PotC Director Gets Game

'Pirates of the Caribbean' director seeks video game success on the Los Angeles Times features a Q&A with Gore Verbinski, director of the Pirates of the Caribbean movie trilogy, who is working on a video game. This is in spite of having just recently resumed playing games after allowing them to take a back seat to his film career. There are no specifics about his project, but between his background and his time away from this pastime he offers an interesting perspective on storytelling:

I'm also interested in anti-narrative. The initial response is that gaming needs good writing. I've heard that. They need screenwriters. Well, hold on a second. Before you jump to that conclusion, I don't want to impose cinema's narrative onto a completely different medium. I think that's naive. The fact that the player is also the audience means you shouldn't be imposing a scenario where the audience is passive. Don't put those rules onto gaming. So out of that came in my mind new forms of narrative. I said, "Well, wait a minute, what if there is zero narrative?"

What a surprise that people are bashing this guy's ability to make a game when they know nothing about it. Give me a break.

Let's look at Mr. Verbinski extensive portfolio of strong narrative films:
Only he didn't write a single one of those movies.

Considering that the PotC movies were complete and total narrative disasters bordering on narrative incoherence, Gore is a fine one to talk about wanting about creating games with "zero narrative."

Let's look at Mr. Verbinski extensive portfolio of strong narrative films:

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006)
The Weather Man (2005)
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
The Ring (2002)
The Mexican (2001)
Mouse Hunt (1997)

Indeed he offers a treasure trove of storytelling insight.

Here's your ship, you're a pirate, go do piratey things.

What!? Stop imposing all this narrative on me! I'll do whatever I want! ...Ummm...

...Ok, fine, I can't think of any to do.

I hate this game.

I figured it would be something like Morrowind where you discover the story through the characters, and writing scattered around-- you get as much of the story as you want to get out of it.

"Here's your ship, you're a pirate, go do piratey things."

No main storyline? What would they have, a roster of NPCs that you could interact with and who might interact with each other, result being a kind of procedural generation of a story?

That could work. That could backfire horribly too.
