That does it for Gamespot |

I will never, ever visit that site again. Never read another one of their reviews. If ad money is that all-important to your site that you will fire long time employees over a poor review for a game with big ads, you're basically nothing but a gigantic whorehouse.
The "review" itself, at such a point, becomes nothing more than another ad. If you actually work under such circumstances and dare to proclaim yourself a game reviewer, and claim that your reviews are legit, you're a fucking cockroach.
I hope Gamespot off within a few months because of this.
Dammit, are there no good game review sites left??

Amen. Jeff ruled. And if the truth of the matter is that Jeff was fired for his review of Kane and Lynch, we need to get this well known by EVERY GAMER, so that Gamespot gives him his job back, makes a public apology, and so forth. Call it consumer action. Democracy in action. I don't care. It's the right thing to do! If I was Jeff I wouldn't work at GameSpot even if they offered a higher salary. I'm sure you understand why.

Friday firing |

Peter Gibbons: You're gonna lay off Samir and Michael? Bob Slydell: Oh yeah, we're gonna bring in some entry-level graduates, farm some work out to Singapore, that's the usual deal. Bob Porter: Standard operating procedure. Peter Gibbons: Do they know this yet? Bob Slydell: No. No, of course not. We find it's always better to fire people on a Friday. Studies have statistically shown that there's less chance of an incident if you do it at the end of the week.

i wish my cat had pyjamas, instead it just walks around naked looking at thing it may be able to eat. Although I like the rather old and outdated expression (more than 'The Cats Ass'), I'd never actually do this to my cat....

Reviews can be usefull for finding out features and gameplay when you don't know much about the game but I think it just comes down to personal preference.
I, like probably many here stopped going to big sites like Gamespy, Gamespot, IGN, etc years ago when they got so huge and commercial. When I scan a list of reviews from Gamerankings I generally ignore most of the sites and just focus on the few that seem to me to be most impartial. (Action Trip, Eurogamers maybe).
Then I come to Bluesnews and do a search on the 'Gold, Demo, and Patches' for the game.
In the end, none of it really helps. A lot of people here thought that Diablo and Oblivion were good and I thought they sucked. I like Quake 4, not great, but I enjoyed it and others thought it sucked as well. Same with Quake Wars, I think it's the cats pyjamas but most probably woudn't agree with me here.
It's really impossible to know unless you play it yourself I guess. Some things are generally agreed upon, like Bioshock, Fallout, Baldurs Gate 2, Deus X, Systemshock, etc. But in the end it's really all up in the air. Someone's trash is another mans treasure.
Unfortunatley, reviews do influence me, but I read quite a few of them before purchasing anything, and I try to get the vibe from sites like this but in the end, you just never know until you play it yourself.

Once in a blue moon I load up IE and go click every ad on this site. Not as often as I should but the thought is there.

You should probably enable ads on Blue's site just so our friendly El Presidente can show the UGO overlords pretty charts with lots of ad hits. Done. I wasn't sure how to do this exactly, but it looks like Tools -> Adblock -> 'Whitelist this whole site' did the trick.
Oh and by the way? Ugh, I hate ads.

1up.com gave 10/10 to the orange box. http://www.1up.com/do/reviewPage?cId=3163694
"DISCLOSURE NOTE: The requisite playtime for our reviews of Half-Life 2: Episode Two and Portal took place at Valve Software's Seattle, WA-based headquarters over a period of three consecutive days. Valve representatives sequestered our reviewer in an office, obligingly honoring requests for no disturbances, as he played both games -- in their entirety -- on a typical PC, custom-built to our very specific requests."
Play testing is done on hardware provided by the publisher, in the publisher's office, with a publisher who probably stops at nothing to please the reviewer (and it's only normal - I'd do the same, trying to be the best host possible, etc.).
The issue here is not the publishers, who just take advantage of the greedy slimeballs that pass as journalists nowadays, but the hacks themselves, who'd sell their own mothers for a free pizza or some lame freebie. (freebies are getting less lame though, it used to be free usb keys now it's free ipods).
I work in this field, trust me, the number of times I've been approached by 'journalists' with emails along the lines of 'hey, i'm about to give you a shit review, but in exchange of this and that, I might change my mind' - it's incredible. Rotten, rotten, rotten.

I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this story. It's just insane of them to fire their best known and most respected editor.
I have no doubt he got half a dozen job offers as soon as the news broke, but still, just disgusting.
That site isn't getting a single more click from me.

Canadian Dollars...sorry, forgot to point that out.
It's not just the dollar amount. Money hasn't changed "that" much in recent years. We were getting games the same price as the US even when our dollar was .10 below.

What this guy should have done, fuck the industry, tell them waht they want to hear and take their money at the end of the month and run to the bank.
Who gives a shit. That's how the rat race works.
This guy is fucking stupid for having only ONE income stream and then tries to take on the industry and loses that income stream. If he had more than one income stream we could look past this but no.
an idealistic point of view would be to applaud the guy for his actions. but sadly, like you pointed out, he took on a fight he cant win. i hope he goes out and starts his own gamesite review that does not answer to companies in the gaming industry just to avoid conflict of interest.

Meh. I knew that Gamespot reviews were bought by advertisers. This simply proves it.
Simple answer. Don't go there.
Not that I have for a very long time anyway.
