Bilbo, I felt the same way but keep playing and learn some of the classes and exactly what they do. As you gain rank new weapons and gadgets open up to you. It did get better for me.
The biggest issue isn't the game so much as it's people just not coming together to play it the way its meant to. People like playing around with all the toys for the first several days of any new combined arms game like this. I think in another week or so you'll see more organized play going on.
Lastly, the Strogg flight packs can be used in a similar manner to the Tribes jetpack. Can't wait to see some of the mods that come out that take advantage of those.
