All right, I bought Nightfall. It's currently installing. I managed to find it for $35 at Circuit City ($50 everywhere else), so thought "what the hell".

Just so you know, you can go to Gamestop and put down $5 to preorder and still get the special little preorder box with all the goodies in it, as well as access to the sneak preview event.

The problem is, each has their own major advantage, so picking one isnt easy.

If you want heros then you need C1:E1 or C3, if you want Alliance battles or PvEvP you need C2, and if you want a tyria, and lets face it... its the best, then you need C1.

I love Factions - it's gets slightly dull in the middle (and has some pretty appalling voice acting) but then picks up again. I own all three but it's Factions that I'm playing the most at the moment. Prophecies is great but quite slow in comparison to the other two. Nightfall is probably the best overall, largely due to the addition of Heroes, a compelling storyline and two great new classes (Dervish and Paragon).

They're all very different games. One great thing is if you own Nightfall you can transfer Heroes from there into the other chapters. The stories don't have to be played in any order so you don't miss anything by starting with Nightfall.

I'd pass on Factions, too, if you're just starting. Go for the original or NF.

Solo can be done, but on a few missions, you will need humans.

Does Nightfall have more varied environments than Prophecies, or the other way around? I too have had the urge to buy the game on and off since the factions free weekend . . . where I stayed up till 4am making characters :D.

Yeah, actually...unless you have a really powerful invici monk or something similar that your buddy is playing as...uh, the NPCs are wayyyyyy better.

You will need to pay someone to get to certain areas (there are parts of the game that are 99.9% impossible) but for the most part the game can be played alone.

If you want to use NPCs, then get Nightfall - as all 3 have NPCs, but Nightfall has Heroes, which are NPCs that you can level up and build and talor to your own playing style, thus creating an elite group of NPCs...whereas the regular NPCs top out on ability and kinda suc (other than healing).

Others will chime in that know more......

I'd say go for Prophecies or Nightfall, pass on Factions as a first outing. You have the NPC party members you can use, but in reality they're crap. For a while you'll be able to get away using them (til about level 12) but after that you will need real life support. And you should never solo Missions, those are best done with a full party of humans

Must.. resist.. temptation to buy Guild Wars.. I thought "Oh, Guild Wars 2 is coming. Now I won't lust after Guild Wars 1 anymore." .. then I watched the video, and the lusting has begun again.

Since I don't own any of GW, I don't think I can afford all the expansions. I know they all have tutorials and starter levels. What's a good one to try? And is it possible to solo in this game? I know you can hire NPCs.. does that work out fairly well?

I know - but you get the extra content....ugh. I am torn. I think I will order both. I really like the boxes, maps, booklets, etc....seriously. I have issues.

I will probably end up with 2 copies.

Well, I preordered it as soon as it was available so I'm ready for it... I'll end up buying the expansion proper from Play so that I'll get the box and CD. Not only that but the prices on the official store are absurd - 3 times the cost of the game from online retailers is extremely steep, especially when you don't even get any physical media.
