BioShock Activation Not Permanent

Levine Talks BioShock’s Checkered Launch on Next Generation talks about technical issues, outrage over being mean to the Little Sisters, and the likelihood there will be a BioShock sequel. Meanwhile, Joystiq interviews BioShock's Ken Levine about success and harvesting Little Sisters covers similar topics, and includes the revelation that the reviled SecureROM activation scheme will eventually be going away:
Given the internets and what they are -- with their tubes and all -- I want to sort of talk about the concerns people have. We take the concerns people have very seriously. There's been some concern like, "What happens if it's three years from now, or ten years from now, when I want to play this game. And, you know, Irrational Games has been hit by a meteor?" We will unset the online activation at some point in the future -- we're not talking about when. If people have concern about that they shouldn't be worried about that. This activation is for the early period of the game when it's really hot and there are people really trying to find ways to play the game without buying it. Of course, there are a lot of people who are legitimately trying to play it. We're not trying to be Draconian, we're trying to find a balance.

yeah yeah whatever. I'm sure all 200,000 pirates on the warez board i saw moaning there was no crack are just 'idiots' and 'wrong'. Im sure your buddy who has cracked it was playing it with elvis last night on his moonbase.
The game isn't cracked.

First off, why are you browsing warez boards? I thought you were above that kind of thing.

Secondly, 200,000? That's quite a few pirates there. Is that rounded up or down?

Thirdly, I didn't say the game was cracked. I said it will inevitably be cracked.

I bet most of you people here pay the "GAMER" / "G" / "GAMING" brand TAX on your hardware choices Like G branded Intel CPU's, Logitech/Microsoft Gaming mice with useless weights and fancy knobs and twiddlers, and useless keyboards with lights LOL.

Right. I prefer a heavy mouse, so I find a mouse that's heavy, the G5 which has the "useless" weights. BUT I R SHEEP GAMING TAX ROFLOLOLOL I HAVE NO FUCKING CLUE WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT.

Nobody forces you to be a consumer except yourself. It's called SELF CONTROL, why not take control of YOUR life instead of being a sheep? Then again humans are FLOCK / HERD animals.

It's just a game for fracks sakes. Go broaden your horizons.

Go buy a book instead (not at list price either )

BTW, I always haggle in stores (even ones on Sales, Big chains, small stores, doesn't matter to me )

Sadly, it's coming to that. I've already sworn never to buy another UBI game after Silent Hunter: Wolves of the Pacific. Aside from all the bugs they had to patch, right out of the box, you hit the "A" key at any time, the game crashes....what kind of quality assurance was happening there?! When the paying customer unwittingly takes on the role of beta-tester, enough's enough.

I have an idea. Don't give them your money.

Valve screwed over Irrational by disabling access to my Steam account for using an F word in a support ticket. It also means I cannot give money to Valve for Half Life Episode Two and Portal and Team Fortress 2

Saves me giving them my money

Let the game be a failure until the do ship it without something we all don't like. Let the company destroy themselves for all I care. No point in whinging about it if we hand over our money is there? The only people that do this are pure idiots, especially when they pay a PREMIUM price for being first Sheep to the slaughter

If you really want to get this game, wait until Winter when the weather is bad (no sense in staying in over Summer is there?), the activation will be removed by then and it will also be CHEAPER. Who is the smart ones here really?

The only person they screwed over was themselves LOL.

And speaking of fair use:

I look forward to hearing about the court case in which the defendant tells the plaintiff to go #### himself and wins because the publisher buried the End User Licence Agreement inside the software where the user can't see it until he/she begins the installation, knowing full well that the user is shit-out-of-luck if he disagrees with the License agreement because no stores (at least around here) will even entertain the notion of giving a refund on opened software packages. Where's the "fair" in that?!

Combine that with all the questionable antipiracy practices and the ever increasing habit of knowingly releasing blatantly unfinished, and hence defective, product (I'm not talking about hardware issues, but obvious game-destroying bugginess) and I've never seen an industry so in need of regulation and policing coz it seems they can do whatever the hell they want with complete impunity.

Actually it has been ruled years ago that VCR's are legal under fair use.

Cant say it simpler as this. If you don't like it, dont give them your money. Best way to get them to disappear. Make them bankrupt by not giving them money.

Clear enough?

The less money they get, the more chance they won't do this again. If we are really good at this, the company will dissolve and disappear.

But no, cue the SHEEPLE erm, CONSUMERS.

Do you like paying 200 dollars for jeans with a label on them considering the same cut and wash is made in the same factory for other cheaper brands.

I suggest you read "NO LOGO" book and wise up.

Coca cola and Levis love people like you Gullable.

Nobody FORCES you to give them your money. Only yourselves.

What do you mean by "internal" release, and how do you figure any copy out there that you don't know about must naturally be "internal"? Are you just guessing this or do you know someone who's gotten the version that's out there and surmised as much?

And I don't think I'm "leet" in any sense of the word. It's just a known fact that the p2p networks are not where all this stuff usually gets posted first. The p2p networks are where it eventually ends up once someone has leeched it and uploaded to their favorite p2p. I'm not "leet", but sure as hell nobody who is "leet" bothers with limewire or bit-torrent. I only know this because it took me about 10 minutes to learn it while researching the best way to get TV episodes when the reception craps out in the middle of my scheduled recordings. The 6.1Gb download has been there since yesterday (or earlier...I only checked yesterday). I DO NOT condone piracy, and I own every bit of software on my HD. But I still take great pleasure in seeing the anti-piracy schemes we have to tolerate getting bypassed like clockwork. The fancier the scheme, the more guaranteed it is that there's a cracked version coming soon.

Edit: Oh, and if anyone wants to point out that I'm a pirate coz I've downloaded tv episodes...whatever. Techinically using a VCR, or more modernly, a PVR and burning an episode to a dvd is piracy too...they want to come after me for downloading something that's already been broadcast over the air, let 'em. Not that I ever keep them; I never watch the same episode twice anyways.

Jeez. some of you blathering idiots don't fucking read too well do ya?! Let me try again: THE GAME IS ALEADY PIRATED AND DOWNLOADABLE FROM THE INTERNET!!!

Anyone with a clue and an internet connection can find it. Those noobie tools who use limewire or bit-torrent don't have a clue...at least not yet.

"activation.not.working.not.compressed"

Of course there may be an INTERNAL release floating around, but it's internal, we wouldn't know about it. I'm sure you will though, what with your leet connections above all them BT using newbies.

fine, but that doesn't entitle you to pirate it and never will.

Entitlement is a matter of legality. Obviously piracy is illegal and nobody has claimed otherwise.

It seems like DRM has got strong enough now that the pirates can't beat it, despite all their childlike whining.

Give it a week. All protection schemes inevitably fall. As for whining, who's been whining? The only complaints I've seen are from people who bought the game and found out all the limitations and irritations that the copy-protection brought with it.

Maybe not all of them but to claim that piracy doesn't hurt publishers and developers just shows to me that the person is only trying to justify their crimes.

Nobody is arguing that piracy doesn't hurt publishers and developers. The debate is over the degree of that pain and whether or not it is warranted in many cases.

The way I look at it is that developing software is long, hard and time consuming and those that create it should be paid for it.

Having been involved in game development myself (and working overtime, often double-time, almost every day), I'm all too aware of the time and effort that goes into a game. Unfortunately, it's not the effort that counts but the result. A developer can spend every waking moment working on a game but if it sucks, it's all for naught.

Developers that create good games get my money. However, I determine whether or not the games are good. And if a game's protection scheme prevents me from doing so, the game won't get my money.
