Out of the Blue

The first couple of Wing Commander games (and expansions) are still among my absolute favorite gaming experiences of all time (hence the BlueHair thing), so I have been eagerly looking forward to Wing Commander Arena for XBLA since it was announced. Now if I paid more attention to console doings like that I'd have known the deal already, but I was shocked (shocked I say!) to learn this is a third-person space combat game, even though all the prior Wing Commander games were first-person, in spite of the series launching a full 17 years ago. Not only is it third-person, but it's basically 2D, offering simple loop-de-loops as a variation from combat that takes place on a horizontal plane that even includes obstacles that cannot be flown over or under, making it far more of a multiplayer Zaxxon with Wing Commander spacecraft. Now that having all been said, I have to say that my initial impression is the game is quite fun, and I look forward to playing around with it some more. However, it does nothing to satisfy my passion for a true multiplayer Wing Commander experience, with first-person combat in 3D space, and it saddens me that this game, which could have been released under any title, diminishes the prospects of a true WC1/WC2-style game.

35. Wing Commander Armada LIVE please! Jul 26, 2007, 19:41 Charlie_Six

I think the perfect Wing Commander game for Xbox Live would be Wing Commander Armada. Build fleets, take over planets, engage in dogfights with other players. Sweetness.

I'm 99% sure Shadow does not run faster on the PS3. Shame, too, that game at a silky smooth frame rate would be pure bliss. I wish they'd just remake Shadow for the PS3. I wouldn't complain at all

The targeting system was weak, and I've yet to save the convoy, no matter what ships I attack or what I do. I managed otherwise with the controls, but the allied AI aggravated me. I swear, if I didn't kill an enemy myself, it wasn't getting killed.

There is a demo up on xbox live for you to check out before you buy it as well.

And holy shit, did I hate the controls on that demo...

30. My new name! Jul 26, 2007, 18:52 Enahs

Ok, so today while having lunch with some friends, some radio talk show was on. Somebody called in, but the person had some seriously strange accent going on. As an example, Atlanta become at-land-er. But my favorite, they tried to say "wanton evil"; but no lie they said "wonton evil"; Just like the Asian food wonton. So freakin' brilliant!

I have not decided if I want to start using "Wonton Evil" as my nickname or start up a web-comic with the main character as a villain called "Wonton Evil". Or maybe a band.

This is just so brilliant that I feel I must use it! Plus the only hits at google on the internet for "Wonton Evil" are just a few typos/misspellings.

So opinions.

Name or Comic Strip? I have no musical talent, so if it is a band it will have to involve Dan doing all the music related stuff (and anybody else that has talent). I will just be the creator/producer/guy that gets most of the money.

You have to admit, that is the most brilliant pairing of two words in the history of the world.

Shadow of the Colossus play smoother on the PS3?

I never played it on the PS2 - just PS3 - but it definitely chunked out occasionally. This may be because the PS3 has PS2 parts inside doing some of the work. It might work better on the newer machines that are 100% software emulation.

Blue, if you are looking for a good wing commander-like game, try project sylpheed on the xbox360. It is much the same gameplay as the older WC games, with some small framework of a story built around it. There is a demo up on xbox live for you to check out before you buy it as well.

I thought that Wing Commander game was awful. Strafing hardly works, so it was mostly hovering in one place and shooting enemies doing the same thing. Low action, low strategy, low excitement.

A game like that at least needs circle strafing so you have an incentive to move while firing.

Anyone have an educated opinion of Radiant Barrier? Sprayed on or layout?

Our builder used roof sheeting with a built-in radiant barrier for our new house - he says he notices a big difference in the summer when he's under the roof (without vs with) - stays noticably cooler. He's a straight shooter, so I'd take his word for it.

But that is all I have to go on, no before/after story like you might be able to provide.

Anyone have an educated opinion of Radiant Barrier? Sprayed on or layout? We're having someone come out tomorrow and give us an estimate on the spray stuff, but a buddy of mine who's had some experience with this says it's a load of crap. Before i dump 2k, i need as many experienced opinions on whether this is real or just a snake oil.

and sorry, i didnt mean to hijack the discussion. I love god of war (both actually) and always wondered about collosus.

If you liked Wing Commander, have you tried Freespace 2? I'd vote it as the best space combat sim of all time. With all the fan-made improvements to graphics and such it still looks quite modern.

Can't go wrong with the GTA series.
I am having a lot of fun with used Burnout games.
Kingdom of Hearts I & II.

There is 3-6 months of gaming just in that for less than $100.00!!!

I'm sure there are some others, but those would be top of my list for sure.

Didn't get to play the Ace Combat series on the PS2 (only the original PS and PSP, and now the 360) but I've been a fan of the series.

Also, I've always like the Soul Calibur/Tekken series...

Question, does Shadow of the Colossus play smoother on the PS3?

And don't forget Kingdom Hearts 1&2, and the Final Fantasy RPG's.

what are the "must have" titles for the PS2?

Every time I see a used one for sale, I'm really tempted to pick one up along with:

Okami
God of War I & II
Shadow of The Colossus

I'm sure there are some others, but those would be top of my list for sure.

16. Speaking of consoles Jul 26, 2007, 14:46 JM

I just bought a PS2 just so I could play the Guitar Hero games (got hooked over the weekend playing on my brother's system). Now, I am far from a fan of console games, much preferring the PC gaming experience, but seeing as there are hundreds of games available for the PS2 and many to be had at under $20 I figured that has to be a least a few decent titles that I would enjoy.

So, my question is, what are the "must have" titles for the PS2? Keep in mind that I really can't stand FPS on consoles but anything else I'm open to your suggestions. Thanks.
