to go back an play the THOUSANDS of PC titles you missed. I recently found myself going back to replaying a lot of PC games that I didn't finish, couldn't run on my rig at the time, or didn't have time for at all.

I don't see myself doing that on a console. When I look back at the console games (had almost every console or played every console EVER) the games just aren't there for me.

I can't ignore the current generation though. I bought a 360 to enjoy games, as a gamer. But I will always be a PC Gamer first. My current favorite game is the game titled, "Microsoft XBOX 360 Achievements".

I respect the console market for what it is. An agenda catered to the masses. Nothing more. We will always have PC games, and they will always be better, more plentiful, look better, have the ability to mod, etc, etc, etc.

Anyway. That was my lunch....with a Cobb Salad Wrap, some chips, and a pickle slice.
