If Microsoft died tomorrow this wouldn't be the end of desktops! Complete hyperbole. Good article. Terrible headline.
Actually the headline is valid in a way.
Like it or not, most PCs purchased now-a-days are Windows based.
Most new PCs come with Vista.
While some companies offer to pick/choose, Joe Sixpack goes for whatever is on sale and looks perty. In other words, even with Dell & company, most new PCs are coming preloaded with Visa.
Taken in a specific context...
Slow adoption on a OS that is almost a constant on new PC systems could mean that the market for new PCs is dying down.
A drastic enough slowdown could be viewed as an indicator that a platform is losing its steam in a big way.
Loss of steam could mean:
- People are sick of the upgrade game
- Eye candy doesn't cut it for them anymore
- Maybe they want to try something else: Linux, OS X, etc.
