He doesn't specialise in anything. He's a factory edition suit. He will understand hire, acquire, fire, tax minimisation, and increasing executive renumeration.

He's come from a string of mature, non-development companies, (fritolays anal leakage side-effect cholesterol substitutes notwithstanding).

There is little chance he'll maximise EAs ability to either create or take advantage of an emerging trend, they'll just miss the boat again, and try and acquire whoever does figure it out, at insane premiums (see current take-two bid).

Reality is, EA is caught between a rock and a hard place. On consoles, MS, Sony and Nintendo all self publish, publish for others and can reach retail directly.

Their 3 strongest competitors (Vivendi, Sierra, Activision) have merged/are merging into a single competitor, and that includes owning Blizzard and publishing for id, and Valve's steam is starting to represent a serious alternative channel.

companies in the gaming industry were ran with their consumer's best interests in mind rather than their shareholders?

It is the entire point of a publically traded company to increase shareholder value, any CEO that did otherwise would quickly be kicked out (and possibly taken to court) by the holders. You can start complaining about making money when a NPO starts making games.

This could be a good thing, to be honest can you think of any "gaming" CEO that has a good track record running a company this large? Usually breaking up industry old-boy clubs by bringing in "new blood" from a different industry is the best way to improve a corporation that has become stagnant (EA).

Maybe the powers that be thought they'd better put a stop to that.

You mean like God, Mother Nature, and the Four Cosmic Winds?

Hmm... I heard that EA had been making some uncharacteristically good moves recently (from a gamer's perspective). Maybe the powers that be thought they'd better put a stop to that.

He is President and Operations Officer. He doesn't need to know squat about games,

Actually working at Frito-Lay he probably knows squat

Why is it "hippie-like" to wish

a) Nobody said you couldn't "wish". b) Someone "wishing" isn't what we responded to. c) People trashing the new Pres/COO's ability for this position based on his previous experience with non-gaming companies is what we responded to.

companies in the gaming industry were ran with their consumer's best interests in mind rather than their shareholders?

d) EA is a publicly traded corporation. Without their shareholders the company ceases to exist. Corporations do what's best for them and their shareholders, this is the reality of it.

Speak with your dollar, as I and many others do.
Only EA game I've bought lately is Burnout Paradise, prior to that NFS-Most Wanted (2 years ago). I don't buy EA games unless it's an absolute must-have.

since we don't agree with this hippie-like idealism that people have of the gaming industry.

He is President and Operations Officer. He doesn't need to know squat about games, which really we do not know if he is a gamer or not. Just like gamers don't need to know squat about running a company...as they make it very apparent with every stupid word uttered with regards to Executive hiring.

Beat me to it, Dagok. I guess we should both get off these boards then, since we don't agree with this hippie-like idealism that people have of the gaming industry.

One of our current executive officers came from a gaming company. A very LARGE gaming company.

A lot of it is the 'good ol boy club', it is a social network of money grubbin' individuals.

They never need to know squat about anything, they are process individuals. The peons are the decision makers and doers.

Only gamers would think that the President of a game developer should be a gamer, and not someone who knows business.

BUT IT'S ABOUT THE ART AND GAMES MANNNNNN?

Now we need Derek Smart to come on and start whining/complaining/praising/bemoaning/ the move. Then follow it up with how it doesn't matter to him as long as he's getting paid.
