ECS is trash I'm finding out the hard way that it's more suitable for entry-level/small-time office work. Clearly not a definite "gamer" board (I so miss my BFGTech nForce Ultra 4), though I figured at the time that it was inexpensive - but I guess I got what I paid for. So, off to the shop again in, oh, 7 1/2 hours to get my money back...

Tonight Rock Band get together was a blast, I so want to play that with a full group....
I've decided to return the motherboard, as no matter what I've done so far, I can't get NIC drivers to work. Incidentally, this 'board's onboard graphics chipset had Shader 3.0 support, so I could at least launch the Bioshock demo, though I was definitely in slideshow city.
MicroCenter, here I come (again).

You need a vocalist? To bad you aren't really in a neaby van, I'd be in!
Singing's my bag... I've beaten expert on vocals and had one of the top scores on the overall solo vocals leaderboard for as long as I was pursuing it. Funny thing is I'm not sure anyone really wants to listen to me actually sing, so that makes this game a blessing for me.
Damn, I finished easy and can't get much into medium w/o running into trouble. Rock Band does not like my vocals at all.
Which sucks, since that makes getting into World Tour Mode that much harder. I basically have to play the guitar and sing, and if I'm not familiar w/ the lyrics, I'm generally hozed...
Tonight Rock Band get together was a blast, as expected. One of the friends is familiar w/ drums in real life, so even with only about 4-5 hours under his belt (from our two get togethers) he's already able to finish songs on Hard mode. I don't know how the hell he does it...hell, he doesn't even own the game or a console.

All I have to say is - holy crap is the ECS (EliteGroup Computing Systems) site slow...
Trying to download latest Realtek drivers for the mobo - the ones on the mobo CD didn't install properly. This might take a little while longer than I expected.
I was hoping to hop into guild wars or HL2 (if the onboard video works well enough) about half an hour ago. Oh yes, I'm beginning to wonder if my ATI card had been nuked during the PSU-fry way back when, as I installed it on this new mobo, with no graphics either onboard or on the card's VGA port...
EDIT: Realtek onboard networking seems to work on the physical level, but the driver will not install properly in XP - the drivers from Realtek's website seem to go through and install fine (even give the option to repair/remove), but nothing new appears in the Network Connections window. I just have my Local Area Connection 2 up there for VPN... bah.
Funny, though - with all these hardware changes, XP didn't ask me to reauthenticate...

wow - fired up Peggle - I guess I am the only one that thinks it is major stupid. Yeah, but I've found that I've increased my score every time over the four or so times that I've played through it, so I'm finding out that there's more skill involved than I first thought there was. Like when you have four pegs to hit with one ball left and are able to get enough free balls to finish out the level.

WoooHooo, way to go Seahawks!
I believe Washington, Jacksonville, New York, and San Diego are going to win. Oh well Cutter, maybe you can go 3-4.
I guess I can't say anything without my own predictions - Seattle (really, I would have picked them!), Jacksonville, Tampa, and San Diego. Although the only one that I would bet on would be the Chargers.

You need a vocalist? To bad you aren't really in a neaby van, I'd be in! Same here! I have a relatively decent voice (or from other people, a great/lovely/good voice), and can probably get away with keyboards... oh right, rock bands don't use keyboards. Well, I can always take along my keyboard controller and fake it.

From my experience, never skimp on the Mobo. Almost always has been the source of problems if my comp stops working (That and video cards). I have a rule where I try to spend about $75 on the mobo, its a good mid range price thats worked for about 5 comps I built in the last few years with no defectives.

WTF, since when is it such a top priority to use DNA evidence to find and convict someone of robbing a kids piggy bank.
Well, just consider that he could've very well just taken the kid instead of the $20 and the crime becomes a little more ominous...In any event, the cops probably knew there would be some media attention and decided to make an example out of him...

Well, I finally broke down and went over to MicroCenter tonight to pick up a Xion 450W power supply, AMD Athlon AM2 socket CPU, an AM2-compatible motherboard (ECS, not my first choice, but it was on sale), and Buffalo memory (1GB, $13.00 after rebate).
I'll be tooling the thing together tonight, hoping my x700 vid card still works... though I can at least work with onboard video (nVidia Quadro-based) if the x700 doesn't.
As long as the system as a whole works...
Gonna be in Live Chat if anyone wants to, um, chat.

EDIT stuff: gah. it's this board:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813135067&Tpk=ecs%2bgeforce6100sm
and I'm seeing this in the specs:
PCI Express x16 - 1 x PCI Express x16 slot (runs in x8 mode)
If this is true, then why have a PCI-E x16 slot at all...?
(Yes, it's v 1.0A..)
more EDIT stuff: Okay, never mind on the x8 concern - a friend of mine mentioned that most (current) video cards don't use the full 16-lane bandwidth, so until the next generation of cards comes out I should be okay. It was a bit confusing when I read that spec, though. I'll let you guys know how I make out with the buildout.

DNA used to solve piggy bank robbery? |

A man has been charged with sneaking into a toddler's bedroom and stealing $20 from a piggy bank while the 2-year-old girl slept. Authorities say DNA evidence linked Ryan A. Mueller, 30, of Sheboygan Falls to the crime that occurred Aug. 10 in Wilson. WTF, since when is it such a top priority to use DNA evidence to find and convict someone of robbing a kids piggy bank. We couldn't even get the cops to take fingerprints after some jewelry was stolen from my mom's house when she was having some work done.
The jewelry that was stolen wasn't expensive, but it was priceless to her because it had been in her family for generations.
