They've just done a performance review over at Legion Hardware that shows the game is entirely GPU bound - they underclocked a Core 2 Duo to 1.6GHz without any drop in performance. They also managed to apply anti-aliasing and that shows terrible performance. It's ridiculous that the game makes barely any use of the processor while flogging the graphics to death - the engine isn't at all balanced. They write-up also demonstrated that the main difference between UT2k4 and UT3 is the lighting - scale that back and the game looks like its predecessor. The engine is hugely over-hyped and just doesn't deliver.

NEway, I tried it with anti-aliasing and the performance was pretty poor and there was still a lot of shimmering on the floor (even at 8xAA/16xAF) [the method used is not official though and so probably not optimised at all]. That really detracts from the experience. The gameplay is fun and easy to get into but it doesn't seem to have much depth, which was the problem I found with UT2k4.

There's an option calle screen percentage or so in the advanced video. It's a real stupid setting which defaults to 50 (for me). Set it to 100. It's basically a scaling factor for the resolution...if you're running at a res of 1280x1024 and have the resolution scaling at 50, it means it renders the game at 50% of 1280x1024 (so that's 640x512!), plonks that ona screen texture and upscales that texture to run on your used screen resolution.
Even at 1680x1050 with 100% resolution and everything maxed the graphics aren't that great, mainly because of the lack of anti-aliasing - I am so used to having it enabled in every game that it looks positively ugly without it.

However, I was having a blast with the Raptor and the hoverboard today... the gameplay is pretty decent, though it's not better than the original. It's more like Quake 3 now than UT, with the exception of the vehicle mode.

If you set affinity to one core you get more context switches as each thread gets less quanta and therefore LESS performance.

Set affinity to one core. It's a common fix. Surprised you didn't even try that.

Creston, if you liked UT99 you owe it to yourself to try it out.

The hoverboard ROCKS.

I wonder if it's programmed by the modder who created the hoverboard mod for UT2k4?

And thus the game can look ugly (and the midrange texture sert they use inb the demo to keep the filesize down doesn't help either). But if you set scaling to 100, the game looks quite scrumptious...a hell of a lot better than ET:QW, at any rate

Anyway, I'm loving the demo: oldschool UT99 gameplay with this gen graphics...it's what UT2k3/4 SHOULD have been!

118. Not bad. Oct 13, 2007, 20:12 Ant

It's like old UT games. I only played vehicle CTF. Too bad no assault and campaign.

Nice engine and very smooth and fast. I did run into a problem with the uninstall shortcut: "C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{3266FEA9-98E9-448B-B235-DAC63D4CE781}\Setup.exe" doesn't exist. I had to use Add/Remove Programs list method.

I doubt I will get the full game unless it is popular and excellent mods.

I tried out the game again today and decided to play around with graphics settings... it turns out that "Muted" visual style actually makes it look like a normal computer game, rather than the absurd stylings of "vibrant" and even "default" (to a lesser degree). I personally think that muted looks the best of them all.

NEway, searching Google I came across this on Wikipedia: "Tim Sweeney of Epic Games has confirmed that MSAA anti-aliasing with HDR will only be available to players of Unreal Tournament 3 if they are Windows Vista users who also have a DirectX 10 graphics card."

I have Vista AND a DX10 card and I still see no option for anti-aliasing - not only that but forcing it in the nVidia control panel doesn't seem to work either (using the Unreal Tournament 2007 profile). The art direction is alright but I really can't stand games without anti-aliasing - it has been in most games for about 4-5yrs now so there is no excuse. Valve has managed HDR and AA without Vista and it's possible in Oblivion as well (with tweaked settings) so there is no reason that the Unreal 3 Engine, supposedly one of the most advanced, shouldn't. If they fix that then I might actually buy the game but I have a feeling it will get dull pretty quickly, like UT2k4 did.

The demo downloaded perfectly. The demo loaded to the computer. The demo crashed after showing all the companies involved. Deleted from harddrive.

My bad. However still there are so many 1 player servers because they are listen servers.

not enough servers out yet. the ones i do find are laggy. tried the offline game against bots and it is boring. hope for more servers in the following days.
Nobody reads what I say. I want to cry. It's laggy because there are no dedicated servers. Everyone is trying to run a listen server. Did you notice how many "1 person only" on the server there are? That's because people are behind routers and do not have port forward/triggering turned on and are wondering why nobody will play with them.

That in both Gears of War and UT3, that even though the game has loaded all the textures and details haven't loaded completely?

The amount of content that makes up each of these maps is far too big to hold at full detail in RAM/VRAM. Thus, assets are streamed off the hard drive as they're used.

I believe this also simplifies cross-platform development by letting the developer not worry about load times on a console, in addition to allowing things in the future like launching the game from disc without requiring an HD install (or a minimal one)

And I still see no reason for me to download this.

UT was a great game. Much better than Q3, though at the time I'd switch back and forth between them depending on my mood. I think the main difference for me, in all truthfulness, was the stats as well as the dual enforcers. No weapon in Q3 felt very tight. Most weapons in UT felt loose, too. But the Dual Enforcers... I could just sit there popping heads off at long range with those all day long.

UT2K3 sucked.
UT2K4 sucked, but was adored. Never got that. Then again, I thought it was bested by the PC Halo. Sure, single player blew, but sticky bombs and warthogs made for better multiplayer than anything in UT2K4...

Just because you enjoy Citizen Kane doesn't mean you can't enjoy Die Hard.

Die Hard wasn't brainless.

Now, how about The Reaping? That was brainless. Or Van Helsing? Also brainless.

True brainless is absolutely worthless.

Performance wise, this game flies. I have a Pentium D 3.0ghz, 2g of RAM, and a GeForce 8800 GTS and this game is smooth as butter.

I must agree here. 3.3 P4 HT, 2gig DDR2, and a freakin' (I know, I need new card desperately!) Radeon 9800XT...at 800x600, everything else turned up, it runs amazingly well. Even in lower resolutions it looks pretty damn good with some AA on (anisotropic kills my frames dead)...all the fancy shmancy lighting/bloom/blur/bumpmapping effects help to hide that even further.

I was expecting my comp to fail quite epically with Call of Duty 4 and now this but I'm more than happy with my performance in both. I know it's offtopic but can anyone give me a rough approximation of how Portal/TF2/HL2 Ep2 would run? All things considered...I wouldn't want to waste my money on a purchase if it's going to run like dogshit as a new card is out of the question atm.
