Tabula Rasa Closed Testing

NCsoft announces that closed beta testing is underway for Tabula Rasa, Richard Garriott’s MMORPG:

Austin, Texas, May 2, 2007—NCsoft® today announced that closed beta testing is beginning for the company’s highly anticipated online computer game, Richard Garriott’s Tabula Rasa™. The start of closed beta marks the game’s final development stages as Tabula Rasa approaches an anticipated launch this fall in North America and Europe.

Richard Garriott’s Tabula Rasa is a massively multiplayer online (MMO) role playing PC game that places players in an epic sci-fi story where they will be challenged by dynamic and fast-paced adventures on alien worlds.

Garriott’s signature creative vision introduces several fresh features to the MMO genre such as a character cloning system, role-playing on the battlefield and a mystical “Logos” language and powers system. They are the types of touches that players have come to expect over the years from a Richard Garriott game.

“This is an exciting time for the Tabula Rasa team,” says Garriott, executive producer at NCsoft and the Austin, Texas-based Destination Games™ development team. “With closed beta testing now in progress, we’re excited to hear more what our players think. With fast-action and tactical combat in an RPG setting, a deep and interesting fictional universe, and many feature innovations, we think we’ve created a game that represents the next generation of MMO games and will revolutionize the way people play online games.”

Garriott is best known for creating the best-selling Ultima® computer game series, including the first commercially successful MMO game, Ultima Online. In 2006, he was presented with two industry honors for his work in the games industry. That year Garriott was inducted into the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame and later was presented the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Game Developers Choice Awards.

More details on Richard Garriott’s Tabula Rasa and closed beta testing for the game can be found at http://www.PlayTR.com. More information on NCsoft can be found at http://www.PlayNC.com.

True. However before they did open beta there was a closed beta. Closed beta was NDA.

who cares about the NDA seriously

If we had more people breaking it, we would get less garbage than Vanguard. I like the way Lord of the Rings Online did it. Open beta to everyone, you dont like it, dont buy it

If your one of those types who goes into beta, see's an unfinished game and figure the game sucks and will suck at release to, then you don't belong in beta testing.

No, I'm one of those silly types of Software *Developers* who thinks a program or game had better have a good "hook" when it goes to beta. Whether or not is good is in the eye of the beholder I suppose.

Then do the beta people a favor, DrEvil: QUIT. Walk away and let those that are there to TEST the game instead of getting cheap (as in, free) gameplay to become oh-so-uber at a game in beta do their job.

I'm not breaking the NDA. I'm speaking in very generic terms without giving any specifics. I have thoroughly read the legal agreement and see absolutely nothing that precludes me from speaking in generic ways that do not disclose anything regarding their intellectual property specifics. Everything I've mentioned can be gathered from public screenshots, and impressions articles posted by reviewers.

DrEvil: Perhaps you need to be giving suggestions to the development team rather than breaking this over Blues .... and breaking the NDA. Otherwise, what the hell are you doing beta testing ... apart from playing the game for free.

it strikes me as ironic that people are going to complain about bad dated graphics when theres the population of a small country playing WoW.

The graphics for TR look fine if the movies and screenshots are accurate. All the major MMOG that attempt to do high end visuals end up with a stuttering mess. For instance EQ2 is still barely playable at maxed settings almost 2 years later.
I concur

I'm really looking forward to this game...I can't get into current mmo games and this one seems to fix everything I hate in current mmos

For an MMO, adequate is good enough anyway. It does look like they borrowed some people from CoH/CoV, the texturing and lighting look similar. Given that this is primarily a PvE game, the AI better be the best in the business. Otherwise the game will last about as long as Vanguard.

The graphics looked pretty good to me. GPM has new screenshots and artwork: http://www.gameplaymonthly.com/screens/tabularasa.php

I don't know why people keep expecting top-of-the-line graphics in MMOs. MMOs by nature will always be a little behind because of how they're designed.

While the graphics are obviously dated, due to the 2 year delay I imagine. The game just got out of Alpha. There's a lot of work to do yet and it's not even due out till the end of the year is it? That is a whole lot of time for some serious work to get done.

Which MMORPG has good AI?

I wouldn't say any of them have really good AI. Of them, City of Heroes is probably the best. In that mobs work together, buff, heal, send groups after you at a time. It's not great AI, but it's probably easily the best. Most MMOGs (and most games over-all) just have AI enough that mobs run strait at you and attack as soon as they see you. In this respect AI has barely improved since Wolfestein.

Age of Conan is supposed to have pretty good AI. AI that adapts to your fighting style or finds the hole in your defenses and vice versa. Mobs that switch up their attack style to keep you off balance. I guess you cant know for sure until you've played it lol. They are also implementing a 'needs' based AI, ala Oblivion, only less detailed apparently.

You can find info on the AI and other cool features of this highly anticipated MMOG at bymitra.com

Trust me. It sucks BAD. It's like a graphically enhanced version of Quake 2 with the AI of Extreme Paintball.

I take it you've played the game. You in the beta or something? If your one of those types who goes into beta, see's an unfinished game and figure the game sucks and will suck at release to, then you don't belong in beta testing.

It looks interesting to me. UO was amazing, but who's to say if RG can pull out another MMOG success. It's not my most anticipated MMOG (that'd be Age of Conan,) but if I get into beta I'll test the shite out of it none the less.
