The Witcher Patch

The Witcher Official Website now offers a new patch for The Witcher, updating CD Projekt's action/RPG to version 1.1a. The new version corrects a bug in Act 5, and does not impact existing saved games. The 113 MB download is mirrored on Gamer's Hell.

42. UK Retailers Oct 30, 2007, 00:10 Mike Hunt

Mike who did you order it from and what is the ETA?

Golem - I ordered from gameplay.co.uk

I'm not sure when they got stock in but here in Australia it looks like the release date will be either 2nd November or 9th November. Hopefully my order will arrive before the AU street date but I've still got MotB to play through so I'm not too worried.

Well at least now I feel better... I thought they were just toying with my mind. I got the same delay notice and the same shipped noticed tonight. Mine says it was e-mails at 7:16 pm so I hope to see it at my door by Thursday (the latest). If they got it out this afternoon then I should have it by Wednesday. Sweet, I have read a lot of positive comments on other boards concerning the quality of this game.

Strange how great games with above average stories get below 8/10 scores even though the review is mostly praise. Yet a shallow game like Oblivion with all the shiny gets 10/10.

MotB is another one that should have been given higher marks but the media cut it down because of the spirit meter.

No accounting for taste I guess...

I pre-ordered the UK Import version from GoGamer. They just sent me an e-mail tonight (Monday) that it's shipped. They'd sent me an e-mail 2 days ago saying it was delayed until an estimate of 11/2 but I guess they got their shipment in.

Here's the link:

Has anyone ordering from GoGamer gotten their Import yet?

I pre-ordered this thing a while back and it seems they kicked me to the curb.

So I am now wondering should I cancel and order from the UK or wait until next week and hope it shows up?

Anyone who ordered the Import got a URL for us saps in NA?

I wouldn't bother, the animations are poor, the story is bad. It is a very simple RPG, I was hoping for something like Gothic from what they were promicing. The camera angle is horrible it gets in the way.
Combat is total shite, click click click dead, same again no skill involved.
The animations are not poor, I don't know how you can say that. The combat animations are motion captured and they look good.
The camera angle is not poor. There are 3 camera angles and the zoom is modifiable. I like the over the shoulder and use it constantly.
The combat is more than just click click dead, that's not even my opinion it's a fact. The click click dead is the lame ass diablo style combat. This doesn't have the lame ass diablo style combat which is 100% click click click, quick health potion, dead. It's a few steps above that. You can dodge and roll and jump over guys and the attacks are timing based. You have to left click at certain times, to continue a set of moves and the longer you continue the set of moves the more powerful they progressively get. Also there are main types of swords and each has different left click timing combos. Plus there are temporary buffs to your sword that give it special characteristics which are good for fighting certain enemies. I'm playing on medium difficulty.

Bilbo, that's BULLSHIT.

Now, maybe the combat is debatable...I think it's great, what with having to switch styles between group, fast and power to defeat different (numbers of) foes. Add some combat spells and the fact that you need to move around and jump over the enemies to survive oin medium or hard difficulty and I'm having fun.

But what marks your post as BULLSHIT is what you say about the animations. The witcher has some of the best animation I have EVER seen in a game. It's fucking gorgeous. And it's not just me; go check some CG community sites on the net...the professionals (you know, the guys who do this stuff for al iving for film and tv and games) think it's great too.

Heh...most of the time I play in the 3rd person view...but the great thing is that the camera angles are mapped to F1/2/3. I play in F3 and sometimes hit F2 when I walk long distances (just click on terrain).

The only way the combat could be mindnumbing is if you play on easy.
On medium and especially hard, you really need to switch up your combat styles and move around (either just move or dodge/jump over the enemy) to survive. Plus the combat spells are pretty usefull.

I think the combat is loads better than the clickfest which is NWN or Oblivion...timing, combatstyle and positioning all come into play. And with the great animation, it looks great too.

I really don't get that. I get loading times of anywherre between 5 secs (into a small interior) to 12 secs (going back outdoors).

I play on a p4 2.6c, 2gigsoram and a 7800gs512mb. The game runs fluently with everything on high (except FSaa/aa set lower) @ 1280x1024. I do have everything on SATA, with swapfile, OS and game all on a different drive...maybe that's why.

As for the game; it's brilliant. If you liked BG, Fallout or planescape: torment, BUY THIS. The combat is interesting when you get it (change styles on the fly, the upgrades go per hit in the sequence), the game looks great (this is Aurora so heftily modified you won't recognise it!) and there's an actual story, with memorable characters and choices with consequences (oh-so unlike Oblivion).
This is an oldschool rpg in the best sense of the word.

What really gets me is how most reviews of this game seem to be by people who don't like RPG's; there's actual good use of cutscenes ('OMGZ you can't move around in cutscenes!') which pull yuou into the action, there's a main character who needs to play through an interesting story ('OMGZ, the story is confusing [wtf?]'), there's tons of great little features ('ZOMG, the game lacks polish!' [wtfwtf? Not only is the dev team polish, the game is bursting to the seams with great extra's and details]) and the graphics look imo better than Oblivion ('OMGZ teh gfx suck').

Oh i'm all for talking and walking in RPGs. Thats what an RPG is in my book. But for the talking and walking to work brilliantly for me, i have to be engaged enough and immersed enough in the game to not care.

Sad fact is that sometimes i get bored running 3 minutes outside to do a 20 second (sometimes baffling) conversation only to have to run another 3 minutes back to where i was!

I loved games like Planescape, Morrowind, Baldurs Gate etc because they kept me immersed in the game and when i finally got to where i was supposed to be the conversation was almost always excellent and engaging.

Still, this is a pretty good game atm. I dont think it'll touch Mass Effect though in terms of RPGness and conversation, but we'll see.

Be warned though: You will spend 3/4 of your time running around the outside area and talking to people. Probably more running than talking really. Sometimes though when talking to people they talk about something you're supposed to know, but you dont, not only that but most of the time i just felt myself switching off and ignoring the dude/dudette talking.

Nicely put! That's definitely a grand negative point of the game. Hell, I think it's right about he biggest freckin' flaw!

Silly me. Isn't the point of an RPG the fact that you should be talking to people to understand the story and characters? Everyone keeps laboring on this point, but I'm not convinced that it is a bad thing. Look at Planescape, you could play almost the entire game without doing anything...except TALK! And, we all know how much that game sucked.

There's indeed a lot of running around, but I'm fine with that. There are also a few kill creature X and come back, quests.
Sometimes you can't do that quest because you don't have the knowledge about that mob. Every mob has it's own weakness and strength.
You will have to find a book with more info about that mob. The questlog will also tell you that you can only complete the quest when there's an entry in you journal about that monster.

I bought this game on a whim. I agree with some of the stuff people say but ah. Here's a longer winded "review" of the game.

Buying the collectors edition, i flicked through the artwork book as the game was installing. Nothing really caught my eye and made me stop until i flicked past some softcore drawn porn. Wondering why, i left it until i started the game.

Running it on an e6600, 2gb ram, Vista Ultimate and a 8800GTX is fine. I can run it at 1920x1200 everything max... the game even defaulted those settings! Obviously then i have no quams with the slowdowns or graphics problems others here have.

The intro was stupidly long. And i mean stupidly long. It was like a mini-movie in itself which isnt a bad thing necessarily, it's just towards the end i got bored and i started wondering "what the fuck is actually going on?". Average start to the game for sure and when i actually started a new game i swear i just sat back for 15 minutes or so and just watched cutscenes trying to figure out what was going on. Maybe it was just me, i dont know if others had this problem.

In terms of actual gameplay, it's a standard rpg style like Gothic. FP controls arent bad, although sometimes it can be annoying since sometimes your character refuses to start a new attack for no reason until you make him roll to one side or something. It's really wierd. Combat is a bit of a click fest, although it rewards you when you do timed clicking. Do it well enough and your guys does some fancy footwork that can end up in a severed head or something equally gruesome.

Skills tree is a bit weak as well. There isnt really one, just upgrades to your character if you understand the difference. Potions... these guys are a bit problematic. Instead of the standard "this potions gives you x health straight away" the health potions (and every other potion that affects your health/endurance/poison levels) acts slowly. So instead you get a higher regeneration of health, not instant health. I guess it adds forward thinking into fighting, but most of the time i just forgot and got my arse trounced bad.

Bah i'm a bit of a rambler, it's too early in the morning and im sure none of that made much sense.

To sum up: Decent game with a long long play time (claimed 80 hours, probably more 65/70 hours) that looks good if you can run it. Couple of niggling problems, but if you dont mind clicking when attacking enemies and you remember to take your potions, you should enjoy it.

23. My little review Oct 29, 2007, 04:52 Eldaron Imotholin

For me, there are two major flaws.

1. The frequent loading screens (as mentioned before);
2. SO FAR the story. I'm only at chapter 2, but F*CKIN HELL it's soooo boring! Seriously, some occassional assassin's spawn during nighttime - THANK GOD! - and you have to do with those action moments, because furthermore.. you're playing Sherlock Holmes instead of Geralt. Go from point A to point B to talk with a guy to then go to point A again. It's all bla-bla bullshit and not at all interesting, I've been playing CSI for a whole day.. yes, it's that long!

It's because of that second reason I mention - and not any other reason! - that I don't have the urge to play the game anymore. Well, ok.. it's because of both reasons combined, because point A and point B are mostly to be found in interior places... and the distance between point A and point B is to be traversed over the exterior places.

POSITIVE POINTS:

1. Awesome and entertaining combat-system, great finishing moves and great magic;
2. Admitted, extremely SEXY love-cards;
3. Geralt, right about the greatest charismatic character I've ever played;
4. Nice looking engine, and I don't suffer the HDR lighting FPS drop issue;
5. Nice alchemy system and potions;
6. Good character development;
7. Apart from this terrible day I spent CSI'ing, the story is good and not at all lineair;
8. Collect runes and magic stones for weapon upgrades;

Ok, that's that! Sorry I didn't put more time in this message, but, frankly, I don't wanna waste time NOT playing The Witcher, which is a good add to this review

Cheers,
Vince
