UT3 Beta Demo This Month

The Epic Games Forums have word from Epic's Mark Rein to expect a beta demo for Unreal Tournament 3 this month, maybe as early as this week (thanks Gamer's Hell). Word is:

Just wanted to give you a heads' up that we're getting pretty close to releasing the Unreal Tournament 3 Beta Demo for Windows. The Beta Demo will allow instant action play against bots as well as online multiplayer. The purpose of the Beta Demo is to test the game on a large variety of hardware configurations and get gameplay feedback from the community. The development team feels they're pretty close to being ready to release this so it could come out this week but for safety sake I'd say it should be out within two weeks.

We have a few fan sites in tomorrow to play the full game and I'm sure they'll be sharing their comments pretty soon afterward.

Fine with me, because CTF-Bedrooms(Remix) is a great map.

Unreal
Unreal: Return to Na Pali
Unreal Tournament
Unreal 2
Unreal Tournament 2003
Unreal Tournament 2004

Don't forget U2-XMP. I actually got A LOT of fucking enjoyment out of that; literally was Unreal mixed with Tribes with a few unique features of it's own. Odd that XMP was closer to the spirit of Tribes than T:V was. Wonder if it's still populated.

back on topic, I'm really excited for this demo
Seconded. Here's hoping we end up with a bigger player base online after the demo/initial launch rush.

Tribes has much DIFFERENT requirements than Bioshock or SWAT4.

Irrational used Unreal engine because they have 1) gotten a good license deal (pricing decision on the cost of R&D) or 2) overpaid and now have to use if to recoup their costs.

Thank you, I know how the Unreal engine works. But how is that a problem? What other engines don't have the same problem or ones that are even worse?

Oh, and if the Unreal engine limited Irrational when they made Tribes Vengeance, why did they use it again when they made SWAT4, and again (in a later version) for Bioshock?

Are you trying to take over Riley's status as most annoying Blue's poster, or are you actually him in disguise?

Thats why they had to rework networking and other parts of it for T:V, Unreal engine was THAT good. It was a bad choice, hence the reengineering of parts of it and also why they have limited maps due to its mapping engine design for hollowing out of a cube for world generation, ie., its SUBTRACTIVE. Either 1) engineers didnt choose Unreal engine for T:V, it was "management" and licensing etc etc. or 2) Engineers fell for the marketing by Epic...

What killed T:V was it was udder shite (and it had the shitty Unreal engine that they themselves admitteed needed reworking and it was a BAD CHOICE).
So the Unreal engine is shit now? Is that why it made it to three generations (with no signs of stopping)?

If you actually took the effort to look at the number of successful Unreal engine games (which didn't suffer due to the engine, by the way), you'd see that it's one of the most successful engines of the past few years. What basis do you have for calling the engine shitty? Surely all of those developers can't be lazy slobs who will use a bad engine just to make a deadline?

UT3 beta demo, well, Lets hope that it is beta, better than previous UT's, 'cause they were all crap.

In a last ditch attempt to foil the Evil one, I'm sure you will all join with me, and try to head off this hideous, insidious, console infested travesty to gaming at the pass, those of you who can, please get on your knees, those not of able body, please just bow your heads, . . . . .

Let us pray,

Oh loving god, father in Heaven, you know more than we, how this latest planned release to the world of PC games, from the creators of the Unreal Engine, that brought us such gems as UPOO, I mean POO2, I mean POOPOO, I mean . . . . well you know what I mean, (the sequel to Unreal, Unreal 2 for the thick among you ), and UT2003/UT2004, is a blight, a festering sore, an insult to the Intelligence of PC gamers everywhere, please help save us from this travesty to PC Gaming, with it's console infested undertones and overtones, let it stay where it belongs, in the land of the console, and leave our world free from it and it's kind. Oh father please hear our cry for help, and answer our prayers, or at least help those who are weak to be able to withstand the impending release if it must be, and not defile themselves with this filth. Amen.

You may all rise. Thank you, and, carry on.

Tribes could have been successful and different had the problems been fixed through patches or through pre-release testing.

The problem with T:V is that they tried to make it accessible and in doing so, removed much of what made Tribes so great. They streamlined skiing (lessening the amount of control the player has while skiing), they turned healthkits into an instant-use powerup, they added retarded-looking trails to everything, they made asymmetrical bases, they placed a forcefield around the play area, they turned mines into a huge, impossible-not-to-see deployables, they turned base turrets into manual usage, they had bodies drop all their inventory upon death... the list goes on and on.

Jetpacks don't belong in UT, even moreso than all the other vehicles.

Ok, hands up who here wants SKATEBOARDS and who wants JETPACKS?:)

Personally I could care less because I like to care about where my money and time goes.

We want jetpacks, not SKATEBOARDS.

Speak for yourself. YOU want jetpacks.

Personally I could care less, since until I try that demo I'm not buying.

Uhh no

T:V was different and that was wrong. A patch would not fix the WRONG CHOICE OF TECHNOLOGY STACK (Unreal Engine). A patch would not fix the wrong frame of mind they had in mind for the game, being DIFFERENT is what IRRANTIONAL wanted to be. Its not however what we wanted. We screamed and screamed at them but did they listen. NO. They paid for that mistake.

We want jetpacks, not SKATEBOARDS.

You know as much as the rest of us that Unreal Tournament servers end up just hosting 3D bedroom maps. Is that how DIFFERENT you want to be? Humping the vehical spawn point hoping to camp in the BIG VEHICLE? Thts all UT is now.

I bet you liked the Jump pads and low gravity maps on Unreal Tournament. There is that extra dimension of freedom of movement jetpacks give. Skate/hover/boards do not give that.

First USEFUL thing to be modded I bet is a jetpack (whoever does this, please also add a cloak pack, deployables etc etc )

Perhaps we should bring back the Toilet Personal Transportation Vehicle.

I do think JETPACKS comes under the term of "PERSONAL TRANSPORT". Jetpacks WORK; adds that other DIMENSION of freedom of movement which is what we want.

Hoverboards, woopeeee, that right there turns this game to shite in a jelly mould. Whats their next great idea? Springs on Feet?

That's exactly why they didn't add Jetpacks. They needed to add personal transportation that hadn't been done before. Adding jetpacks would instantly get them tagged as a Tribes-clone.

Just because you hate hoverboards doesn't mean everyone else does. I remember being stuck in UT04 without a vehicle, and it really slowed down the game to have to walk to the other node. Hoverboards will fix that.

It would take more than a simple patch to fix what they did wrong in T:V. Period.

Wrong and different are two separate things. Tribes could have been successful and different had the problems been fixed through patches or through pre-release testing.

Bioshock, Crysis, Quake Wars, HL2:Episode 2/Portal/TF2, Gears of War PC, Unreal Tournament 3... it's going to be a good Q4. :-)

Anyway, once this is out all you will find is servers hosting 3d maps of kid's bedrooms as you did the other UT games.

Which could have been fixed or alleviated with patches. However, Vivendi gave them no such support.

I do indeed have ADD, do you normally go around attacking people with disabilities?

Nope, just you.

Yeah they even introduced vehicles (after Tribes), they where being so different there for their gametype.

I'm not talking about vehicles. Everyone under the sun has done vehicles. I'm talking about the personal transportation that would speed gameplay up that hasn't been done in a UT-type game. Jetpacks have been done. Teleporters have been done. Hoverboards haven't.

They went AGAINST all the things that made Tribes what it was. They said they wanted to be DIFFERENT ( go read their constant drivel from their PR dolt we had to listen to on the forums while it was in development ).

Irrantional regret taking on the Tribes contract. So do the rest of us.
