Damn Yifes, one marketing department conspiracy after another, eh? Those damn marketing people are really trying to upset you, aren't they? But they can't fool you! No sir!
"UFO: Aftermath is a 2003 singleplayer game heavily influenced by the X-COM series. During its development, the developers solicited comments from the X-COM fan community. But they emphasized that their game, though similar, is not an X-COM game."
(From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X-Com)
Then again, maybe you're right...

None of them are sequels |

None of the new UFO games are sequels. It really upsets me that all these companies are name raping the old UFO/X-COM series. I remember when UFO:Aftermath first came out and the marketing department used a lot of clever language to suggest that the game was a sequel to those classics, resulting in a lot of confusion by reviewers and consumers alike.
Well, I wouldn't be that upset if the game was any good.
Too bad UFO can't be copywrited... Now lets see how ALTAR feels when another game (UFO:Extraterrestrials) competes for the UFO name.

You forgot to mention how irritating the voices were in Aftermath. Every time a squad member finished their action they said the same thing. Again and again and again.
I still have Aftershock to play but I think the tutorial has turned me off it.

The first game, in a nutshell:
"Hey you, stop moving. Stop moving. Dammit, I said stop... oh great, now you're dead. Idiot."
"Ok, you three walk over there and start blasting that alien... go! Ok, two of you are there, start shooting! No, don't wait for fat and slow to get there before you start shooting, the alien is... great, now you're both dead because you waited for fatty before you began your next action... why wasn't this turn based again?"

The first one was unplayable.
I see no reason to believe the next two have been any better.

UFO: Aftermath UFO: Aftershock UFO: Afterlight
To be honest, I'm not too happy with the latest game, but it is pretty cool to be able to cut Martians in half with buzzsaws.

at this point we're unclear on what series that is They're trying to claim it's part of the X-Com series, which is called UFO in europe for some reason.
I got burned with the last game (Aftershock) but apparently this one is better from what I hear. I still don't know about it though...
