Out of the Blue

There were some interesting comments about the photos of my office I linked to last night. A few folks mentioned it not looking like an attic, I thought I was clear in saying it is a finished attic, so while it can be hot, it is quite livable. There were also comments on the cleanliness, I can honestly say I did not clean for the photos (as the layer of dust under my chair demonstrates). I recently got a new desk and with about five times the surface area to work with, and I just haven't been able to get it too messy yet, but where there's a will there's a way. The angle of the shot also doesn't show the pile of boxes in one corner, but that's the magic of art direction (just like the Escher-esque monitor image).

Crap - missed yesterday around here - so I will post a quote from a speech of MLK and how scary it is that it fits today.

The time has come for America to hear the truth about this tragic war.
Even when pressed by the demands of inner truth.
Men do not easily of assume the task of opposing their governments policy - especially in time of war.
There comes a time when silence is betrayal.

There is a video that is a little to long on the webs....they should cut out all of the garbage in the middle and just get to the point.

I don't know what is going to happen with the politics over the next year - but obviously people who don't have their head up their ass are worried.
Big business is running the war and this country.
We are headed in the wrong direction.....
When will people wake up?

Man, that's just wrong. You know the old "feed a cold, starve a fever" thing? To me it's always a cold. I don't think I have EVER gone one entire day without eating when sick

I had the chicken pox once - I was 16, ON MY 16th B-DAY I GOT THEM.

I had just spent a week in bed with an allergic reaction to eating shrimp (thought I was old enough to not have allergies anymore - boy was I wrong)I only ate 3. They tasted sooooooo good....wow, did I pay for that.

I was back at school for 2 days and got Chicken Pox.

I went a lot of days without eating...lost so much weight.

I could touch my thumbs together under my abs! It was sick.

4 days with no food and a few no water huh? Sounds almost like the bug I had this weekend. I drank as fluids as I could but I did not eat an entire thing for 3 days straight. It was some high fever cold with other symptoms i wont describe in detail here. I got them headaches to at the end of it. My back and the back of my head and eyes were killing me!

suggestions on laptop reliability?

I've had two Toshibas now for several years, and I haven't had any problem with either of them. And I treat 'em kind of rough at times (knocked off the couch, etc.)

I really don't know what everybody's issues are with Vista. As I used to joke about in my .sig, it's just XP with eye candy. Couple of minor differences, but it works fine. Yes, it's more of a resource hog, but so was XP over 98. Just order your laptop with 2 GB of RAM ...

While I have everyones attention, any suggestions on laptop reliability?

I'm not sure there's such thing as a reliable manufacturer anymore. They all seem to put out their lemons along with quality products. My best advice is when you find a machine you like do a search on its model number and look for any complaints related to it. For my part I have an HP DV9225us, great machine, but it and many of the other DV9000 series appear to have some motherboard and/or gpu problem that will leave your machine unusable. Such is what happened to mine. For its part HP issued an extended warranty for the problem, and the repair time is lightning quick, but there's still no guarantee the problem won't happen again.

I think you're going to have a hard time finding a laptop that doesn't come with Vista. What's worse, or so I've been reading, is in many cases XP drivers do not exist for some of the laptops, so even installing XP yourself might not be an option. You'll probably have to call and ask, you might have more luck with the boutique vendors who seem to be more willing to customize (alienware, falcon northwest etc.).

In my opinion, Vista isn't too terrible (though still in the not good category), depending on what you're going to use your laptop for. I heartily recommend 2gb of ram is you're stuck with Vista though, that seems to help with the unnecessary bloat.

Yeah! Today I have been able to hold down small amounts of solid food. Wheee! Only ~ 4 days without food and 3 without water. Talk about fun hunger and dehydration headaches!

While I have everyones attention, any suggestions on laptop reliability? It's been several years since I've had to purchase one for the business..in particular I'm looking for n full keyboard with the keypad AND Windows XP if at all possible.

Any manufacturer I should stay away from in particular? I've bought Toshibas in the past with some luck.

Still. How in the hell do you use the mouse? Do you put it on the desktop?

I edge the keyboard a bit more to the left and am fine... I am an old school DOOM player, and use a pretty high mouse sensitivity. That was, however, the one advantage my recently departed old desk offered, a much larger keyboard tray that was much more suited to sharing with the mouse.

Also, I have to call you. You are a liar. Liar liar!
You at least straightened up for the photo, which is technically cleaning. I can clearly see in the previous photo on the screen that you turned down, something in front of the right desktop speaker, the coffee thermos in a different place and some small clutter in front of the remotes.

I am so busted. I moved the Lava Lamp back to where it belongs from in front of that speaker (I have to move it to reach the switch to turn it on), and even drank some coffee along the way. Little did I realize that CSI: Enahs would catch me!

You betrayed complicities personal love for all things Blue and lied to us. You are a horrible man!

I knew if I was too forthcoming the truth would come out. Now my horribleness is exposed for all the world to see!

I was curious to know the reason, I just put it the way I did for laughs (hey, so what if they were just mine!). I hope I didn't scare Blue back into his shell, though.
