Mark Rein - Consoles "Stealing" Hardcore PC Gamers

The Mark Rein interview on the Guardian Unlimited (thanks BeyondUnreal) offers a conversation with the Epic executive, discussing the company, its games, the Unreal engine, and PCs versus consoles, offering this outlook: "I'm a real fan of the PC, but yes, consoles are definitely stealing a lot of hardcore gamers from the PC. When Call of Duty 4 came out, I heard some of our guys sitting around talking about the great game they'd had last night and I'm like, 'Hey guys, what server are you playing on? I'd love to come and join you,' and they said, 'Just send us a friends request,' It was at that point I realized they were all playing it on console. Plus, the sales of the console versions are something like ten times the sales of the PC versions."

Repeat Offender - I'm curious what your setup is to make the M+K comfortable.

I just use the coffee table. The couch sits fairly low to the ground so I'm not really hunched over. I was originally planning on making some kind of special platform just for M+K but honestly, after a few hours I got used to it and decided I didn't need to try and emulate sitting at my desk.

What exactly am I supposed to be jealous of again?

The superior PC version which has better graphics and faster game speed?

It's not all about graphics. Even so, there is nothing bad about 720p/1080p graphics. Have you even seen some of the "next-gen" games? Not many people would find fault in the visuals of a game like COD4 and if you do, then your priorities are screwed up. You don't need ridiculous resolutions in order to have an enjoyable gaming experience.

I don't have to screw with driver issues, viruses, software conflicts, etc.

Uh, so you stopped using computers entirely?

Please. The fact that I feel less compelled to upgrade video cards, motherboards, CPUs, etc means a whole lot less hassle. I don't need to stay on top of the latest video drivers in order to surf the web, do some word processing, email, programming, etc. I can leave my current PC as is for several years and it won't affect my day to day work.

Consoles "Stealing" Hardcore PC Gamers

This is as priceless as Ciffy B saying that PCs don't have the juice to play GEARS LOL!

Bottom line bad ports kill sales..blame consoles or who ever you want Epic bad ports kill sales. UT3 is not doing well because Epic forgot what got them where they where.

PS3 (console) hud, game browser that blows, smaller maps than in ut2k4 no support for 64 players on release day, Linux server support that came late (should have been out with the demo) etc…

PC gamers just like console gamers have specific tastes. How or why Devs forget that is beyond me…Give PC gamers what they want & sales will be good, give pc gamers bad ports like GEARS, UT3 or UBI stuff well don’t cry if you stuff does not sell & don’t blame consoles for stealing gamers. 99% of the hardcore PC gamers I know would never switch to a console as primary gaming system..they will get one to make sure the kids don’t hog the gaming rig & for entertainment when people visit. I could buy a Wii for the lady & her friends or so my mother can play bowling. I will always be a PC gamer first because they offer what I’m looking for.

PS. CoD sales shouild never be used as examples...they could have done like Oblivion & less pirated version would float arround. Activision dropped the ball..

For those people slamming gamepad's for FPS's, quit being so elitist. You're missing the point. Yes, M+K is superior to a gamepad, here's a cookie. Consoles are becoming more popular because they are accessible and cost efficient. Developers are going to move to where the money is.

No, nobody is missing that point at all. We all know and accept that consoles are more accessible. What we're arguing is that genres that are inherently superior on the PC (like FPS) don't belong on consoles. We don't care about profits or accessibility, we care about quality and quality has diminished since consoles became the lead platform for FPSes.

I don't own a fancy tv, but would NEED one to fully appreciate what the console has to offer....

I wouldn't have got a PS3 if I hadn't got a 40" Sony Bravia (W3000) to make the console purchase worthwhile (screen quality noted in previous post as being one of my problems with consoles previously).

One of these days I'll take a few pics of my setup and post them up in OoTB.

I'm doing the same thing...M+K on the couch. I am going to get someone to fabricate a stand for me for the mouse, that will rest on the couch arm. But for now I'm using a 1 inch binder with the plastic side down on the leather to prevent slippage, and then a mouse pad on the other side. It doesn't wobble much at all. And wireless keyboard in my lap. I've been playing Witcher and Crysis (came with new video card) like this and it hasn't really been a problem.

Initially I said I would not play any FPS titles on the 360 because I didn't believe I could get used to the controller. After giving it a shot, I proved myself wrong. You CAN get used to it.

People can get used to anything. I'm sure if you played an RTS with a steering wheel for long enough, you'd get used to it. That doesn't make it less retarded.

my pc lets me play all the pc games. if i want to play all the console games I need to buy 3 consoles, which will cost a fortune. You cant play wii sports followed by halo without unplugging something and purchasing 2 flipping boxes...

And the argument is not that "owning a 360 can be expensive" the argument (since you seem unable to grasp it yourself) is that the 360 is not any less expensive than PC gaming in the long run. You also conveniently left out the $50 a year to play online in your failed rebuttal, I hardly call that a weak argument.

What about the HI-DEF TV?

I don't own a fancy tv, but would NEED one to fully appreciate what the console has to offer....

but I can not stand using a thumbstick to drag an oversized reticle over the screen at such a slow rate.

That sums it up in a nutshell. Trying some FPS demos on the PS3, it's agony trying to make quick reactions to an enemy popping up 45 to 90 degrees in either direction. You can't react, turn and fire, and get a headshot in less than a second with a gamepad like you can with a keyboard and mouse.

I like my PS3. This coming from someone that hasn't owned a console for 7 years (PS2 was last), and refused to for several reasons. M+K control, High res monitors vs interlaced TV's and low res games, poor online funcionality, and at the time I was playing MMO's, which PS2 did eventually get, but still without M+K...kinda defeats the purpose of MMO's when you can't communicate with others.

So while I was anti-console for a long time, mainly for these reasons described above, there are games I like to play on consoles. Fighting games (not so much anymore, but SF4 and SC look awesome), sports games, arcade style games, and Racing games. If the FPS games on the PS3 would all support M+K control I would play them. I still might force my way through Resistance at some point, but it's low priority.

Point being...they both have their place. But the consoles are becoming more attractive due to their features and functionality.

41. What a tired argument Jan 31, 2008, 14:58 Veinman

I do most of my gaming (for now) on the 360. My PC got too out-dated, and demands on my time made me less and less willing to deal with drivers, patches, etc.

Initially I said I would not play any FPS titles on the 360 because I didn't believe I could get used to the controller. After giving it a shot, I proved myself wrong. You CAN get used to it. Sure, I am not as good as I would be with a keyboard and mouse, but I'm not that great anyway.

I do plan on getting back to the PC when I can build a new one. But it won't make me toss the 360. And FWIW, the PC digs its own grave with things like copy protection, games demanding certain versions of drivers, etc.

I myself can’t find a reason to buy a console. They don’t proved the kind of entertainment I enjoy. I like to mod games and why I still play Oblivion to this day.

I had gone off multiplayer FPS until Team Fortress came along and show me they can still be a hell of a lot of fun without vehicles and sprawling maps.

UT3 on the other hand turned out to be the worst in the UT series. It feels like Ut2k3 all over again with its flashy graphics but lack of real content. I am also tired of Cookie cutter Unreal 3 engine games, they all look the same.

Crysis singleplayer I did enjoy, multiplayer is just far too buggy.

The next game I am looking forward too is Sins of a Solar empire, I don’t see this sort of game coming to the consoles any day soon.

They can go play their kiddy console version. I'll stick with PC. They'll be rather jealous when we start playing some kick ass mods, and they stuck with the basic modes that came with the game.

Jealous? I play UT3 on the PS3 with mouse and keyboard. I have access to user created maps and mods all at no additional cost. I didn't have to upgrade my PC, ONCE AGAIN. I don't have to screw with driver issues, viruses, software conflicts, etc. I'm gaming on a 60" hi-def set from the comfort of my couch. What exactly am I supposed to be jealous of again?

Maybe this theft would be lessened if developers like Epic stopped making console-friendly FPS titles.

I made it a point to buy the PC version of CoD4. Why? Because using a control pad sucks. Mouse and Keyboard for life! As long Microsoft refuses to support a keyboard and mouse, you won't see buy any FPS games on the 360.

The reason PC gaming is dieing is because Mods . I know people still playing old games like doom, quake , and half-life . People bought those games and ended up getting 10-20 games for the price of one. Do that with a console.

Another reason PC gaming is struggling is a lot of the games are nothing more then crap ports . No thanks , I'd rather play older games that have substance .

One more reason I think PC gaming is hurting, is that the tech is getting harder to program for. Gone are the days that 5-6 man teams could make a game like Doom. Heck I remember 2-3 friends made a whole mod game in like 2-3 months with quake engine , I remember making 2-3 levels in the old build engine (for Blood, and Duke 3D ) in 1 day. Graphics have gotten so hard that most dev teams have 30-40 guys doing just that. So the barrier to enter is much higher now then back in the old days.

Yes but you also pay to play online

I have a PS3. On-line is free.

pay $10+ more per game

I rent most of my games through GameFly. Since I'll usually play 1 to 2 games a month, this works out to around $15 a game - much cheaper than PC games, which are not available for rent.

get nickle and dimed for every update and bonus material

This does bug me, but I have an easy solution. I just don't buy them. This is also starting to change with games like UT3 and Little Big Planet.

I'll certainly agree that the gamepad is lousy for FPS. It's like playing with oven mitts on, so I'll always choose the PC version if it's available. The problem is that, as HardCore stated, this is becoming less of a choice as most developers have already jumped ship, and PC gamers end up with console ports, usually months afterwards.

I'm a diehard PC Gamer, have been for over 25 years... before the "PC" technically existed.

That being said, you just can't argue with the above quote. I didn't buy any of the consoles for this generation, but in a few years when the next generation comes out...I may have to finally hang up my hat, and hop on the bandwagon. The reasons for remaining a diehard PC gamer are slipping away everyday.
