I hope this doesn't turn into "the boy who cried wolf".
In 2 days, there have been NUMEROUS 'lock downs' across the nation. Even one in Rapid City South Dakota - and this is the 2nd in Minnesota in 2 days.

Or it could get as bad as this:

was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of interfering with staff, faculty or students of an education institution

ummm, yeah, you need probable cause for an arrest.

This is going to get worse before it gets better.

In the 300 dollar range the only card worth looking at is the 8800GTS, once you go past midrange Nvidia is the only one in the current high end market. ATI is supposedly releasing something or other within the next couple of months...maybe.

Nor have I...

Same here. And he's labeled a "liberal" as well, which seems kind of strange to be calling a sportscaster, but then I don't really watch Sportscenter either...

Well I stick to products I've used before and I know will work at the end of the day. As for Case/PSU I'm not worried about it but I basically need those 3 things for a 'base' and fill in the gaps later.

Basically my idea is this, get the CPU/MB/RAM now (especially with AMD going Crazy Al with prices), and then get a PCI card (still chugging along with my 6800 GT OC AGP), and just use my Audigy 2 sound card until Vista/Micrsoft and Creative decide wtf they are gonna do sound wise. And I have a SATA drive and plan on getting a SATA DVD drive here shortly as mine is dieing a slow death. So not worried about that part.
So once I get a base items and going to PCI it should be alot cheaper to do upgrades every 2 years or so without breaking the bank.

As long as I can consistantly get 30 to 50fps I'm a happy bitch. Video wise am looking at the 300 dollar range (same as my agp card when it was released).

in games like FEAR with certian settings the 8800 GTS with 320 mem gets almost double the FPS then the 8600 GTS with 256mb

With the 8800 GTS I can run FEAR with everything turned up all the way, smooth as glass. To me, it fits a great price point for $$/performance.

Again I agree with Cabezone. He da man. Hell, in games like FEAR with certian settings the 8800 GTS with 320 mem gets almost double the FPS then the 8600 GTS with 256mb.

Of course, the gtx would be better

nin:

I personally would go with a 8800 GTS 320 for 80 bucks more, maybe less if you don't mind rebates.

If thats too expensive, I'd go with the x1950 pro. It's faster overall and cheaper but doesn't support DX10. However, I don't think that the 8600 GTS is really fast enough to take advantage of DX10 enhancements anyway.

I ran into this problem with my last rebuild. I scored a couple of cheap 200 gig IDE drives, and then couldn't use them because the high-end mobo I wanted only had the 1 IDE connection (and that, of course, needed to be used by a CDROM burner and DVD drive).

I guess the mobo makers expect everyone to go to SATA drives ...
You can buy adapters to use older IDE drives on SATA.

Anyone familiar with B Central data storage?

Looking for a commercial based storage/file sharing solution for a global organization.

Something similar to Microsoft Sharepoint on a global/commercial level.

ie: WamNET that is now Savvis. etc...

Thanks.

So if I was looking for an affordable card w/ decent gaming performance, would a GeForce 8600 GTS fit the bill?

I can't keep up w/ nvidia's 3 million model numbers is the reason I ask...

Thank you!

Intel is also planning large cuts - you want AMD, I like Intel.
You like car X I like car Y.

Whatever floats your boat - now if RAM would just correct itself.

Hi,
It seems like the price cuts are just beginning, I'd wait another 3 months (or less) for Barcelona to get out, core2duo to get a price cut -> which will cause the current AM2 AMDs to be reduced even further,

shul

The man is revered as a god by liberals. Me, I've never been able to listen to more than 5 minutes of the guy. Seriously, everyone raves about what a genius the man is and I always think I'm missing out on something. He just drones on and on, using huge words and florid, bloated similes chocked full of meaningful symbolism. I can't ever figure out what the hell he's even trying to say. It's like I'm listening to somebody completely different than what everyone else is listening to.
