Earth No More Announced

3D Realms announces Earth No More, an upcoming cross-platform game that will be revealed in the July 2007 issue of Game Informer Magazine appearing in subscribers mailboxes today and on newsstands later this week. Earth No More is in the works at Recoil Games, founded by Samuli Syvahuoko formerly of Remedy, and the announcement says the game is due in 2009, oddly deferring to the magazine for this tidbit ("slated for 2009 according to the article"). The magazine piece will offer an interview and screenshots (as well as a new Duke Nukem Forever shot), but the story online is scant on details like genre, offering the following bits of tid:

"The development team is specifically moving away from what they call the 'lone hero,' while also avoiding a squad-based direction." "'We're going to design almost every weapon in the game to where it's going to have a sort of collaborative mode to it,' says Miller. One gun called the Linker works like a reverse proton pack from Ghostbusters."

"The good guys aren't the only ones who can team up, however. Enemies are being designed to complement each other's skills as well."

"The team is intricately analyzing how group dynamics work in movies like the Alien, The Thing, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and 28 Days Later, hoping to emulate that kind of tension in game form."

3D Realms concludes their story on this promising another big announcement (unrelated to DNF) soon.

There must be zero stress working for them though as deadlines are unheard of.

Or perhaps the stress is there, they just don't give a shit.

try to get DNF out the door, maybe instead of announcing another piece of vaporware.

Even if DNF - if and when it's ever released - is the best action game ever to date, there's no way they can justify the time and budget they've poured into it.

If DNF ends up being the best action game ever, I think that's justification enough for any amount of development time.

I'll give DNF some benefit of the doubt. The screenshots looked awesome when they came out. The second batch, like three years later, still look somewhat decent.

If they got rid of Dr. Proton and Buxom Whatever it could be good.
If they went the route of Duke being a bit over the hill, steroids having taken their toll, it could be damn awesome.

We have no way of knowing until we see something. We just know it's basically the Phantom of video games, and the odds are against it. It can still overcome them.

Like every game, I'll wait until I see some reviews to see exactly what the complaints are and exactly what the praises are and see if they're what I like/dislike.

You know, they should really give up on DNF. There is no way this game is going to shrug off its damned reputation at this point. Seriously. Unless it installs itself, jumps out of my DVD drive and proceeds to blow me like a $5000 hooker, there is no way in hell this game will succeed.

There's a word in the dictionary...hmmmm....ah, here it is: FUTILITY. It can be defined as knowing when to give up and proceed on to better things...

You have to be somewhat of an idiot to claim that the game was in development for 10 years because it sat in development hell. Again, look at how many Hollywood movies sit in development hell for decades before finally getting made. Does that mean they were in development that long? Of course not.

Yeah, only an idiot would spend a decade DevelopiNg a game. I dare you to Find such a situation! I mean, who would possibly do such the thing? LOL.

Look, ridiculous press releases full of nothing or tiny screen shots are going to get met with joke posts. That's all they deserve. What else can people really discuss when given these tiny scraps of information about a game that won't be released for years anyways?

And I guess a Prey sequel could be likely, but is that big news?
I guess if you're a publishing house putting it out.

The game felt so terribly generic, leading me to think it's a flaw of the Doom 3 engine. Both games felt like deja vu, something about the feel of the mechanics just felt generic and indistinguishable, although I suppose that isn't true if I felt it in both games.

Wait... Prey was on time? It was first announced in 1995! I'm not here to bash 3D Realms, but let's get the record straight, shall we?

There's a reason why I said "the actual Prey."

You're discussing the in-house Prey. That was announced in 1998 and cancelled not long after.
The actual Prey was 3DR published. It was not in-house. It was released soon after it was announced.

And, before anyone says it, the game was not in development for a decade. It was in development probably two years, then cancelled, then another two years when brought back to life.

You have to be somewhat of an idiot to claim that the game was in development for 10 years because it sat in development hell. Again, look at how many Hollywood movies sit in development hell for decades before finally getting made. Does that mean they were in development that long? Of course not. They were worked on, fell apart, rights got mixed up, things got forgotten, then they finally returned.

I'd say the other game is the Prey sequel which makes me happy. I think part of the reason Prey kinda died out so quickly (though it sold well) was the over-saturation of media and the huge demo. I thoroughly enjoyed the SP game but I had burned myself out on the multiplayer within a week or two. Plus all the coolest gadgets and some moments were revealed in that first E3 movie and subsequent vids leading up to release. very few surprises were left.

As far as this game, why fucking bother with a press release if you can't talk about the game properly?

exactly, if its published by 3drealms it is purely a stamp of a name it is up to the company making the game to release it on time.

As for DNF you know I was stupid enough to think it might get released but I really don't think it will heh.

edit: Actually Prey was on time the Prey that was released recently had nothing to do with the game being developed on the build engine around duke 3d atomic times, apart from being loosley based on the original concept.

This is a 3DR published title. The jokes about missed release dates aren't very funny. The actual Prey was on time. The Max Paynes were on time. I'm pretty certain Alan Wake has yet to miss any public deadlines.

We can make endless fun of their internal development, but their publishing record is fairly spotless. Making fun of it due to the internal record seems a bit... retarded.

Actually, that's not the image. There are two pics, one of Duke (which looks old), and a new one. In either case, you can't get an idea of how the game looks because its so small.

The DNF image is no doubt one of the images they used for their job openings page on the website. Really not worth even mentioning.
