THQ Director Blames Piracy for Iron Lore Closure

GamesIndustry.biz reports on a post on the Quarter To Three Forums by THQ director of creative management Michael Fitch venting his frustrations with the state of PC gaming following the closure of Iron Lore Entertainment (story). The lengthy post outlines concerns about rampant piracy, how Titan Quest's reputation suffered when pirates reported crashes (which were caused by failure to properly crack the game's DRM), complaints about hardware vendors creating compatibility issues, stupid users and bad reviewers. He concludes trying to look at the bright side: "Alright, I'm done. Making PC products is not all fun and games. It's an uphill slog, definitely. I'm a lifelong PC gamer, and hope to continue to work on PC games in the future, but man, they sure don't make it easy."

Jerykk has some very good points, and although the topic is now going on old, I still feel the need to expand on his already good post.

5. As stated previously by others, everyone who pirates would not have bought the game if they couldn't pirate it. And there are also those who pirate who then buy based off their experience of the game. I will not hypothesize at the difference between the two, but "Piracy is killing the PC gamin industry" is crap. If that was the case then the PC gaming industry would not exists today as the multi-billion dollar industry it is. Back in the wee-old days of Doom, Civilization, Warcraft, Kings Quest, etc Piracy was just as rampant as it is now. If it was killing the industry back then, then it couldn't have grown at the same time now could it???

6. A little bit of death in the industry would not be a terrible thing right now. Every Damn movie out there does not need a crappy PC game tie-in. If the PC gaming business wasn't so huge, maybe we would get fewer games, but they would be by companies "wanting" to write games for the PC, not every company out there that wants to make millions off the least amount of effort required.

(Sub point not related to the piracy argument) Yes, there are more issues related to hardware compatibility you have to deal with when writing for the PC, but the PC gives other benefits that consoles don't. A Mouse, 101 Keys, etc. Try using those instead of writing you game to be just 4 buttons and a directional pad, and maybe your game on PC would sell better than the Console variant.

Piracy is a fact of the PC gaming business, and is a fact of all digital business out there. When you go into the business realizing it is there, and planning for it is a requirement. Bitching about your failure to plan is ridiculous.
