When the Gathering of Developers (G.O.D.) was announced, it was going to be this completely "different" publisher, where IPs stayed in the hands of the developers, that took only a marginal cut of the pie, devs kept complete creative freedom, it was going to revolutionize the industry, all other publishers were either going to have to follow their model or go out of business, blablablablabla.
About fifteen months later, they switched to becoming a normal publisher (inasmuch as they weren't one from the start), and about twelve months after that they were dead and buried.
So now Mike Wilson, the same guy that was one of the braintrusts behind G.O.D. forms Gamecock, with the EXACT SAME IDEAS that G.O.D. was built on. Devs keep IP, we stay small, low margin of profit, creative freedom, blablabla.
Sound familiar? Hello Mike, it didn't work the first time. Somehow I doubt it's going to work any better the second time. However, maybe you can go into this great new thing, ssshhh, don't let anyone hear, it's called "episodic gaming", and it's absolutely fucking fantastic. Give that a try.
Color me unimpressed. I put the over/under on them folding like a 3-9 unsuited at about 15 months.

Maybe they're doing something different this time and learning from the mistakes of the past? I don't know, I think we should just wait and see what they do before writing it off as G.O.D. Redux...

Gamecock does appear to be publishing some games with novel settings/characters. Insecticide, Mushroom Men, etc are all rather unique. As for gameplay, well, that has yet to be seen.

Now we just have to wait and see if they release any good games. "I also learned that big business isn’t the right way to go if you’re looking for innovation." At least they've got the right philosophy.

This has been talked about here a bit... Gamecock is sort of a joke name. They are a new kind of publisher that wants to not draw attention to themselves in the way publishers like EA do. They want the comsumers to see the developers name, and gamecock is so ridiculous no one would ever put that in bold lettering on the box. Kind of a symbolic name.
With that said, they are drawing a lot of attention to themselves, but in a good way I think. Now we just have to wait and see if they release any good games.

Who on earth names a studio Gamecock? Mike Wilson. Apparently you don't realize that this is the same guy who used to have pole dancers at E3.

I think they maybe British! They should have gone with CockGames.
Trust me, most of the names I have been called you can't translate in any language...they're not even real words as much as a succesion of violent images. |
