I haven't dabbled with Linux for awhile but my hackintosh plays Wolf:ET just fine. And what about Freespace 2? What kind of list was that?

crysis?

Ah, yep I keep forgetting that thats due out this fall. But we're now up to just one quality PC-exclusive FPS released this year. I think my point still stands that while the PC is far and away the superior platform for shooters, there's only a handful of PC-exclusive shooters being made anymore.

"Yes, but very few PC specific first-person shooters are even being made anymore. Most are cross-platform or ports of console shooters. Come to think of it, have there even been any PC exclusives released or to be released this year? I can't sure can't think of one."

But, most fps games do not work well on a console due control limitations.

What's more there is very little gaming on Windows that can't be had on a console. Can MMO's really maintain Windows gaming and the atendant hardware market?

Your kidding right? Console games have there merits for sports, racing, and console minded shooters (i.e. Splinter Cell). But, most fps games do not work well on a console due control limitations. And, RPGs are also sluggish on a console. Let's not forget the whole mod capabilities that are possible on a PC and not on a console.

Very little difference?!?!? I beg to differ, there is a striking difference.

Don't blame Linux, blame the publishers for not supporting Linux.

There aren't enough Linux gamers, especially paying ones, to make porting a big-budget game profitable.

You'll have to live with dual-booting Windows. I'm not going to suggest buying a console because console games suck.

I'm still waiting for a list of REAL games that play on Linux. That list was, in a word, pathetic.

Cedega from Trans Gaming makes up for a large portion of WINE's shortcomings. The problem is, you have to pay for it, to the tune of $5.50 per month, if you want anything resembling support. Gaming on Linux is still just a dream and will remain that way until publishers pay for Linux versions of games to be developed, just as they pay for console ports and Windows ports now. Don't blame Linux, blame the publishers for not supporting Linux.

Theres no problem with Linux just not enough market share to make any money becuase M$ still runs on something like 95% of all desktops.

4. Linux Gaming? Jul 28, 2007, 18:57 Toebot

Don't make me laugh. Outside of games that run under Wine, there is no gaming on Linux. What's more, the geeks don't really want Linux to be any more accessible or usable than it already is. And even if it were a viable gaming platform, Microsoft would have yet another reason to fabricate more patent infringement claims. Can MS really afford to lose the last good reason to use it's operating systems? Aside from gaming there is nothing that can't be done just as well on a Mac or Linux box. What's more there is very little gaming on Windows that can't be had on a console. Can MMO's really maintain Windows gaming and the atendant hardware market?

A) No more than Windows, IMO.

B) Distributions can be quite different, but the core stuff is the same across almost all of them. As far as I know UT2004 will run on most distros, anything built in a similar manner should have the same flexibility.

C)

Linux gfx drivers are awful

That's on the manufacturer, not Linux. Nvidia has a pretty good driver, ATI continues to have fits providing a driver that can even do desktop compositing well.

due to the heavily restrictive nature of some linux licences some drivers are not included in dists and have to be installed by the user, assuming said drivers even exist.

Funny, I install far more drivers for Windows than I ever have had to with any Linux distro. And as for what's included in the distro, well, that's up to the people putting that distribution out. If they wish to restrict themselves to software with certain licensing, that's their call and not the fault of hardware manufacturers. The beauty of it is that if a distro doesn't have what you want you can simply switch to another.

After reading that list of seventeen unheard of amazing games, I am totally uninstalling XP and going pure Linux.

SCREW BIOSHOCK! TrueCombat: Elite totally p\/\/nz it.
That really was a sad list. There are much better free games.
Not denying you can game on Linux; asserting good gaming is on Windows,
Ray

Problem with Linux and games is A) the platform changes radically from time to time removing any certainty from what the expect from the OS B) Each linux dist can be quite different from the other and with many doing custom dists for themselves support is almost impossible C) Linux gfx drivers are awful and due to the heavily restrictive nature of some linux licences some drivers are not included in dists and have to be installed by the user, assuming said drivers even exist.
