Ditto.
Where we live the well water tastes much better than city water. I have friends who live in town that say the water from our well reminded them of how bad their water really tastes. The well water is actually on par with most bottled waters.

I make no claims about its purity, but clearly they do something to affect the overall taste. That's my point also. I'm not about to claim bottled water is better for you, but there is a definite difference in the taste.
I'll put it this way: Our water is so bad (tasting), the mayor went on TV a few years ago and, to "prove" it was safe to drink, drinks a glass of water at a news conference, as people watched.
I'm dead serious.

I can only imagine what chemically pure water tastes like ... Oddly enough, chemically pure water is not that great for you. And even super chemistry lab deionized water is not that great for you, either.
Most biochemist and biologist seem to think that if somebody only drank actually pure water, in a few weeks time they would develop a server electrolyte deficiency.
I am sure it would be possible to makeup for that by altering the diet. However, it would be very easy with eating specific food for the purpose of more electrolytes to over do it and cause your kidneys to do extra work.

I posted a lot and there are stories to share, but I need to get something to eat and return some phone calls...as this is VERY close to my house and cell service is difficult right now, a lot of people are wondering if I am ok, as we use the road all the time.
Thanks for the update Bats. I didn't hear about it until about midnight (Eastern) last night and thought of you right away. Those involved are VERY fortunate as this clearly could have been a LOT worse.

I am not a big water drinker, but even when I do drink the stuff, I have found Dasani to be the best tasting. I make no claims about its purity, but clearly they do something to affect the overall taste.
I moved awhile back and the refrigerator here has a built ice maker. It's only an ice cube, right? Just needs to cool down my drink? I thought nothing of it when I put some cubes in my drink, but I ended up tossing my drink down the sink because the cubes, themselves, were so nasty (I mean, come on, they had a distinct flavor.) And it was not the refrigerator - the tap water from the kitchen sink tastes funny, too.
So we have city water and an automatic ice maker, yet we purchase bottled water and I make a trip to buy ice from the local 7-11 every week or two.
Do I think the water here will killl me? No. Do I think it is safe to drink? Sure. Will I drink it? Do I want to? Not while it tastes funny, reminding me of what was in the water before I tried consuming it... And again, I do *not* drink much water. /duh, Ray

The other day I brought a couple of bottles of water (Arrowhead spring water) with me on a trip to a museum, but as it was a hot day I drank it all up halfway through the trip. I didn't want to buy the gift shop's absurdly overpriced water, so I figured I'd just fill my bottles up at the drinking fountain. Unfortunately it was one of those fountains where the water barely trickles out, so I headed into the bathroom and filled the bottles at the sink. Luckily I was outside when I went to take a sip, as I was literally forced to spit it out on the sidewalk, it was so foul.
That's why I drink bottled water. At home, I don't mind the tap water as long as it's filtered. But there's no telling what the water will be like wherever I'm at when I'm out. Occasionally it's good but usually it's pretty bad. I could care less how "pure" and "healthy" the tap water is, if it tastes terrible.
I honestly think that most people who ridicule bottled water are not water drinkers. Or else their taste buds are shot.

Thanks for the info - - I find all this fascinating! I had a chance to drink some deionized water in college, and it tasted like distilled water - - kind of "flat". I can only imagine what chemically pure water tastes like ...

Is this what's known as "deionized" water? I mean, pure H2O is just that, and doesn't the deionization process make, essentially, pure H2O? No. Not even close. Ion's are positively and negatively charged molecules or atoms. Deionization takes place on an Ion Exchange Resin, typically. Not all Ions you are trying to remove from the water bind to a specific Ion Exchange resin. It takes different types of Ion Exchange to remove different Ions of all types (from different charges to different sizes, etc).
Furthermore, not all things in your water are Ions. Most biologically active organisms in the water (bacteria and such) are not Ions, and are not effected at all by deionization.
Ion Exchange Resigns can also catalyze the reaction of fairly benign organic compounds in the water to much more harmful ones.
If you are stuck on a island and given the choice between a device to deionize the water or distill it, take the distillation device. Either one will miss a lot of crap, but the distillation is more likely to remove the nasty organisms that will kill you or make you sick. And distillation can remove some Ions as well. Both combined can not remove everything from the water either. Plus, with the distillation device you can maybe find something to make alcohol with!
Making pure water is freakin' hard. It also requires super special containers as well, as everything you own that can hold water will contaminate it; big time.
It is rare as a chemist that we use the super ultra pure water. Filtered, Chemical Lab deionization (multiple types of Ion Exchange Resign) and distilled is usually enough. And this simple stuff is thousands of times more pure then anybody not in a chemistry lab will ever encounter.
*note* Home devices like a Brita filter system are a combination of charcoal filters (filtration, removing things based on size) and simple deionization.

Wow, not really something you can just slosh into your Camelback and go about your merry way. Yeah. I drunk down a whole cup at once. Everybody was staring at me in shock. They then told me how much it cost. I wanted to get on my hands and knees and beg them to not make me pay for it. They did not.

And bottled water does NOT taste better than all tap water. My local water treatment plant pumps some damn fine H20.
Wish I could say the same. My local tap water is among the worst I've ever had.

I just got home from the scene....we were north of MPLS when it happened and flew down the road (followed 2 troopers at about 85-90 mph) to get there as a call went out for all first responders in the area.
By the time we arrived (jumped into a service vehicle at a checkpoint that had guys on site that were involved) they had more help than they could handle, it took over an hour just to get everyone organized. I tended to two individuals with non life threatening injuries until they could free up an ambulance to pick them up.
There wasn't much for me to do after that, so I checked in and got out of the way so they could continue the searches in the water and the rubble.
Talking with all of the construction people in the area and the two that I was tending to, they only couldn't account for one guy that was on a machine that was crushed by a water tanker and pulled underwater and another piece of the bridge then slid on top of the section the guy was on.
Secret service was there pretty quick to talk to everyone that was involved. FBI was also showing up when I was leaving.
A great kudos goes to all of the responders, they showed up from all over the place and it was a great thing to see. They actually had TOO MANY responders, but it is always a good feeling to see that and see familiar faces from all over the metro.
I posted a lot and there are stories to share, but I need to get something to eat and return some phone calls...as this is VERY close to my house and cell service is difficult right now, a lot of people are wondering if I am ok, as we use the road all the time.

...and having access to actually chemically pure water, you have no clue what real water taste like... You just "taste" texture, motion and temperature. It is freakin' great. It also cost about $1000 per gallon to make this stuff. Wow, not really something you can just slosh into your Camelback and go about your merry way.
As for bottled water, I'm hardly picky, except for price. Though I really do dislike most flavored water. When I was in grade school I'd get headaches from bubble-gum and raspberry flavored Hi-C, and similar flavors cause a kind of gag reflex I've associated with it.

And bottled water does NOT taste better than all tap water. My local water treatment plant pumps some damn fine H20. Wish I could say the same. My local tap water is among the worst I've ever had. Using ice cubes made from it produces a very noticeable bitter taste in most drinks, and the water leaves behind white mineral spotting after it dries. In fact, the water is so hard it was recently asked to star in pr0n.

Alright, Google has failed me (or maybe just my Google skillz) so here I am with my problem.
I picked up FEAR Gold the other day and just finished playing through FEAR. Fired up the Extraction Point expansion (stupid 1280*960 res limit, but nevermind that) only to find out that my keyboard doesn't quite work. Esc, F keys and arrow keys all work, but none of the other keys do anything. I find it rather frustrating....especially since I know it works with the Extraction Point demo. Ugh. It's a Logitech G15, any ideas are welcome. I'm going to do a reinstall right now and see what I get.
Edit: It works on the initial launch after an install, and dies after that. *sigh* I dont' think I'll be playing it... --- Xfire: GreySpire http://www.pclinuxos.com http://www.sabayonlinux.org This comment was edited on Aug 1, 19:20. |
