Out of the Blue

Today's a pretty significant anniversary in the PC gaming world, as it was 14 years ago today that the DOOM shareware was initially released, changing many lives forever (certainly mine). That means the release of DOOM predates Kevin Mitnick's arrest, OJ Simpson's acquittal, the release of Windows 95, the announcement (much less the release) of the DVD format, and the deaths of Kurt Cobain and Jerry Garcia. Dakota Fanning was not yet born when the DOOM shareware was released, and other now-dead people who were still alive at the time include Rose Kennedy, Cesar Romero (no relation), Telly Savalas, Jack Kirby, Richard Nixon, Jackie O, Burt Lancaster, Sonny Bono, Jack Lord, Henny Youngman, and Frank Sinatra.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to celebrate by taking some Gertiol and shooting some imps.

Most people never got to experience how incredible the music was in DOOM, you really needed a midi card to make it shine all those ad-lib carry overs on the Sound Blaster sucked but most people didn't know any better.

The only game I didn't turn off the music for was the original Quake. All other game music never did anything for me, and in fact took away from the game experience. The Quake I music made the game more immersive IMO.

Oh and I had a WWII flight sim that had orchestral music that I usually left on low setting while flying.
