Steam
News announces that a huge portion of id Software's back catalog is now
available via Steam: QUAKECON 2007-MESQUITE, TX-AUGUST 3, 2007-id
Software has teamed with Valve to bring some of the most successful game
franchises in history to Steam, a leading platform for the delivery and
management of PC games and digital content with over 13 million accounts around
the world.
Starting today, Steam users may download full versions of these best-selling and
critically-acclaimed games, including the complete DOOM series and QUAKE I -
III, including mission packs, as well as id's pioneering PC side-scroller,
Commander Keen and vintage favorites Wolfenstein 3D, Spear of Destiny, Heretic,
and HeXen. As part of the id Welcome Celebration on Steam, select id packages
are being offered with a 10%, limited-time discount.
"Valve pioneered digital delivery of video games with Steam," said Todd
Hollenshead, CEO of id Software. "As a game developer themselves, Valve
understands what developers and game players want and need in an online
distribution system, and Steam delivers."
"We can't overstate our admiration for id, its games, and the technical
advancements the company has delivered to help move the industry forward during
the past 15 years," said Gabe Newell, co-founder and president of Valve. "Like
many other studios, Valve was born when we licensed the QUAKE engine to build
our first game. We're proud to welcome id to Steam and give people around the
world an easy way to play the games that have inspired everyone here at Valve."

The industry as a whole does a terrible job of making its older titles available for sale at retail and keeping them available as compared to the movie and music industries. A lot of these games would not be playable to buy them off the shelf today. The average person is not going to spend the time to figure out how to get the Dos games to run. Backwards compatibility isn't really a problem with the music and movie industry. They came ready to run upon download...which incidentally id is under fire for not following the EULA for DosBox and gave no credit.
If Valve was delivering the full contents of the retail releases of those games including CD keys, music tracks, and no requirement to run Steam to run the games, then I would be the first one to say that bundle is a good deal. Ok get it through your thick skull...this is not Valve's releases...it is Activision's (in cooperation with id, Raven and Ritual)! Valve is only providing the distribution service, they do not decide what gets released and what doesn't.
I really couldn't give a fuck about the CD audio and music tracks, and I don't think most people do either. 99% of the time the first thing I do when I start a new game is turn off the music and usually listen to my own music. Requirement is an old argument and I'm not going to get into it.
There is no legitimate reason why Steam can't offer the full, unencumbered version of games on its service. There is that thick skull again, Steam can (and does)...publisher decided it's not going to...Activision, not Valve.
You must have one unusually fast internet connection if you downloaded multiple gigabytes of data in only one hour. I can get up to 1200 kb/sec down, and It's not unusual at all. Maybe you just live somewhere where they have slow service.
May I suggest you put some of your energy towards bitching at your local ISP for better speeds instead of looking for reasons to bash Valve where there is none (see Activision & id).
