"Tribes-like Shooter" Coming?

Shacknews reports learning a "Tribes-like shooter" is in the works at GarageGames, saying the project will be announced in December as one of the games to be launched on their InstantAction web initiative. The story is based on information from "a source close to GarageGames," who says the folks behind the Torque engine are at work on a team-based online shooter. The original Starsiege TRIBES was developed by Dynamix, where many of the folks at GarageGames were formerly employed, and word is there has been a significant increase to the headcount in the garage to accommodate the development load. The report speculates the game will be released some time next year.

I totally agree with everyone's comments here about how cool T1 and T2 were. Its glad to see so many ppl with great memories of the game. Truly, T1 and T2 the gameplay was so rich .. just ridiculous, so I'm all for GG to get a spiritual successor to the greatness that was the first 2 TRIBES games.

but i finally got to the point where i felt like no other MP shooter was coming even close to what i really liked.. and while TV isnt exactly the best step forward for the series, it is the most modern looking and is still fun as shit

if you go online look for me, my screen name is 'Purple Jade Badger'

Right on!! I've seen you around Space Captain, I still play T:V as well under the name Tuffy.

Xeno, there are people still playing Tribes 1 last I checked, which was about a month ago. If you can find the TribesFTW package online (I think TribalWar has it) you can get up and running very quickly.

I`d love to see a complete retro redo of Tribes 1. Gameplay INTACT. But a new engine ala the Unreal 3 engine.

You are partially correct. Probably one of the most important aspect to the game that always gets overlooked by developers is the physics. So much of the nuances in movement, jetting, skiing, carving have become a huge part of Tribes gameplay. Physics ala T1, T2C. (I actually now prefer T2C more).

TV was partially a failure because of the choice of engine (Unreal 2) its limitations and the whacked changes to the feel of movment and skiing because of that choice. Using an Unreal engine for a Tribes game scares me only because past Unreal engines actually did not have very smooth movment such as game engines for Tribes or Quake. Netcode and an engine that can provide a sense of scale are also important.

I hope they release the browser version and then decide to release a richer standalone version that allows for all the modding and scripting. If they do this right, which probably wont happen (sorry its not easy to be positive) it would be a big success like TF2. Valve really understands their fanbase exceptionally well.

I'm torn. I'm somewhat excited but at the same time we've been cock teased over the years, dealt with watching half attempts like halo take all the limelight, dealt with butched up producer changes to the game in predeccessors and now a game that runs in the browser?

Being a Tribes fan is like dealing with a long, painful death. You get to the point to where you want to die, and just when its about over, someone comes back and ressucitates you for more pain and suffering.

Unreal Tech just won't cut it. Tribes isn't Tribes without the client side scripting etc. The engine they use will need the same flexibility as the one used for tribes 1 & 2.

If I had to guess, they'll be using whats left of the Torque Shader Engine.

Oh and I would love it if they implemented a grapple hook similar to the one in Vengeance. The hardcores hated it but I thought it was a great addition to that kind of gameplay.

If this is true, this is the best news I've heard in YEARS!

Starsiege: Tribes is the most memorable game I've ever played. I can easily say it's my number 1.

hmmm - im not holding my breath on this news for a "tribes-LIKE shooter".. unless its pretty carbon copy type stuff, its not going to have the same appeal for me

i would love to see an update to the T1 or 2 type gameplay, with more deployables and base OPs type stuff .. with new updates to ski-physics and jetting, as well as super-solid net code..

the basic formula of jetpacks, skiing, and explosive projectile weapons that require you to lead targets - you cant touch that if you want to retain the tribes soul.. im all for updates and new tech tho

btw, IIRC Torque was used for T2.. not T1

Huh. I feel the strong urge to reinstall Tribes.

i reinstalled TV a month ago and started playing it again.. i quit playing years ago when Irrational dropped support and announced they werent putting out the patch.. but i finally got to the point where i felt like no other MP shooter was coming even close to what i really liked.. and while TV isnt exactly the best step forward for the series, it is the most modern looking and is still fun as shit

However, they're not making this with the Torque engine, are they?

I realize graphics aren't the be all and end all of games, but if it looks like Tribes 1, I'm just going to go somewhere else.

Tribes is one of the few games I've played for years.

Many may disagree with me ( I some don't =)), but I hope they make the exact same game as the original with simply a graphics and sound overhaul and new maps (and yes, include the old ones too).

If I had my way? I`d love to see a complete retro redo of Tribes 1. Gameplay INTACT. But a new engine ala the Unreal 3 engine. Same game exactly, new engine visuals. Be sad as hell if we ever saw a Tribes reapear, and some dumbass dev team decided to impliment BF type crap forced Class gameplay attributes.

Man, I completely agree. Tribes 1/2 are still my absolute favorite shooters by far. If they did a retro remake of either of these w/o trying to mix any new crap into it, just the new engine, etc., I'd be on it in a heartbeat.

Make it happen GG!

That was actually published by Activision...

Apologies. Thanks for the correction.

No apology needed. I just played the hell out of MW, at the time...

"Tribes-like Shooter" = sold

I'll buy that game in a second.

But I admit I know what 3dfiles.com is. I just hope it reaches new generations and we can see a fall to some of this mass produced console run-n-gun crap.

Irrational ruined Tribes!

Not sure if you're serious but Irrational simply did the best with what they were told to do. They weren't prepared for the absolute psychotics that make up TribalWar.com. They got stuck with trying to make the game appeal to the hardcores while allowing new players to pick it up. Ask Bethesda how that shit works out. Their biggest mnistake IMO is that they used Unreal tech rather than build something from the ground up that allowed for player scripting. Otherwise the single player was surprisingly enjoyable and the MP, while it didn't float everyones boat, was fun.

In the end the game should have simply been made strictly for the hardcore players and thats it. Whoever made it would've probably had to accept a loss as the sell-through's would've been low but they could've made it up with liscensing the game for league play and whatnot.
