This press release
officially announces Champions Online, an MMORPG in the works at Cryptic Studios
based on the Champions pen-and-paper superhero RPG. The game was first revealed
on the cover of an issue of Game Informer Magazine ( story), but
the announcement offers first details, including a Spring 2009 release date, and
word that the connection between Champions and Champions Online will extend to
information about the MMORPG being included in the sixth edition of the HEROES
system and Champions rulebooks, which will be released around the time of the
game. The Champions Online Website
is live, offering information,
forums, a developer blog
by Jack Emmert on the new game, and more. Here's the announcement:
LOS GATOS, CA--(Marketwire - February 20, 2008) - Cryptic Studios™, one
of the leading independent developers of massively multiplayer online
role-playing games (MMORPGs), announced today Champions Online™, their first
ever self-developed and self-published MMORPG. Champions Online, based on the
popular pen-and-paper Champions RPG, will give players the power of total
customization of their hero experience while they explore a vast universe of
richly detailed 3D environments. Champions Online is slated for release in
Spring 2009.
Cryptic Studios also announced today that it has acquired the Champions
intellectual property (IP) from Hero Games. First published in 1981, the
Champions role-playing game is one of the first RPGs to forgo the traditional
dice-rolling system of character generation in favor of a point-based system.
Cryptic Studios has licensed back to Hero Games the rights to produce Champions
RPG books, and the sixth edition of the HERO System and Champions, set to
release in 2009, will include rules on how to recreate Champions Online
characters and scenarios.
"We thought carefully about which IP to select for our next game," said Jack
Emmert, chief creative officer of Cryptic Studios. "I've been playing the
Champions RPG since it first came out and I love both the rich history and wide
array of compelling characters which made this an obvious choice for Cryptic
Studios."
"I am very excited to be working on Champions," said Michael Lewis, president of
Cryptic Studios. "We have a powerful development team, a better engine, more
resources, and a vision for a new kind of MMO experience. Bringing the operating
side of the business in-house enables us to be more efficient, get our
developers even closer to the customer, and ultimately make a better game and
long-term experience."
Champions Online is all about total customization -- it will offer a near
infinite amount of character customization so that all players will have a
unique game experience. Gamers will be able to create their hero's name, back
story, costume, powers and abilities as well as design their own personal
arch-enemy and his or her back story, which will guarantee a truly unique
experience.
"Champions Online brings a lot to the table. Gamers have literally billions of
options to create their own fully customized hero," Emmert said. "Couple that
with the unique character generation system and tons of beautiful, expansive
environments in which to roam, and Champions Online is going to be unlike
anything MMO fans have seen before."
For more information on Champions Online and Cryptic Studios please check out

Hell, I'd LOVE to see a MOG based on the Wild Cards series. Just imagine the RP possibilities - not to mention fun - of playing an Ace or a Joker. I'm going to pick up the new book soon. I hear it's quite good.
Tor just launched a new site for them too.

Anyone who digs the superhero/villain thing and has never read any of the Wild Cards books should. Roger Zelazny's Croyd Crenson = best hero ever!

The problem with so many MMORPGs, IMO all of them, is they are designed just to reward progress. They are not designed to just be fun to play. In good RPGs, leveling up is an satisfying bonus but not the reason to play the game. In a good RPG leveling up is something to look forward to but not the reason to play the game. The reward for playing the game should just be the gameplay. They all need to work on their writing, especially dialog.
Did they even list a good story as part of the feature set? Seems to me they just listed off the traditional checklist of carrots to keep you playing.

I agree. However, I just finished reading the article in Game Informer, and it *sounds* like the action will be much more action oriented than CoH/V. We will see, but I am hopeful.
The ability to build your own arch nemesis from scratch is just brilliant! The combat system isn't really what I was concerned about. CoH had a fantastic combat system in my opinion, with you almost always facing 3-6 enemies at once. This means you had to multitask between the enemies, figure out with one was the biggest threat, and concentrate on knocking them down so you could target the others. My most memorable experience in any MMO was playing CoH. Although the majority of PvP in that game is extremely unbalanced, if you get into a fair fight it was a blast. I was chasing down a villain and shooting energy beams at it, all the while flying through streets and over buildings. I eventually downed him and it was the most satisfying kill I've ever had.
The problem with CoX was the instanced missions. Essentially, every mission boiled down to killing bad guys. There were no delivery of messages or searching for some item - everything was combat related. And even more annoying was that the same layouts were used for said missions over and over again. Whether the mission was in a warehouse, office building, cave, enemy base, etc, you would see the same layouts over and over again. Eventually every mission came down to "Kill enemies. Click on glowing thing. Kill more enemies. Click on another glowing thing. Rinse and repeat."
Add to that that there was no true loot system (they kind of jerry-rigged that in there with the invention system) and you found you really weren't striving for much besides the next level.
It always made me mad that when new costume pieces came out (except for the invention ones), you had to BUY with real money to get them. For example, the Good vs. Evil edition had some spiffy new costume pieces, along with a jetpack and a teleporter device. In order to get those items, you had to either buy the Good vs. Evil edition or pay $10 to get the items. Why could I go on missions to EARN those pieces? Same thing goes with the Valentine's Day stuff.
What I did love about CoX was that it was very casual. There really isn't raiding and most missions can be finished in 30 minutes, if that. The zone-wide events like the Rikti invasion scale to your level, so ANY hero can take part. That part they really did get right. A lot of everything else though is just damn annoying.

Hopefully it's real action, where you have to do such odd things as aim and move into position or maybe move to avoid attacks.

Bingo. It doesn't matter how you lay those out, it's still the same old crap. It doesn't matter how good everything else is, if the gameplay itself is monotously repetitive the game will still suck. Let's just hope they've improved on their instanced level design a bit. Just a bit? I'd say a who lot. While the character creation is fun, the world looks good, and the powers are great, the actual gameplay in CoH/V is terrible.
But you can customize your characters! And your powers! And your arch-enemy! Just not the endless repeating office buildings, warehouses, and caves that we'll be forcing you to run through over and over and over again." Bingo. It doesn't matter how you lay those out, it's still the same old crap. It doesn't matter how good everything else is, if the gameplay itself is monotously repetitive the game will still suck.

"We thought carefully about which IP to select for our next game," said Jack Emmert, chief creative officer of Cryptic Studios. "I've been playing the Champions RPG since it first came out and I love both the rich history and wide array of compelling characters which made this an obvious choice for Cryptic Studios." Translation:
"We thought very carefully about which IP to select for our next game," said Jack Emmert, chief creative officer of Cryptic Studios. "And since Marvel dumped our ass because we probably didn't change our mantra much from City of Heroes, and DC didn't return our phone calls, we landed on this universe that not many people have actually heard of because we really had nowhere else to go. But you can customize your characters! And your powers! And your arch-enemy! Just not the endless repeating office buildings, warehouses, and caves that we'll be forcing you to run through over and over and over again."
What's funnier is that I saw these two quotes in an interview regarding the now-defunct Marvel Universe Online:
I asked the Microsoft Game Studio's Pape why they would want to get into the massively multiplayer online market when it is currently so dominated by World of Warcraft.
Not only is Microsoft Games not worried about World of Warcraft, Pape said, the game's tremendous success is one of the motivations for getting into the market. That pretty much contradicts the exact reason why MUO was cancelled. And then there's this gem:
"Our passion for Marvel comics is pretty well known, especially my own," [Jack Emmert] said. "We wanted to do this thing because of our love of Marvel comics. The main thing we can't stress enough is the breadth of the Marvel Universe. Their entire history is at our disposal." Replace "Marvel" with "Champions" and you've got pretty much the same damn quote as listed above.

At least they're promising not to use the traditional MMORPG fighting system.
"Once an animation completes, the player can attack again. There are no lengthy recharge times, and no boring auto attack. Instead, Champions Online has the fast-paced gameplay normally found only in fighting or action games" |

It's a shame... if marketed right and built correctly allowing a lot of customization of the UI and stuff like that, Marvel Online could have been a real competitor to WoW since it has good name recognition. I've never heard of Champions before this release... but viewing the info about it I am pretty excited. City of Heroes is good but limiting, I hope this will take some lessons learned from WoW and improve the superhero formula even further.
