Sins Sells

Sins of a Solar Empire tops February Sales Charts points out that Sins of a Solar came in at #2 on the February NPD sales chart, in spite of most of the game's sales occurring online (thanks Gamer's Hell). Further, they point out that sales from Wal-Mart are not part of this chart, and that by their unofficial tally Sins may have been #1 if Wal-Mart sales are counted. Word is: "We hope over the coming weeks and months we are able to keep the game fun and interesting for you as we continue to provide free updates based on your feedback! Free updates is our version of 'copy protection'."

It must be due to the kind of copy protection Sins uses.

This is fantastic news for PC Gamers. Go Stardock and Ironclad!!!

Figuring out to prioritize research is a bit overwhelming atm.

I did not have the problem. But I can see how it can be. It gets pretty obvious soon.

And the constant pirate attacks are beyond fucking annoying when you're trying to learn the game. Can you disable them?
Yep. When you start a new game, go to the options and disable the pirates.

Alternatively, use the pirates. They attack whoever has the highest bounty on their heads. So before the pirates attack, go to the black market/pirates screen, and if you have the highest bounty on your head, buy the bounty higher onto somebody else so you are not attacked. This also allows you to attack specific enemies anonymously. It is a very useful feature!

There is a timer on the menu until the next pirates attack, as well as the icon at the top of the screen flashes a ~1 minute before they attack; so you know when to bid and check it and not worry about pirates in the mean time (unless you got no cash).

Add my to your friends list (I use the name Enahs) and lets play a small quick MP game sometime.

As someone who hasn't played a 4X game in long time, there's a big learning curve here and I need some time to get used to it.

Imagine how many copys they could have sold if stores actually stocked the game, still waiting for it to show up in my town.

I love stardock and its stance on NO COPY PROTECTION!!

They've even basically said you can feel free to install on your laptop and all your home computers. Their stardock download thing will download the game to whichever computer you install it on, so no need to worry about losing your CD's. And since no copy protection, no need to drag the cd around and insert it every time.

Copy protection pretty much only annoys legitimate customers

20. Need new way to calculate sales... Mar 18, 2008, 15:20 JohnBirshire

The way these sales are calculated reminds me of the way radio stations are rated. My family owns a radio station that plays underground rap/metal/alternative music, mostly from indie, unsigned, up and coming artists. Our radio station is very popular in our area, and has a devoted fan following. However, as you may imagine, our target audience is in roughly the 15-30 age range. When we shop our station for advertising revenue, companies always want to see our ratings. Well how are ratings calculated? They are calculated my mass phone calling campaigns, where they target random homes and have people fill out verbal questionaires about their listening habits. The problem? They only call land lines. The vast majority of our listeners in the 15-30 age range only use cell phones. As a result, our ratings are a fraction as to what they should realistically be. It is extremely unfair to the point of aggravating, to say the least, because jobs are lost and lives are impacted by an unfair system.

Moral of the story...

It almost seems like these sales ratings are calculated in the same way. Leaving out online sales? Leaving out mass retailers such as Wal-mart? How can you even begin to think that your ratings are even remotely accurate? Either get with the times or get out of the business, because organizations are using your unfair/misconstrued statistics to make decisions affecting the industry.

Sins is good, but Galciv 2's expansion is what I'm really waiting for.

Agreed, though I already own GCII + both expansions (haven't touched the beta though) and Sins. I even went out and picked up Object Desktop and ObjectDock Plus from Stardock--sure, I was interested in both but I really just wanted to support them some more.

I'm going to have to start a new SP game to try out the updated AI.

Oh, and +1 Love for Stardock and IronClad.

Edit: Just noticed this, haven't read it yet but I'm sure it's worth the read. Stardock's take on Piracy: http://forums.galciv2.com/303512

*dodges laser and rocket fire from Bluesnews people*

The graphics engine seems irrelevant to me. While i was playin this, i was constantly zoomed out to where all i saw were icons and 2d graphics and such. And in order to hear any battle sounds whatsoever, i had to zoom WAAAAAY in. So close that control became a big headache.

I would like to add some love for stardock and iron clad and all the other companies associated with stardock.

They seem like a consumer game business. They understand that what consumers say matters and they go out of their way to satisfy them.

Cliffy B and Epic have let me down with UT3 and with GoW for PC. On the GoW pc forum, all the cries for help have fallen on deaf ears. Epic does not give a shit and that's why we should not give a shit about Epic.

And UT3 blows but the sales figures of that game for PC have let them know how PC gamers feel. That's why a bunch of their guys there say negative things about the PC. Epic used to be a premiere PC developer, but UT3 has tanked on the PC, and that's what prompts their negativity about PC gaming in general.

But according to Cliffy B. PC gaming is toast due to rampant piracy! No Cliffy, the rep your company once had as a prestigious PC developer is toast, consider yourself replaced by stardock.

Stardock allows direct running of the exe, once it's downloaded, and you don't need a cracked one...

Good to know! I never used their download service.

Multiplayer it's good, single player suffers from weak AI like almost every RTS, make big army, zerg, win.

Why are cruisers even in the game?

The AI loves to send huge light frig or LRM fleets, which I routinely trash with cruisers. Heavy cruisers crush frigs like bugs, especially with cap ship support. Multiplayer still needs some balancing though.

Why use this clients after all? I bought Titan Quest Gold through Steam

You're still using Steam to download it, so I'd say you're using the client.

Love the Game (Sins). Been playing it a lot. I'm also hoping it lights a fire under Relics ass and they make a Homeworld 3. Obviously with a quality product, Space RTG/4X games CAN make money.
