UT3 Patch Plans

BeyondUnreal has updated patch notes for a new beta for patch 2 for Unreal Tournament III, saying the patch is now entering private testing. They highlight what's changed since the last set of patch notes (story), and have word that the new version may be ready for prime time soon: "With any luck, the patch will not be in testing long so we can get these many important fixes into the game as soon as possible!"

Did I call names or just state an observation that there is a lot of hatred (and/or anger) here in the BluesNews forum?

Sounded like name-calling to me. Have a look:

Welcome to BluesNews - regular home to a bunch of hate filled people just aching to boost their exceedingly low self image by criticizing and judging games and people as much as possible.

You pretty much called the readers of Bluesnews a bunch of hate-filled people with low self-esteem.

As for your question: "Who would you be without someone or something else to judge and criticize?"

I would be very bored. Without judgment, there is no meaning. Am I to perceive a serial child molestor in the same light as an altruist? Should I accept that everyone is the same and that nobody can be special? Without judgment, there is no need to excel or promote change for the better. Hell, lack of judgment is the reason why so many worthless products sell like hotcakes while far more deserving products are doomed to fail.

Lack of judgment is complacency and complacency is the death of progress.

"Wouldn't your post constitute the judgment of other people..?"

Jerykk, maybe but not necessarily. Did I call names or just state an observation that there is a lot of hatred (and/or anger) here in the BluesNews forum?

Either way I do appreciate your asking the question. It's valid. Indeed I will ask myself that. Also I ask that you ask yourself the question that you quote of me and that is - "Who would you be without someone or something else to judge and criticize?"

Overon of course. I'm not asking that we stop criticizing games exactly. It can be done in a constructive way or a destructive way. Or rather, in a negative way, the criticism starts to take on a mob mentality that then loses credibility and weight in the industry.

Tell a programmer you hate his works, he'll likely ignore you. Tell him constructively what needs to be improved or what you saw as flaws in the program and he might listen.

Thanks for the feedback. Ironically, mostly the subsequent posts I found to not be hate filled. Okay one or two but otherwise the observational facts were noted instead of judgments. Even in the one of my posts quoted here in this thread, in which I seemed to criticize a game, I was noting facts and not spewing vile words.

Here's a post that is critical but not hate filled:

I didn't like the game very much. I found the graphics to be bad and the controls funky. I found few people online playing it and that made it hard to play the game at all.

Here's a typical type of post I see here that is hate filled:

What a huge pile of dog sh*t. OMG this game sucks and I wish these so-called developers would just go to f'ing hell. I can't believe how they just rush this crap and release it with SO MANY BUGS! I wish I had never bought this game!

There's a difference between these two expressions and its not all that subtle.

My call for objective rather than subjective posts is my call to make BluesNews a better place to learn about games.

Perpetual debt is slavery.

The real reason that the UT3 drop is occuring is that we need PATCH 2. It's been a difficult start with a number of the current issues. If you want to play on a server with new maps...you get errors, UT3 errors on URL's/files not found/etc. When PATCH 2 is released, we be much better I hope. I'm a UT99 old-timer. I'll wait this out for the PATCH 2, but most new UT3 users will NOT. Poor release with bugs included. FRAG ON.

100 players in multiplayer oriented game is a complete flop.

As such, those 100 players add up to practically nothing when you're looking for, say, Team Instagib on Deck 16 (or whatever the UT3 version is called).

Unless those 100 players only play Team Instagib. All you really need is one good server with a consistent player base.

A hundred players is a hundred players, thousand, million, doesn't matter there's still someone to play with. You have no reason to be picky. Nor do you need to be playing the game with the largest group.

You forget that different players prefer different game modes and/or maps, and look specifically for games hosting those combinations. As such, those 100 players add up to practically nothing when you're looking for, say, Team Instagib on Deck 16 (or whatever the UT3 version is called).

My biggest gripe with UT3 is that it doesn't seem to have the staying power that previous UT games did...

Well of course. It's the same game we played in 1999. Just looks a lot nicer and has a couple more game modes. The people who still like the old game play will stay and people who don't will move on to other games.

Why do the Gamespy stats matter? UT3 isn't a game for everyone.

My biggest gripe with UT3 is that it doesn't seem to have the staying power that previous UT games did... though now that I think about it 2k3 had that problem too. Hopefully epic will release some bonus packs soon or they'll fix the map redirect problem(IIRC it's addressed in this patch) so server admins will be more inclined to have custom maps.

Except that his point is completely spot on when he says that's ALL anyone does here........

Seriously? I didn't notice, of course I like games based on good gameplay, story and RPG elements. Due to the length of time it takes to make games, I could see how this happens though, as if a developer makes a great game (rare) then it could be another year or more till the next great game comes along.

I didn't see that as his point though and not sure where your going with this, of course gamers are critical in their debates about games, gamers are the only ones capable of critical debate about games, unless maybe some get their critical gaming news from fox noise.

Brazor, those Gamespy statistics are not tied to people specifically using Gamespy to play their games. It has nothing to do with it. Those stats are collected through master server scan and players on servers that send heart beat to master server for each game.

Case in Point, Red Orchestra OST, basically noone uses gamespy clients to play that game and yet it shows all the players on their stats.

Those stats are fairly accurate. You can test it yourself by scanning a game you own for all players on servers at any time.

My biggest gripe is the netcode. Everything you do is affected by your ping, meaning that even jumping on the hoverboard or firing a weapon is delayed until synced with the server - this basically means you have to pre-empt everything you do and seriously detracts from the fun, particularly for a more casual game. I prefer the netcode of Team Fortress 2 where it doesn't even feel like you're playing online - the disadvantage is that occasionally you think you kill someone but it turns out they fired first.

NEway, UT3 is a really good singleplayer game thanks to the bots. It's a real shame that online play is so little fun because the gameplay is amazing and singleplayer is a blast. I'm glad I bought it because I support the direction they took with the game - it's just a shame that few others did.

I havew to agree, I bought it all excited..Played for 2 hours and now its sits.... Im sad

Hope some more mod action comes quick. Of course with the 2 ton gorilla in the room (COD4) how can any Multi do any good right now.

After the hype (and fun) of COD4, and some serious mods(freeze tag anyone?, Micro mods? ) I expect UT3 to have some legs.

Not all players or games use Gamespy. So don't expect those numbers to be an accurate assessment.
Some games aren't for all players.

Jonphan:

From post below:

UT3 is ranked 29 on game stats compiled by gamespy. the original UT and UT2004 get more players today than UT3. even bf1942 has more players online than UT3. need more proof? go see the stats here...

http://archive.gamespy.com/stats/

As you can see, negativity in many posts regarding UT3 has some basis and statistics to back it up.

Riiight! No one look here nothing to see, there has never been a good reason for any gamer to ever criticize a game developer or publisher.

Except that his point is completely spot on when he says that's ALL anyone does here. It's outright ridiculously silly how every thread goes around here... nearly every genre of game has that one single game in a given genre that everyone has latched onto, which somehow magically makes every other game in the genre suck for the next few years.

Wow. Carver posted in a thread about Unreal Tournament 3. Yet another post of his confirming his douchebaggery, and insistence in posting in every single thread about a game that he cares nothing about.

He's probably spent more time posting on Blue's about it than actually playing it. What a jackass.
