I doubt whether it will appeal to hardcore Fallout fans at all, especially when they are typified by people who are up in arms when the developer uses the wrong shade of brown for a particular type of dirt. I actually liked Quake 2.

I'm just saying that when it comes to Fallout 3, I fully expect Bethseda to completely and utterly fuck it up and drive it into the ground, while quite possibly making all the console players learn to appreciate and love a new type of game. They've already said that Fallout 3 won't appeal to some people. I doubt whether it will appeal to hardcore Fallout fans at all, especially when they are typified by people who are up in arms when the developer uses the wrong shade of brown for a particular type of dirt.

The most telling information will be if Fallout 3 will come out for consoles. With the inherent limitation of a handful of buttons on a console's controllor and lacking a keyboard and mouse, then will have a sense of what Fallout 3 cannot be given those technical limitations.
BioShock is a good example where we actually have info about that game, it is going to consoles, and its looking like it will be a consolified shooter with snazzy moody visuals. Might be fun but Chrysis will be the better shooter based upon the PC version of Far Cry.

Not low standards. Low expectations.
There's a distinct difference. I save my high expectations for things more likely to hit them. Crysis? Check. The next Smash Brothers? Check. Okay, fine Beamer or Beaner. I know one of you are an old time gamer, not that that means anything.
I liked FarCry and fully expect Crysis to be good as well as QuakeWars. I hope so, but I won't get my poop in a loop if they fall below my 'standards'.
I'm just saying that when it comes to Fallout 3, I fully expect Bethseda to completely and utterly fuck it up and drive it into the ground, while quite possibly making all the console players learn to appreciate and love a new type of game. That doesn't help my entertainment experience but I suppose it'll make someone some money and perhaps bring the unwashed masses into the nineties.

Most RPGers know this so I'm just speaking to a brick wall or the choir... Actually, it's more like whining. About a game you know nothing about. Shut your piehole until at least the teaser trailer is released, at which point you can then complain about how the perspective is totally wrong and the lightning effects don't match the ones in the previous games and how the sound effects aren't post-apocalyptic-y enough.

Other than that I'm looking to be entertained, not marry a game. I'll buy it for $20, play it for a week and a half, forget about it later. Only a few break that. Civilization 1 & 4, Jagged Alliance, X-COM, I can keep replaying these. They're masterpieces.
Other games just need to be good to great.

I don't know anything about Fallout 3
I think it's pretty clear that I was implying just that. Yes, I know that's what you meant. What I was implying is that some of us that have been playing RPG's for many years have watched the quality of these games steadily decline before our very eyes.
You seem to be okay with that as you 't admittedly have low standards, which is fine, I'm the same way with beer. But when it comes to programming, effort, modern technology and huge development and publishing houses, I tend to expect a higher standard after a few years.
Fallout is an excellent example of an IP that will be destroyed. Look at Oblivion. Look at what the hype machine promised and the pathetic game they delivered.
Look at Baldurs Gate, then Icewinddale then NWN, then KoTR. Look at Freespace then what? Look at Gothic 1 and 2, then what? Look at Daggerfall, Morrowind and Oblivion.
I detect a pattern of game quality going downhill. You freely accept that. Not a big deal. Unfortunately when people like you accept that and pay for it those of us that expect more get less.
As I've said before, it's just a symptom of our undecucated society that doesn't have the brains to expect more or just never experienced it in the first place.
Perhaps F3 will be a fun game in its own right, for current XBox users expectations, but I can't see it being a good RPG expecially since it's being made by Beth. Most RPGers know this so I'm just speaking to a brick wall or the choir...

The prospect of an Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion-style RPG in a Road Warrior-like world has sparked more than a little interest in Fallout 3. Many are looking forward to Fallout 3 being "Oblivion with Mutants," although that has not been confirmed by Bethesda, who has only said the game will run on the same GameBryo engine as Elder Scrolls IV. I think that is pretty suggestive about where Bethesda is taking it.

way, way too much going on in that soundtrack.. sounds like a Conan movie, not Fallout
should be much more minimal, bleak.. disturbing and "too quiet"
hard to imagine bethesda not missing the mark on this game.. but i suppose they might be able to pull it off.. doubt it tho, fallout had the best dialog system of any RPG to date.. and i dont see them giving up the overrated "everything has a voice over!!" bullshit for the much more robust options available to strictly text system
which makes me wonder why no one has tried to implement a text-to-speech engine yet.. the ATT labs one is damn convincing
and thats just one tiny facet of Fallout.. would they even have the brains and foresight to implement the kind of non-linearity and consequence-heavy type gameplay it was known for? not to mention the mood and humor?
not hopeful on this one

Deus Ex, Thief, System Shock... all shooters.
Yes the they were shooter esque, but they also had character development which they ditched for Bioshock. Ovbiously so they could make a better "shooter" and not a better RPG.

You know nothing about Fallout, only the dev, a dev that has at least a decent track record, certainly not a bad one. Actually I know all about Fallout as well as Fallout 2. I don't know anything about Fallout 3, but if the current trend of dumbed down, streamlined 'RPGs' is any indication of the current direction of that genre, then my expectations will undoubtably not be reached.
It might be an alright game, I'm just not getting my hopes up for it living up to what I played in the past. Perhaps your standards are low and you don't expect games to live up to standards that have already been established.
I see nothing wrong with games raising the bar and exceeding my expectations in the year 2007, but you seem content to settle for less. And that's fine, it doesn't really matter to me.

I have no hope for either Fallout or Bioshock yet I'm hoping I'm wrong. Maybe Enemy Territory will be fun but I still haven't upgraded my computer yet, I don't see the point.
You know nothing about Fallout, only the dev, a dev that has at least a decent track record, certainly not a bad one.
As for BioShock, everything about it looks fantastic, with the exception of it being called a shooter, which is really overreacting by fans. Deus Ex, Thief, System Shock... all shooters.
The problem really seems to be your expectations, which I'd imagine no game can live up to.
Which is also why Fallout 3 would be better as Fallout: Adventures. Because it lessens the expectations. People don't expect it to be what Fallout 1 and 2 where, just remind them of Fallout 1 and 2.
