2K Games
Announces BioShock Now Available has word that Irrational Games'
first-person shooter is now available in stores for PC and Xbox 360. The game's
playable demo was released last night ( story), and here's the
announcement: New York, NY - August 21, 2007 - 2K Games, a publishing
label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO), announced today
that BioShock is now available in North America for Xbox 360™ video game and
entertainment system from Microsoft and Games for Windows®, and will be
available in Europe beginning August 24. Developed by 2K Boston and 2K
Australia, BioShock is a "genetically enhanced" first-person shooter that lets
players do things never before possible in the genre.
Gamers enter the game as a castaway in Rapture, an underwater utopia torn apart
by civil war. Caught between powerful forces and hunted down by genetically
modified "splicers" and deadly security systems, players have to come to grips
with a deadly, mysterious world filled with powerful technology and fascinating
characters. No encounter ever plays out the same and no two gamers will play
BioShock the same way.
"With the release of BioShock, we are redefining the shooter experience by
providing players with the freedom to decide how to proceed and which actions to
take," said Christoph Hartmann, President of 2K. "The teams at 2K Boston and 2K
Australia have captured the essence of this underwater world and brought it to
vivid life in the art design and open-ended storyline. Welcome to Rapture."
In the decaying art deco underwater city of Rapture, players can turn everything
they encounter into a weapon, biologically modify their body with plasmids, hack
devices and security systems, upgrade weapons, craft new ammo variants, and
experiment with different battle techniques.
"The development team has been working on BioShock for years to push the limits
in every way possible, so we are excited for gamers to finally experience
BioShock as we've always imagined it," said Ken Levine, President and Creative
Director of 2K Boston. "We delivered on our promise of bringing gamers a unique
and enriching first-person shooter experience that not only challenges their
capacity to adapt and survive, but tests their values and commitment to the
inhabitants of Rapture."

In the demo I had to run it in DX9 mode, DX10 was acting all wonky. I couldn't alt-tab, the mouse highlighted stuff about 2 inches above and to the left of the cursor, and V-Sync wouldn't work.
In DX9 mode everything was great triple buffering was even in effect. With V-Sync the FPS, were steady between 30-60 usually in the 40's. This is with a 8800GTX and the beta drivers.
On the widescreen issue: The reason it's a big deal is it's something VERY simple to fix and yet add a lot to the enjoyment of playing a game.

Anyone who's played the demo's, and gets the full game care to see if they 'fixed' some of the water effects? Namely the backside of water spouts/waterfalls, and the water texture line next to the statue in the water in the '1959' room next to the first tape you get? Thanks.

A new surprise: http://kotaku.com/gaming/shortscreened/bioshocks-widescreen-pissing-people-off-291697.php It's not that big of a deal actually (assuming it's even true). I've played several "widescreen in name only" games on my 16:10 monitor, and it's not all that noticeable. True, games like HL2 that support true widescreen are ideal, but this is acceptable. But it would be nice if they addressed this issue with a patch, to let us widescreen users enjoy the game in its full glory.

Yes, I've tried the PC demo and the 360 demo. The demos were identical as far as content and both were looked equally as good. I'm going with the 360 version for the same reason -- play it on the big screen.
Either way you can't go wrong.

Sadly the demo ran like crap on my system 15-20 fps is my guess. Gonna have to wait till I get my new system in a month or two.
Till then, I finally started playing Dark Messiah...getting kills is this game is very satisfying!

Not until I get myself a decent (but hopefully inexpensive) PCI-E card that has SM3.0 support... any recs, nin I can tell you what I bought, but it wasn't cheap.
Core 2 Quad @ 2.4ghz 4 gig of ram 8800GTX w/ 768 meg of ram
THAT runs it nicely, let me tell ya!

Halo3 is so going to destroy this game! Perhaps, if they add:
A plot More than one level
Thankfully the PC has a whole host of better games coming out, like Crysis, UT3 and TF2.

Okay, once and for all, to save me some sanity... Does 2K Games publish this or Take 2? Even Wikipedia can't seem to make up its mind... Ahh, to answer my own question: 2K Games is a subsidiary of Take 2. Isn't it ridiculous? Normally, you'd think a company would want to go with the strength of a recognized, respected name. In this case, that would be the name Irrational. Instead, in typical corporate fashion to absorb success, they wash away the respected, recognized name, and rebrand the existing success and talent as being part of their family.
