GamesIndustry.biz reports on a post on the
Quarter
To Three Forums by THQ director of creative management Michael Fitch venting
his frustrations with the state of PC gaming following the closure of Iron Lore
Entertainment ( story). The lengthy post outlines concerns about
rampant piracy, how Titan Quest's reputation suffered when pirates reported
crashes (which were caused by failure to properly crack the game's DRM),
complaints about hardware vendors creating compatibility issues, stupid users
and bad reviewers. He concludes trying to look at the bright side: "Alright, I'm
done. Making PC products is not all fun and games. It's an uphill slog,
definitely. I'm a lifelong PC gamer, and hope to continue to work on PC games in
the future, but man, they sure don't make it easy."

PC games are a riskier investment than console games. If you buy a crappy PC game -- or one that doesn't work on your system -- you're [b]screwed[/b]. Stores won't refund it and you generally can't resell it, and if you can it's through something obtuse like eBay instead of somewhere convenient like Gamestop.
Couple this with hideous PC game demos, ones that now take 5+GB to install, and you understand a driving force behind piracy: examining a PC game to see if it's worth $50. Yep, I'm arguing that many pirates download games, see they're crappy/don't work, and uninstall them to make room for porn or whatever.
And honestly, very few PC games are worth $50-60. The last game I bought new was the Orange Box. Everything else I wait until it's <$20.
