EA announces the weekend of September 7, 2008 as the worldwide release date for
the PC, Mac, and mobile editions of Spore, the highly anticipated evolution
simulation (no release dates for the console editions are offered). This
confirms the delay predicted by analyst Mike Hickey a couple of weeks ago
( story), which is the latest in a series of setbacks for the
game, which was even dubbed "vaporware" ( story) by Wired (though
one could argue that list is "tired," rather than Wired"). On related notes,
Level Up follows this up with some Spore-mania, which includes
Will Wright Gives Level Up the Scoop On Why Spore Is Taking So Long to Get
Right--And Why It Will Be Worth the Wait, Part I and
Part II, a two-part Q&A talking with the game's lead designer, and
this Q&A with executive producer Lucy Bradshaw on how the Nintendo DS, Mac,
and Mobile Phone editions of Spore evolved. Here's the announcement:
Redwood City, CA - February 12, 2008 – Get ready for the next Big Bang
this fall! Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) and Maxis today announced that
Spore™, the highly anticipated game from the creators of The Sims™, will be
available at retailers worldwide the weekend of September 7. Spore will be
available for the PC, Macintosh, Nintendo DS™, and mobile phones.
“The wait is almost over,” said Maxis Chief Designer Will Wright. “We’re in our
final stages of testing and polish with Spore, and the team at Maxis can’t wait
to see the cosmos of content created by the community later this year.”
Spore gives players their own personal universe in a box. Create and evolve
life, establish tribes, build civilizations, sculpt entire worlds and explore a
universe created by other gamers. Spore gives players a wealth of creative tools
to customize nearly every aspect of their universe: creatures, vehicles,
buildings, and even UFOs. Players can then seamlessly share their creations with
the world or explore infinite new galaxies created by other gamers.
Consumers can visit www.spore.com to sign up
for the Spore newsletter or check out all-new screenshots and video of the
game.

So I guess we can expect the religious right to be all over this game as an evil contraption of the devil to undermine the church. That in itself would make this game so much more entertaining. I wonder what the Westboro Baptist Church's stance will be on it.

So it's really more of a god simulator? Yeah, I'm sure they'll have no problem with that.

So I guess we can expect the religious right to be all over this game as an evil contraption of the devil to undermine the church. I wouldn't be surprised if they did. I have some issues with calling it "evolution simulator" tho, because from the sound of it, thats exactly what it isnt. It effectively portrays god-like intervention at every step. Evolution is the opposite, it is the process of natural selection, it DEPENDS on being unguided, thats why it works, it produces a vast variety of randomly varying copies which are non-randomly selected for survival by its environment
But I guess its a nice touch to announce this on Darwin Day http://www.darwinday.org/

I'd rather play Black&White 3, than Spore which will suck harder than Whore.
At Least I know what to expect from B&W3, good solitaire fun while it lasts the few days or weeks, at least I enjoy BW while playing. Wright is to Spore as was Roper to HellGate London. Gonna Suck Donkey balls.

This is definitely a wait-and-see game for me. If it gets good reviews and a few patches I'll be all over it. If not, then I'll reconsider when it hits the bargain bin.

"Looks like is EA forcing this out the door early just to meet their 4th quarter profit goals. Typical. "
Of course its typical, most US companies work on the FINANCIAL calender duh. If it doesn't go onto price lists then they lose out.
Anyway, Spore was listed on web stores for much earlier than this. bugger.

It looked interesting when they first announced it. The hype this one created in me quickly faded into darkness afterward.
I might change my mind once they release it and reviews pop around, we'll see.

The game still interests me as it did back in 2001/2002 or so, and there hasn't been anything that's taken it's place. I'll still get it, doesn't matter how long it took.

I swore I wouldn't buy EA anymore, because them forcing stuff out the door and having a patch waiting on delivery date, but I've got to get them credit, they've got some great titles behind them. I';m looking forward to spore, and despite my better judgement, I'll probably get it... My vote, it's out Sept 7, and there will be a patch waiting...

Setting dates means the producers (our favorite EA) put their foot down. Doesn't mean it will be READY, just means it will be on the market.
Money decisions don't make for good games, they make for product. Which will be bought in any case. I'm sure Apple will point to it and say "see we have games!" No matter the quality.
