But right now the only option for gamers who already have HL2/EP1 is to a) go and buy the more expensive Orange Box (which makes Valve more money), or b) buy the separate versions through Steam (with increases the profit margin for Valve). It's a win-win situation for Valve. That's simply not true - Gabe said there would be more options available on Steam, so you most certainly won't have to buy them all individually at higher cost.
Actually in the interview Gabe is very vague about it. He claims there might be some bundles and he seems to intentionally avoid the question about ala carte/individual game pricing. He said that they were still deciding what to do but that they would probably have multiple offerings and went on to list a few ideas. He can't announce anything at the moment because it isn't final and there would be a huge fuss if it was to change. You, being the pessimist, obviously turn that into "we're Valve - we're gonna fuck you up the ass" but everyone else reads it and then waits to see what they are going to offer.
No, hence the idea to come up with a box of content worth $50 to consumers. Giving away anything is NOT the reason, and it is only being used as justification by Valve for the $50 price point. For retail they decided to make it simpler by including the other games so that anyone buying it could jump in and catch up with Ep1. The pricing remains to be seen so I will not comment on that.
The box could have been priced lower ($30) with just the three new game/gamettes in it. Valve did it to justify a $50 price point. They wanted people that missed out on Ep1 to buy it so they included it and then put in HL2 and CS:S to make it even more attractive to new users. They could have put out a smaller pack but they decided not to... it's a business - it's their call. If I don't like their policy then I won't buy it. You don't like Valve so obviously you're not going to like it. Heck, if they were to give it away for free then you'd just criticise them for trying to get Steam onto everybody's computer - they cannot possibly win with you.
Several id bundles have been available at retail before including ones which contained all of id's games at the time of the bundle. There are currently none available and I have never seen one that offered all their games going back to Commander Keen - there were lots of Quake / Doom bundles but little else. Obviously that doesn't work very well at retail and so Steam is perfect for that.
Putting all of your games/codes in one Steam account means it is much more likely to be targeted AND it is much more devastating when it happens. Yes, but reclaiming an account is very simple - you either need to take photos with your physical disks / keys along with a note of your Steam username or simply use the card details for items purchased on Steam to prove your identity... both with a few other bits of information for security. Straight-forward. Most people don't type in their password with others around and then leave it to auto-login - most people also don't download shady programs and even if they do they often have anti-virus / anti-malware programs to detect them. The issue is obviously very small otherwise it would have received attention and I would have read about it on many forums.
Plus, Steam forces all users to have that extra crap running in the background whether they want it or not. Oh please, give me a break - iTunes uses more resources when it's not running than Steam when it is. Considering all the functionality it's great, plus the impact is very, very small. If people don't like it then they can use other services or purchase retail copies - however, they often have longer load times because of CD checks and a whole host of other compatibility issues.
Second, game consoles all have media checks, and I don't see those owners decrying them. That's because they don't install games. That's because it's a closed system and they all use very similar protection. That's because they don't have a choice.
First, the retail versions of some games on Steam have no media checks while the Steam versions require online authentication. Some games... true. Consumers are free to pick whichever version they wish. Steam is more convenient for many people (like myself).
At least media checks put the ability to run the game totally in the hands of the buyer and not in some server on the Internet or customer service peon. Not when a new version of Windows comes out that doesn't support the protection scheme. Steam games are updated to support new platforms, whereas old games may not work at all or not without several updates that aren't necessarily easy to find. So Steam offers better support for platforms it supports (currently just Windows) - if that's not good enough then consumers are free to buy the retail version.
Steam is not for everyone. However, for most people it is great. For people with limited internet connections it is not and therefore it is up to them to decide whether it is suitable.
