As TB said initially, this doesn't come out of the blue. In fact, future US versions of the PS3 will also come without those chips. That was the plan all along.
Even though I don't have citations now, I believe he's right about using the emulation to play the classic PS games you can download. Doesn't matter to me if anyone else thinks that's BS, so don't expect me to argue about it.
But I disagree that this will provide more options to EU people: the US versions will eventually switch over to software emulation as well. Again, that was planned.
They *could* then implement higher output resolutions, advanced filtering, and so on, but *that* would all be speculation.
