And that extra security (User Access Control) is annoying as hell. I turn it off, but I suppose it's good to have for those who aren't computer savvy.

This is why I switched from Windows 2000 to Ubuntu a few months ago.
From what I experienced, Vista is even worse than XP; slower, 'secure' being an eufimism for just limiting the user.
Ubuntu isn't perfect, hell at some points it outright sucks (drivers, drivers, drivers, also: genome sucks). The thing that keeps me on it, and makes it 50x more comfortable to use than XP or Vista is the fact that it takes the user seriously: you can do anything you want, if you can.

Is there anything besides DX10 Vista really offers? Slightly better security (main user not admin), a better Explorer, and Aero.
That's really about it.

If by fine, you mean, worse than Windows XP, then yes.
I dual boot, XP 32 bit & Vista 32 & 64. Everything runs slower in Vista. And DX10 isn't worth the massive performance hit for a slight visual upgrade. Is there anything besides DX10 Vista really offers?

No - it hints at the death of Vista. ugh. Stupid articles.
XP Pro ftw. You know, I seem to remember people saying "there's no way i'm going to upgrade to XP and it's 5 million lines of code. 98 forever baby!"
XP sucked until SP2. Vista will get there.
note: arguably there's less reason to go from XP to vista than from 98 to XP, but still. Despite piss poor drivers from the video cards back in January, Vista runs fine now. This comment was edited on Jan 3, 09:32. |

broadcasters leeway |

I think folk are in for a shock regarding broadcasters leeway, once the old analogue bandwidth is irrevocably flogged off. So far they have been sending high bit-rate content, but they can always send more channels of low bit-rate content instead. You can imagine their eyes lighting up at the though of more channels of advertising revenue. I have caught the local TV networks trying it on with crappy lego-vision low bit-rate content during Kids TV time, very ugly! Sod giving the broadcasters MORE leeway, what we want is a guaranteed quality of content that they may not go below.

The whole point of the human head demo is to show handling sub-surface light scattering of realisticaly simulated human skin. You've never seen a hot blonde without make-up, though you might think you have if it's well applied ;-)

Good article. Terrible headline.
It got you to read it, didn't it? I'd say the headline worked fine. Yes it did. They are also now on my no-visit list of sites. I should've known better. CNET is the parent company of Gamespot...

If Microsoft died tomorrow this wouldn't be the end of desktops! Complete hyperbole. Good article. Terrible headline.
Actually the headline is valid in a way.
Like it or not, most PCs purchased now-a-days are Windows based. Most new PCs come with Vista. While some companies offer to pick/choose, Joe Sixpack goes for whatever is on sale and looks perty. In other words, even with Dell & company, most new PCs are coming preloaded with Visa. Taken in a specific context...
Slow adoption on a OS that is almost a constant on new PC systems could mean that the market for new PCs is dying down.
A drastic enough slowdown could be viewed as an indicator that a platform is losing its steam in a big way.
Loss of steam could mean: - People are sick of the upgrade game - Eye candy doesn't cut it for them anymore - Maybe they want to try something else: Linux, OS X, etc.

desktop death |

Fine. But that doesn't change the fact that 42.3 percent of Windows OS sales are XP today. Microsoft depends on new license sales to fuel its growth. With a subscription model, it arguably would be OK. But with a huge swath of its user base not injecting new cash into the Microsoft ecosystem? er, the 42.3% thing might be a problem if xp was less profitable per unit than vista. 42.3% drop in overall Os sales, that'd be a problem.
Some Slashdot commentary points out that Vista has a tougher battle ahead of it because it's meant to replace a strong product (XP) when XP replaced a terrible product (ME). and they'd be right, at least in consumer perception. check any forum. nobody is bothering to upgrade because there's no need, and no significant benefits. They cut many of the most interesting bits out, and several of those left are in the expensive versions.
None of which is any problem for the desktop. "The desktop" doesn't suffer from having an OS which, TBFH, has been pretty damn good for a long time. MS might be losing some sales but I'm sure they can handle it, nothing more than preassure for them to realise they have to put more effort in.

i feel sorry for the fools that jump on the Vista boat its sinking fast.[i
More like the boat keeps sailing fine, just every now and then we have to listen to some guy in an older boat pull and and say "LAWL UR SENKIN! UR GONNA GO UNDUR NOW!" and we just have to sigh and say "No, but you do say that every week."
