GameSpot Editor Fired Over Review?

Primotech reports the firing of Jeff Gerstmann, long-time GameSpot editor, saying sources close to the situation indicate this due to his tepid review of Kane & Lynch: Dead Men for Xbox 360, pointing out Eidos had invested in a prominent advertising campaign on the site. The article points out this Penny Arcade comic offering a typically searing take on the situation, along with another indication this unconfirmed story is making the rounds. A later update on DESTRUCTOID reports the departure of GameSpot editor Tim Tracy though it's not clear if or how this may relate to the situation described above.

Ya, Pirates suck and I used to be one of the biggest and baddest!Thank God I am forgiven!:)Well, anyways I think we want to see drama in everything! How dare Gamespot fire someone!!!!! Gamespot fired him because it would benefit the company! Yes that is what companies do, they fire slackers, bigmouths, losers, people that aren't performing! Bottom line is, there are probably a ton of people that would kill to work for a gaming mag or company like gamespot. Come on, your work is playing games than giving reviews? We do that for free here!:)Don't get me wrong, it would be work but not back breaking work!:)O ya let me drop another bomb.....Companies want to make money just like you, when you work for one. YOu want your paycheck!?:)

Jesus is Lord! If Jesus has no power, why get upset?

Of course if you pirate the game then who the hell cares right? I think most of us buy our games.

You do realize that you can buy a game after you pirate it, right? Why rely on dubious reviews when you can just play the game and see for yourself?

Piracy is one reason games are so expensive.

Incorrect. Console games are harder to pirate than PC games yet console games always cost $10-20 more.

I pirate everything due to poor return policies and zero customer service.

You name any game that came out recently, i had it off the newsgroups.

Bragging? No. Keeping me from losing several hundred dollars in piss poor games with no way of returning them YES!

I went out and bought C0D4, Crysis, Two Worlds, Bioshock and you can thank Razor 1911 all for that. I ditched Quake Wars and Unreal 3 because they suck ass to me.

Piracy rules because people want it for one reason or another. Its here to stay, too fucking bad. Ligthen up on the costs and the return policy and I might play your little game.

Probably not....

Actually wasn't there a CNET guy fired a month or so ago for reviewing or criticizing the Mac OS or Mac related software, and was then rehired a day later?

If you want an example of the 'tail wagging the dog' check out PCGamer's review of Hellgate London. With their Exclusive review of the game, and roughly 5 or 6 pages of it, including an exclusive ingame pet.

Thank god there are reviews like Zero Punctuation around.

You really think the corporate world is honest? LOL!

Who the fuck do you think pays these magazines for advertisements? Publishers etc.

Who generates the largest income, advertisers or magazine buyers?

Influence? No really?

Play the game dude

Here's why reviews exist. You go to a store. You look at a shelf of games. $60 for 360. $60 for PS3. $50 for Wii. $50 for PC. You obviously want to buy the best game. You were interested in Kane & Lynch. You remember that rave review GameSpot gave; awarding it 9.0. So you buy it. You play it. You think it sucks monkey balls. Now you're pissed and out $60 bucks! See my point? Reviewers' help gamers decide the coolest game. This is why being objective and unbiased is so important. Of course if you pirate the game then who the hell cares right? I think most of us buy our games. We rely on honest reviews.

I've been visiting Gamespot for years. I need honest reviews of titles so I can decide whether or not to invest in that particular title. I will never visit Gamespot again.

I have been in the industry too long to know that one person can't make a difference. End of the day, think about what puts food on your dinner plate.

Take them for what they take you. Play the game like they do.

Seriously.

If you want to make a difference, do it on your own time and your own causes.

And your lips probably hurt from the constant puckering exercises you engage upon with that kind of attitude....in this day and age far too many people play the role of kiss ass, and allow for crappy materials to get through to the public. I for one always say what I mean, mean what I say and am respected for my candor. What most people fail to do is to do so in a politically correct manner.

If the game sucked ass, then it sucked ass, there is no way to sugar coat shoddy product so the public will buy it. If it is marketed as a fantastic game, but the reviews say otherwise, then the public will shy away, as they should. Corporate honchos need to realize that one way or another, mistrust of a statement, be it theirs or a "paid reviewer" will affect the bottom line.

What would make you ever trust ANY "critic" who gets paid by a company to review their product?

Eidos doesn't pay reviewers to review their products. CNET pays them because they're employees of GameSpot.

This guy is fucking stupid for having only ONE income stream and then tries to take on the industry and loses that income stream. If he had more than one income stream we could look past this but no.
How did he try to "take on the industry"? Jeff has given reviews in the past that have upset people so this isn't the first time and I don't see how this is taking on the industry. Secondly, I'm sure there are more than a handfull of sites/publications that would be willing to pick him up ... he's not an intern, he was the senior editor for GameSpot for Christ's sake.

Rally the troops! Let's kick some Eidos ass!

I wonder if this is Eidos-driven or GameSpot-driven. I honestly don't know. The Primotech article states,

It is possible that other factors contributed to Gerstmann dismissal in addition to the review, although this is completely unsubstantiated at the present. While we stand behind the information presented here and our source, no official announcement has been made by Gerstmann or Gamespot. Expect more details to emerge online in the next 24 hours.

It would probably be advantageous to hold off for 24 hours.

This makes me trust GameSpot less.

What would make you ever trust ANY "critic" who gets paid by a company to review their product? That's why major sites like Gamespot have never been of any use to me. I always and only look to user reviews - particularly around here.
