More on Hellgate Multiplayer

A Letter From Bill Roper at Hellgate Guru offers further justification from Flagship Studios about the premium multiplayer mode in Hellgate: London, explaining it is a way to pay in advance for expansions, rather than just a way to get "better" items:

We want as many players as possible to find and group with their friends online, regardless of when or where their characters were created. Gone are the days of worrying about making sure your new character will be able to play with your old friends. Everyone gets access to our secure multi-player game servers. Players can party and trade with other players and play through the entire adventure to save London from the grip of the demons.

And all for free.

Gamers also want choices, and we have so many great ideas for Hellgate: London, and the concept is so extendable, that we know we can keep adding to this game for a long time. We want to continue moving Hellgate: London forward in some really exciting directions, and to support ongoing development we’ve created a subscription service to give players access to new content as we go along. This commitment to our gamers was also a part of our plans for Hellgate: London from the very beginning.

In short, what subscribers are getting is new content – not simply “better” things. Another way of thinking of this would be that we’re delivering smaller expansions over time rather than having players wait a year or more before they finally get something new.

The developer says subscribers get 'new content' but not 'better stuff.' I dont buy that with the prior press release that says the subscriber will get a bigger inventory capacity etc. Developer is back-peddling.

Looking at the screenpics, I'm not sure if this game is offering depth or its just gonna be a consolified kill-everything-that-moves game.

I'm saying anyone who as posted more that 2687 on Blue's News needs an intervention, all those post when you could have been out, talking to people in person!!

The vast majority have come while either in the office or the classroom.

Going to college and only having 3 hours of class a week???

I didn't say "having," I said "going to." Poor judgment, perhaps, but I haven't suffered for it.

If you spend 100 hours a month, then yes, 10 dollars really isn't that much.

The problem is for people like me, who only have an hour or two a week to play. I have a choice - I either pay a drastically higher per-hour rate than people who play more regularly, or I have a limited gaming experience. This is the same reason I don't play MMORPGs, of course; The value for money curve means that casual gamers get screwed.

If you spend 100 hours of your life, every month, in a game, isn't it worth 10 bucks to make it better?

No, but it might be worth ten bucks to go visit a shrink and have someone objectively look at your rather failed attempt of a life. (btw, not saying your as in YOU, but as a general overall indicator. Ah whatever.)

I've probably put 100 hours into a single game in a month, and probably a bit more than that too. X2 comes to mind, and Oblivion probably. But that was one month. Someone who does it every month might want to take a break every now and then. I see some guy post about people that spend 400+ hours every month in a MUD. My God, those people need HELP! Where the fuck is Jerry Springer? Break their wall out of their house and get them some fucking SUNLIGHT.

Precisely. It's pathetic.

wtf???

I was probably putting in 100 hours a month to Counterstrike in my largest gaming burst. But I was a sophomore in college and went to maybe 3 hours of class a week. So when everyone else was in class I was asleep. When everyone else was around doing thing I was doing things with them. When everyone else was asleep I was playing CS.

Wtf again? so you have a way of doing it thats ok and enables you to judge others?

I pull in (give or take) average wage here in new zealand, may work 12 days a month, may work 5. Work can take me all over the country in a weekend, traveling with others, having fun, doing work (I enjoy my work) then during the 'normal' work week I play game, sometimes heaps, sometimes fuckall. We have 4 player civ4 games that take 20-30 hours to complete every week, sometimes more (2 or 3 games) plus other computer stuff, it what I chose to do. Your saying I'm in need of an intervention ?!?

I'm saying anyone who as posted more that 2687 on Blue's News needs an intervention, all those post when you could have been out, talking to people in person!!

Going to college and only having 3 hours of class a week??? That's what I call a waste, are you a waste?

No, I don't think so, I like much of what you post but lets all be real, if you wanta call anything pathetic, its life and those who belive theres is better than others. (like that place above Mexico and below Canada)

That's kinda sad. 100 hours a week is an average of 14 hours a day. How do you have time to do anything else?

Real world > little fantasy world with elfs and gnomes and Hell in London. If you're putting in 100 hours a month, and you're old enough to drive, you could use an intervention. People putting in 200 to 400? You're too far gone, it's only a matter of time until we find you laying dead on the floor of a Korean internet cafe, mummified because your avatar was still logged on, your credit card still being charged, and therefore you went so long without being missed.

Many, many, many people spend 100+ hours a week in WoW and pretty much every other MMO. Even the 2d MMO I run, Ashen Empires, we have hundreds of hardcore players who log 400+ hours a month.

Ok Beamer,

Your just being an ass.

You are making assumptions about something you don't know. I won't even justify your questions with an answer.

If I'm not mistaken,Blizzard uses AT&T for hosting here in the U.S. (and possibly elsewhere, not sure).

Also true, but probably not outside the US since AT&T is not a large presence in other countries.

I guess it all depends on what they'd be doing instead. Statistics show kids watch more than 3 hours of TV a day. You could be playing sports 3 hours a day, but you better be careful not to wear out your body by age 30. Same with drinking if you spend 3 hours a day in a bar. It's the usual, "everything in moderation" and doing what you believe is fun without causing harm.

To be fair there are plenty of students who might be on summer vacation or are just skipping lectures who basically have 16 free hours a day. Even if you're a k-12 student, figure you get home around 3pm, playing for 3 hours isn't a big deal really, that's less than half your free time if you don't spend too much time on homework.

Once you get a fulltime job though...

It has nothing to do with my feelings about Hellgate.

People playing 100 hours of video games a month are missing out on pretty much everything else in life.

Do you have any kind of social interaction that doesn't involve a headset?

Hey Beamer, I know your upset about the Hellgate thing, I am too. But I think it's pretty rude to insist that anyone playing the same game (or maybe different games) for longer than 3 hours and 20 minutes nevery day "needs an intervention" is pretty rude.
