I read that Bethesda makes a new engine from the ground up for every Elder Scrolls game. What a waste. Oblivion is great, why not just add and tweak things into it? Incorrect. Arena used it's own engine. Daggerfall, Battlespire and Redguard all used the XnGine. Morrowind and Oblivion both use the Gamebryo engine.

It's like if you walked into a Sporting Goods store, stole a mountain bike, and then came back the next day and complained because the gears didn't work. Terrible analogy. Firstly, you are talking about a defective product. I was talking about games that are just poorly designed. Secondly, as venomhed said, you are talking about a return, not a review. Thirdly, stealing a bike from a retail store is not the same as downloading a copy of a game. The original game is still available whereas the bike is now gone.
So, here's a better analogy:
You somehow make an exact copy of a bike, ride it for a few days and notice that the seat isn't very comfortable, the gears don't make much difference and the bike simply feels flimsy. Then you go online and post a review of the bike, pointing out these shortcomings.
How you obtained the bike is completely irrelevant. It is the exact same product that everyone else will use and having used it yourself, you are now qualified to form an opinion on it.

Slinky. Apples and oranges. We are talking about a review, not a return. In your example you could still review the bike, and say the gears broke day 1.
I guess it would be true that console games have become better, but most console games that I have seen are very simplistic, very easy to get into and walk away from, and none have I seen that require any real cerebral "talent". Console games remind me of American movies, 90% shit and 10% winners. PC games are more like French films, far more risky, innovative, about 50% shit, 25% good, 25% excellent. Those numbers, much like my Patrick Stewart making $100k a minute, are of course fabricated, but you get my drift.
Masa, I am not holier than thou, but at least I can admit I am a troll and can be a serious asshole. I am beyond the denial stage. Come join the rest of us grownups.

Interesting logic. So you can only criticize a crappy game if you spend money on it? That's news to me. Last time I checked, you only needed to play the game. How does that logic not work? It's like if you walked into a Sporting Goods store, stole a mountain bike, and then came back the next day and complained because the gears didn't work.

Oh dude, once you get the readings, the device they construct for you allows you into one of the scariest/funnest parts of the game. Cool, thanks for letting me know!! Might give it another go then.
It doesn't autosave anywhere near intelligently enough either. Forgetting to quicksave (or quicksaving and then immediately being ambushed) can be a real PITA.

You probably shouldn't be calling other people trolls either.

Also, just wanted to test something. Seems when I give you a hard time, your other personalities (read: trolls) come out as well.

I've already beat this game but I'm going to play it again because I think it's one of the best shooters I've played in years. Bugs aside, it's refreshing and fun. I'll taking a few bugs over the same ol' shit any day.
Ditto, though I beat it by cheating with a Godmode. Got too tough for my aged reflexes by the end. Too many bad guys. Prolly wont cheat this time and just spend more time outside the main meltdown area. Favourite part for me was the guy who sold me the Gauss rifle.
EDIT: oh and for the savegame whiners - the game isn't THAT long if you dont want it to be so just start over and get rid of most of the worst bugs, particularly the megaspawn rates. This comment was edited on May 12, 05:11. |

Yeah venomhed just what everyone needs the next set of Nintendo games revamped graphically from their NES counterparts to run on the Wii. And honestly I want my controls/controller to be rock solid like keyboard/mouse or Xbox controller. I think the movement features in the Wii and PS3 controllers are gimmicks. Yeah they would be great for bowling, or my sister who like to lean with the controller while she's playing, but other then that, no thank you. It can go on the shelf with, R.O.B., Virtual Boy, Gameboy Micro, and the Gameboy Printer/Camera. Right next to Sony's Mini Disc Player and PSP.
As for Console games, I think your wrong. It's to the point now where good unique games are comming out/or out, for the consoles that I wished were on the PC. Off the top of my head, games like Forza 1 and 2, Chrome Hounds (reinstalled mech 4 recently but it's really showing it's age), Dead Rising, Legend of Zelda Series.
While I'd like to think that the PC is the be all/end all of gaming it's not anymore. With things like Hard Drives, Multiplayer (Xbox Live),and being a Blue Ray/HD-DVD/DVD player, they have taken over the gaming market.
And as for generalizations being absurd venom, you really need to look at your second paragraph before ya start finger pointing.

Your generalizations are just absurd. I have, on many occasions, stated what I do and when. Yes I pirate, yes I buy games, no I am not in middle school. So drop it ok? It gets really old when you just keep saying the same old thing again and again yet refuse to read what is written.
Its like arguing with a black person. Their voice gets louder, the pitch higher, and their ears just seem to close up.
And to say that PC innovation or gaming has gone out a long time ago, then what are the consoles? Consoles, with the exception of sports games, are ALWAYS behind the PC. I would have to say this has always been the case to me, with the exception of the Wii. Now that is innovation, good for Nintendo to step back and find out what is FUN about gaming. The PS3 completely missed it, the PC falls squarely in the middle.

Why don't you start paying for your games and give them incentive to?
Yeah yeah, - "I'll pay for it if it's good..."
We are seriously getting to a point of diminishing returns on graphics. I'd argue that's occurred a long time ago. Particularly in the latest console platforms, the 360 and PS3 games that have come out all seem...rather generic, despite the excellent graphics.
And it's not simply due to "consolisation." Content in retail PC games has long suffered from a general lack of quality for literally years now.
And this is often the point when I'd say it was due to venomhed pirating software, or rather he is the embodiment of why the PC game platform largely sucks these days, but that's just obviously throwing an insult. While middle schoolers like him certainly don't help the cause any ["I don't have the money.." = fuckin' get a job], I just think all the innovation ran out of the PC platform.

Kinda like what Mad Doc did with the Armada 2 engine (left over art assets from Armada 2 INCLUDED!!), and have Beth publish it? And no I won't let it go, I'm gonna beat the horse till it's a mooshy little pile of goo.
As for Escorting the scientist, I had no problems doing this part, and with the exception of finding out I skipped a ton of the middle of the game and went straight for the Wish Maker, and Fox's info on Strelok skip (had to re-read it in the pda), and dieing cause I had permenant radiation sickness, the game overall wasn't too bad.
My 2 biggest complaints are that the graphics need to be optimized, as there are a few tree's that will make my game into slideshow mode. If they fixed this I could run it with with fully dynamic lights. The second is I wish they would slow down the player speed in Multiplayer. At least with the last patch trying to hit a running target was a joke. Will have to test it out with this one.

I hope this developer keeps using this engine, beefing it up and adding nice stuff. i really think the engine is fine for a long time.

We are seriously getting to a point of diminishing returns on graphics. Physics are the next big thing, sounds good to me, but can't engines like the Stalker and Oblivion engines just add this into their current engines?
The dev time for an engine these days takes years, years that could be spent on quality content.

Me too, I got bored when escorting the scientist to do readings (hardly a spoiler, and it's only a few hours in). Haven't booted it up since. The thing that annoyed me most about that one was the fact that he tells you before heading out that he's not very good at combat and so I go out first. But just after I get out and blast a zombie or two he comes running out and firing away like Rambo, then usually runs ahead and gets himself killed. I wish developers would stop making your escort objective alway act in a suicidally stupid fashion. Someone mentioned Morrowind earlier and that game had the same problem. You had escort prissy Princess Penelope to another location, she even tells you that she's no good at fighting, which is why they hire me. So when an ogre comes along, instead of hanging back and letting me do the fighting she goes running up and starts trying to fistfight it all the while getting in my line of fire.

* Fixed aspect ratio 16/9. Now the owners of the widescreen displays will have the benefit from greater viewing radius. Damn, I really don't want to start over, but I want my widescreen support.
I like the game, and I'm still playing on the v1.00000000. I have not had any crashes either. I had to take a break from the game (and all other games) to deal with other crap at the moment. I hope to get back to it soon.
I find the atmosphere in this game to be one of the best. I've never had a game get me so paranoid that I had to stop playing for a few minutes. What makes it worse is when I'm making my way through a dark creepy tunnel with only my flashlight, I'm hearing strange noises in the distance, and then my cat makes a noise behind me and scares the shit out of me.
