Sunday Q&As

  • Lord of the Rings Online
The Lord of the Rings Online Q&A on WarCry discuses the launch of the MMORPG with Turbine's Jeffrey Steefel in part nine (the fightin' ninth!) of their 434-part series Ask Turbine. In the article-format Q&A, Steefel seems reasonably satisfied with the game's launch, scoring it a nine out of 10.
  • RealNetworks
Picking casual gaming's top model on The Hollywood Reporter is an interview with Erik Goossens of RealNetworks about the casual gaming market: "Today most of the revenue comes from customers paying for games, either one at a time or on a subscription basis. But I believe the in-game ad model will be a big driver of revenue going forward. Another model is taking place in China, where people don't generally own their own computers. So they go to cafes and play games there, which means that downloading a game to own doesn't make a lot of sense. Instead, the micro-transaction model has become popular in casual games. I believe that's an area where our industry is going to figure out how to put that in front of the existing U.S. audience over the next two or three years and really take it to the next level. I refer to that as the 'Casual Games 2.0' strategy. "

Though personally I think it just above average (maybe 7/10) I'm sure it'll be a hit.

i played LOTRO in openbeta and i really enjoyed it but overall swords and elves dont really interest me so hopefully tabula rasa will entertain me. at least until hellgate:london takes over my life

that casual games strategy is a bit stupid tho. you cant really compare the gaming market and gamers of china to western gamers habits can you?

Not sure how many peeps a server can hold but tonight ours (Vilya or whatever it's called) was pushing it toward over-load in Bree. Not since Beta 2 have I seen it lag that badly.

So my guess is that there are quite a few who bought the game and were hitting it hard this afternoon and evening.

I'm enjoying the game for what it is... a great MMORPG that is not WoW.

I'm seeing new things everyday (I wasn't playing 24/7 during Beta) and enjoying the exploration just as much as the quests. The game looks amazing and plays well most of the time. I look forward to the first of many free add-ons next month.

I agree this is Turbine's best though I liked AC (the original) a lot also.

Well I wanted to play it, but Atari (australian distributor) has failed horribly at releasing it in AUS, I get it finally on this coming tues(due to a long weekend) and the delay of over a week as it was from the 27th april till now is just a joke.

If it was to stop server choking then thats even more retarded.

They had 11 servers to start open beta and two weeks after launch they still have 11 servers. I would have to say Turbine has to be a bit disapointed on the turn out.

Me thinks Blue is a Steven Colbert fan.

But yea, Turbine has been milking the Lord of the Rings banner for all it's worth, with updates, articles, screenshots, on nearly a daily basis, starting about 3 months before the game came out. It is their best MMOG since.. well it's the best they ever made. Though personally I think it just above average (maybe 7/10) I'm sure it'll be a hit.
