I figured there might at least be some sort of a correlation(sp?)? I gathered that simply decreasing smoking would not necessarily directly increase the number of customers, as other factors are involved. But I didn't think that smoking, or lack thereof, could/would/should be a factor among several.

Damn it. Are you people tards?

It does not matter if banning/not banning smoking has an affect on the amount of business. You as a business owner should be allowed to choose to allow something legal to take place in your establishment, even if it lowers the profits of your business.

For those people that want it banned, trying to use more profit to justify it is stupid. Is is not your place to tell other business that they can not choose to make less money. They should be allowed to choose to make less in order to do something different; otherwise everybody would be Walmart.

This is a simple concept here. Everybody is more then welcome to disagree....but at least get the damn concept first before you disagree/agree.

(Yes, I'm still up. Can't sleep )

Trying to use the more business (see the link Dan posted) to justify the ban, as far as I am concerned, has absolutely no relevance to the specific topic of allowing/disallowing.

It's hardly irrelevant, however, to say it affects business (as for what you said, it should be up to the owner).

I am not saying it is irrelevant to if it affects business. It clearly would. I am saying that even if it does affect business, it is irrelevant to a point of legally allowing/disallowing smoking in bars/restaurants from a governmental, legal standpoint. Trying to use the more business (see the link Dan posted) to justify the ban, as far as I am concerned, has absolutely no relevance to the specific topic of allowing/disallowing.

I did not contradict myself....you are just a tard!

I think that if bars/restaurants are getting more/less business due to allowing/disallowing smoking is irrelevant. Smoking is not illegal. Therefore, I think it should be up to the business owners if they want to allow/disallow smoking. They should be responsible to find out that if the majority of their patrons would prefer nonsmoking over smoking.

Eh, except for where you contradict yourself in your first sentence, I completely agree with you in that the decision should be left up to the establishment owner. It's hardly irrelevant, however, to say it affects business (as for what you said, it should be up to the owner).

Therefore, I think it should be up to the business owners if they want to allow/disallow smoking. They should be responsible to find out that if the majority of their patrons would prefer nonsmoking over smoking. You can not cater to everybody, as a business owner you can either chose to cater to the largest group in your area, or do what you wish so you enjoy your business and other like minded people enjoy it as well. But, either way it is your choice as a business owner and you should be aware of the economical consequences, and you must chose which is more important to you.

Like wise, as a consumer, if you do not like the smell of smoke or are afraid of being around smoke for health reasons, choose to take your business elsewhere. That is the great thing about this country. There are always numerous other options, you chose, stop trying to force other people to what you want. We are not talking about the public library or the post office or court house here.

Then again, I recall someone saying that 50% of all statistics are 90% fabricated... or something to that extent.

And 81.347% of statistics are abused to give false conclusions, on purpose to support agenda.

And on that note, I highly highly recommend everybody check out this book:
http://www.amazon.com/How-Lie-Statistics-Darrell-Huff/dp/0393310728/
While it is old, it is still a great example. You can buy it for cheap, or check out your local library.

Seriously, I implore everybody to read that, and then read even a simple yet good statistics book like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Cartoon-Guide-Statistics-Larry-Gonick/dp/0062731025/

You can literally read both books in a days time with no problem.

Then when you see/hear the numbers reported in news, political things, and even advertisement for medicine and such, read the fine print real quick, look at the method, and apply this little bit of information.

It is perfectly legal, and legitimate math/statistics wise to say in many cases that something is 99% effective, even when in the real world it only works for 1 out of every 100. And it is done ALL the time. And it pisses me off.

I implore all of you to either buy those two books or check them out at your local library. They are both quick, easy and enjoyable reads that will open your eyes to so much.

Anywho, was just curious as to what everyone thought of this. Am I right/wrong/somewhere in the middle? Should I be taken out and shot, or what?

I can't comment on the business end of it because I don't have any solid data to go by. Living is Massachusetts I can say that it seems to me that business increased in bars as they enacted the ban and I personally started going to places I would have avoided before. That's purely subjective though, I have no idea if local bars have suffered for it. Of course, I also live in the 'Five-college' area so bars around here never have trouble finding a crowd.

Personally I hate the smell of cigarette smoke. Kinda strange since I like the occasional cigar, but.....*shrug*

Yeah, that's why I find it comical when people cite unions as some great evil verus exuctive thievery.

On a different political matter...

A friend of mine and I were chatting on the phone earlier, when he mentioned about the book "Thank You For Not Smoking", upon which the movie is based, stating that the author is the best he'd ever read concerning use of satire of a socio-political arena (not his words, but my own).

His stance is that of getting the state (in this case MA) to allow all bars to restore a smoking environment within their premisis, if the bars so choose.

Previously, in an attempt to get the ball rolling, the state mandated that bars comply with a regulation requiring appropriate ventilation systems to exhaust the smoke from establishments, which may have cost upwards of $5,000. Soon afterward (a year, I guess?), the state then declared compliance with outright banning of smoking in those "public" establishments, with some weird reg saying that 90% of all sales must come from tobacco sales to meet a rule allowing indoor smoking (I may have misheard this - someone feel free to correct me). This is what I gathered from his end. To which, I asked, where in any law does it say that an establishment must be protected from bankruptcy or failure otherwise? (He even mentioned during the convo that the main character/tobacco-corp person presented in the aforementioned novel/movie was a "good guy". As in, "not a bad guy", not a "hero".)

For those out-of-staters, smoking in these establishments - restaurants, bars, etc. - had been banned, for example, in Boston in 2003. Other towns and cities may have enacted bans in other months/years around then.

Personally, I don't smoke. I've seen what can happen to those that do (certain family members), and the surrounding physical effects that linger are not pleasant. I would never wish to start due to an already-present lung condition. Of course, this would end up only as anecdotal.

That being said, I'm a bit conflicted. On one hand, I don't think I have a right to tell others how they should live their lives; on the other hand, I think public health at large trumps any individual concern, especially (oddly?) with respect to things that can be smoked - since the smoke can travel well and PERMEATES when it settles in...

.....e.g. my current vehicle - my mother's previous car. Yuck. Had to air the windows out through the windows for over a week - and this was with Fabreeze! Same with my current bed - given by friend's family, who smoke HEAVILY...

The smell is disgusting...

Ahem.

I've read reports contrary to my friend's statements that even small businesses are losing out - they all seemingly got increased business six months into the ban:

http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2005/04/04/restaurants_bars_gain_business_under_smoke_ban/

Then again, I recall someone saying that 50% of all statistics are 90% fabricated... or something to that extent.

Anywho, was just curious as to what everyone thought of this. Am I right/wrong/somewhere in the middle? Should I be taken out and shot, or what?

kxmode, that is correct. (I hope you were joking.)

(In case you weren't joking, read below.)

Those lines I wrote are the opening lines to the theme song (and its chorus) to the Disney-esque (but not Disney) movie musical of the same name.

Unless you have an absolute distaste of musicals, which I can understand - everyone has different tastes - I would recommend you see it. It's actually an enjoybale flick, with Dick Van Dyke starring as a bumbling inventor/professor.

'Course, the real star of the show is the car itself. It's a beauty.

EDIT: Had to correct myself, as the movie is NOT a Disney movie....
